like to make money off of OF, but the most important thing to them is to put on a show of making it as a sex worker. Most people on OF don't make anywhere close to enough to live on, the real importance of OF to most of the trans community is as a LARP venue where they can get their rocks off by pretending to be a hooker.

Gender dysphoria does exist, but I'm not convinced that it's a disease in and of itself so much as a symptom or a syndrome of
various mental illnesses (look up delusional pseudotranssexuality). In a way, the treatment of gender dysphoria as it's own disease opened the door to the completely ludicrous theory of gender identity, because if delusions about your sex were completely removed from any other delusions then wouldn't it stand to reason that your idea of your sex was somehow removed from the rest of your mental state? And wouldn't that imply some part of your brain is dedicated to maintaining your gender? And that became the idea of gender identity.
But once you accept the idea of gender identity you then have to accept the idea of innate gender. But that's clearly not a very progressive idea and you need to make this clearly regressive and sexist idea of gender identity work within a progressive framework (you know, since this whole exercise is due to progressives wanting to be compassionate to people with gender dysphoria). Tying gender identity to any sort of observable characteristics (mental or social) would be restrictive, so in order to avoid gender identity just becoming scientific sexism (or at least avoid it being to obvious) they decided that gender identity wouldn't be a box that you were put in but a box you chose for yourself, leading to the idea of self-identification. That's how we got to today, where gender identity is simultaneously so important that we need to prioritize it in policy making, but completely unobservable and untestable so we just need to take people's word.
tl;dr: progressives wanted to be kind to gender dysphorics and treat it as completely removed from the various mental illnesses that cause it, this led to the concept of gender identity as its own distinct thing in the human psyche. In order to distinguish gender identity from old-fashioned scientific sexism the concept of self-identification was created. All of this gender nonsense comes from the attempt to be compassionate towards people with gender dysphoria and we really should treat it as a symptom of other diseases.
