Boring episode, but it's still frustrating because they took this beautiful friendship and have now turned it into a manipulative toxic relationship just because Satoko was upset she had to study to stay in school and Rika was making new friends.

Rika is absolutely right, and yet Satoko says she's being selfish. Remember, Satoko agreed to study alongside Rika and follow her to the school of her choice. She had the right to say "no". She had the right to air out her grievances and talk to Rika about it. But she didn't. She chose to blindly follow Rika because of her own insecurities, and had to suffer the consequences for it.

"But it's not my fault. It's Rika's fault for wanting to leave Hinamizawa."

Stupid bitch. This isn't the Satoko I know and love. Even if it's the pre-Massacre Satoko who hadn't yet opened up her feelings to Rika and asked her help as I've seen some folks make the argument over, Rika should've recognized this in her 100-year-old wisdom, and asked Satoko about her true feelings. Satoko should've just stood up for herself and made her own decisions if she truly had an issue with this.

Here's the thing: Satoko's not wrong. She's technically a pariah in the village. But as Featherine said:

Satoko, after having witnessed all of the fragments Rika had to go through in her attempt to escape the loop and live a happy life with her friends, is becoming no worse than the people of the village who shunned her for her parents' transgression.

This is Satoko's moral event horizon. This is before she guts open Rika, by the way. She cannot come back from this, and she has no one to blame but herself. Except she can't blame others.

I seriously do not blame the committee member who leaked this arc to the Chinese and let them loose. It's probably much worse story-wise in the up-coming episodes to get the full story behind those screenshots, but I bet it started with this, with Satoko playing the victim (which isn't an incorrect fact) which would lead to the deaths of her friends and fellow villagers all because she didn't take Rika's hand when she had extended it to join her in the tea club, and to help her study.

Stupid cunt.

I feel like I'm taking goddamn crazy pills.
Edit: You know what would have been a better motive for Satoko? Have her try to wake Satoshi from his coma no matter what (or try to keep him from falling into L5 Hinamizawa Syndrome). Eventually she starts to go nuts from grief (maybe she has surmounted trauma from remembering her fates in Rika's loops or something too) and decides "I have to have someone by my side" which would turn out to be Rika since they've lived together ever since their parents died. Then Rika blows her off to go to St. Lucia's, Satoko tries to get in but fails, sucks it up and lets Rika go anyway, then slowly goes mad with jealousy over her "mistake" of letting Rika leave.

Even my fanon motivation is flimsy but at least it's more in fucking character than whatever shit this is right now.

Oh just randomly decided to check out the manga to see where in Nekodamashi-hen it was at, and it doesn't pull a stupid smash-cut to Akasaka murdering Rika. It's a gradual progression to that last page of "Psych, he's nuts!" reveal.

Just twist in the knife some more that the anime is fucking atrocious.
 
I can't believe they're actually finding new ways to make Satoko as detestable as possible, but here she seems to be planning to use her newly reformed uncle (whose "character arc" of turning a new leaf because he had a bad dream has to be one of the worst arcs I have ever seen in anime) as a sacrificial pawn in her never-ending lesbian crusade to torture Rika for the crime of wanting to live her own life.

And of course reddit thinks it's all fine because Satokk is a poor abused traumatized pure cinnamon bun uwu. This is all perfectly ok because she never got help.

It baffles me that from reading the two Higurashi subs, these people have seen Minagoroshi/Matsuribayashi/Miotsukushi. And yet it just sailed over their heads.

Also, clearly Minagoroshi and Matsuribayashi happened before Gou. How the fuck did Hanyuu not stay in that world and everyone but Rika just forgot she existed, much less was key in defeating Takano? That's been seriously bugging me this whole time.
 
Gou and Sotsu are so full of shitty writing and plot holes it’s embarrassing. My eyes nearly rolled to the back of my head when Satoko pulled the crocodile tears on Teppei.

I read through all your Gou and Sotsu griefing despite watching only two episodes of the original Higurashi. Well, now I have watched all the way through Himatsubushi-hen, and what I have seen makes me believe you even more about Gou and Sotsu being shit.

I saw Teppei send his niece out to buy him booze. I saw her stress vomit in the classroom because of his abuse. What the hell made the people behind Gou and Sotsu think redeeming Teppei was a good idea?

It gets even worse if you read the VN and you find out that Teppei was thinking about sexually abusing her in a couple of years after she passed puberty.

There's also a notorious TIP from Tatarigoroshi which implied that she had *already* been sexually abused, either by him or one of his friends.

It's also stated - both in the VN and the anime - that Teppei would make her walk on all fours while his friends were over, while they all laughed. The fact that R07 thought that he could just be redeemed in one episode because he had a couple of realistic bad dreams where he got his comeuppance and then went straight to cuddling and trying to cook for her is beyond all taste.

Also there's no fucking way just rolling around on the ground and playing in rice paddies is at all convincing without actual bruising/scrapes to show for it. If she was to trick her uncle into thinking someone shoved her to the ground, there'd be abrasions to show it. Satoko's not even trying to be convincing at this point.

So I wondered what I would have done if it was my job to write this Higurashi to Umineko fanfic, I actually think I came with a far better story.
Ground rules:
* Retread of original series with similar cases.
* Satoko is lambda.
* A mystery.

So it goes like this: The show markets itself as an AU story where it is Satoko who goes back in time rather than Rika, weird Himanizawa syndrome shit still happens and everybody dies every arc.
The big reveal is that it was Rika is also a time traveler and was the one that caused everything. The reason being that she did manage to break out of the cycle, but the cost of doing it was some of the club dying. Satoko discovers about it (somehow) and confronts Rika about why she didn't save everyone, which turns violent and both die and restart from zero. Rika, already reaching the conclusion that to make an omellete you need to break some eggs, tries to remake the original happening to break out of the cycle again. Satoko, without the knowledge of Rika being the mastermind, (unknowingly) fucks around with Rika's plan trying to save everyone. They discover about one another and the conflict becomes more violent, and by the end both lose their original goals and humanity.

There. Both characters are now somewhat likable (as long as it's clear Rika doing it out of desperation rather than sadistic glee), with clear motives. Even the mystery can be more fun since you have the two sides butting against each other.

Why didn't he ask Chie what she meant about Satoko not being at school, you know because he thought she was? How about just confront Chie and ask her face-to-face about her supposed picking on a little girl? Or have her come inside to meet Satoko with him watching to see if Chie tries anything? Of course, it's so that the plot can continue on as though it's a normal Tatari world. That's the only reason why Teppei does the exact thing that would make everyone think that he's doing what he does in literally every other Tatari world. What an idiot and what a shit, contrived plot.
