Tired of the stupid dyke with piercings character showing up in my vidya.
The worst part of these stereotype characters is that they don't even have interesting dialogue. It's fine to have stereotyped characters, everyone fits into some kind of stereotype, but if that's all they are they're incredibly boring.

Bill is a Vietnam vet. He is a dangerous grizzled hardass with plenty of demons but he knows how to lighten up and not brood and sulk constantly.
Louis is a corporate drone. He keeps the positive attitude that got him through his old life even though it might not do him any good anymore. L4D's straight man/punching bag.
Francis is a biker/convict. You'd think he'd be a psycho raider type but he just likes killing zombies and making fun of his friends.
Zoey is a young college student. She already struggled with self-esteem and competency before the outbreak and needs to come to terms with her new life.

vs.

Hoffman is a conspiracy theorist. He talks about conspiracies.
Walker is a competent Black dude. He is Black.
Holly is a quirky young woman. She makes jokes and is quirky.
Evangelo is young. He's nervous and naive.

Can you really be surprised when this is a part of the dev team?

Also when I first saw Nick, I thought he was some mafia dude.
He is implied to be several times through the game. He also has a ring with the same logo on one of Francis' tattoos.

For all the problems Evolve had character interactions and designs were absolutely not one of them. They were some of the best to come out of a multiplayer game-as-a-service game, and the lore was actually quite interesting and well developed, to the point the plot actually went foward with each dlc (just check out how the "hunter packs" were getting more and more crazy as time went on) and main writer even wrote some short stories for it in his free time.

He's apparently left Turtlerock after Evolve and went on to have his own successful kickstarted about something related to DnD. Dunno who's writing for this game but it sure doesn't seem to have the same quality.

On a side note it's interesting that we're in a far flung enough future that we're getting nostalgic revivals/spiritual successors of 7th gen ips like B4D and the Dead Space reboot, boy do I feel old.

From how I've heard it told, L4D was a total mess. Turtle Rock can't make L4D3 cause they sold all rights with the first one to Valve. Valve cleaned it up enough to get it out the door, but immediately rebuilt it from the ground up in to L4D2, later porting the original all into it.

That's why L4D2 came out so soon after 1. One was a sloppy pile of code, and two was essentially the game concept rebuilt by Valve.

So I've been whelmed this whole time hearing that the people that couldn't make the first one are trying again.
It makes sense given the radical visual change the game underwent from it's beta phase to the final game, the designs of the characters and whatnot, everyone originally looked more generic, the final game made them standout more, now Back 4 Blood's characters look like the beta L4D characters did, really makes you think.

The dykes are way more played out and generic than bald space marines and white Nathan Drake everyman type characters ever were.

And bald space marines and Nathan Drake types were commonplace, but the dykes are everywhere these days.

The Asian chick with the glasses is a hottie at least.

It's nice to finally see a zombie IP where the army isn't Satan incarnate, though.
dunno, the strain: the videogame isn't that much different unless you go HAM with the zombie angle like nazi zombie army. maybe they should've done that.

more like desperation because the industry is that creatively bankrupt...

easy to write, easy to get. with the added bonus you can do literally do anything with a white dude, it's like a blank canvas.
doesn't work for dykes, no one is really interested in them since they're not interesting to begin with. that's the problem when your single character trait and look is your sexuality, not personality. or tough black chick if you wanna replace sexuality with politics...

For the most part, Dead by Daylight has the same exact set of problems.
never played it, but it's not limited to asymmetrical games. battleborn had the same issue (where they went full retard and had like 7 different queues for a playerbase below 1000), lawbreakers never had the numbers to begin with. any game that isn't an outright success with the numbers to sustain matchmaking at least for a while will inevitably get fucked hard by it.

Usually the nostalgia cycle is around 20 years, so the fact that they're already trying to cash in on things from late in the decade instead of early in the decade, so it does kind of reek of desperation.

An interesting character has flaws, but if you're writing a female or minority character giving them flaws would be decried as sexism or racism, so you're stuck with characters even blander than bald space marines and that really says something.

I long for the days of good female characters like Heather in Silent Hill 3 or Jennifer in Rule of Rose, a female character is absolutely worth making a game around, but they should, ya know, actually be an interesting character, now a paper thin stereotype.

A good single player game has a chance to become a cult classic over time if it's good enough and have long legs, a failed multiplayer game is often going to literally be a thing of the past making zero money, doesn't seem like the smartest investment imo save of course that multiplayer is where the big money lies should you succeed, but it's a higher risk.

the thing is most multiplayer isn't designed to become a cult classic to begin with. imagine it like this, take any of the cult movies which were commercial flops at the time, but now you can only watch them via streaming services - which don't add them to their catalog because they were bombs. even a mediocre game does some things that are good and people like about it, and it can be built upon in the future. but if there's no way to play it the only "evolution", if it happens at all, is based on mainstream FOTM AAA shit that only has the numbers due to marketing and being the only game in town. it's similar to mods which the industry needs as an idea incubator but is too shortsighted and greedy to understand that and rather pushes yearly sequels and dlc.

Looking back at the old designs, I have to say that the resemblance is uncanny.

the fuck is a Purple Francis??
You do know you can just Google something that you don't know....right?
Purple Francicomes originates from a time when someone vandalized the Left 4 Dead wiki and added a secret 5th character.

Btw there were a lot more campaign poster edits but sadly a lot of them are gone and missing after the jannies swept everything up.

It's obvious that Turtle Rock didn't have much to do with the quality of the original L4D. Has been for years, and while i'm glad at least SOMEONE is attempting to make a new L4D(as valve can't be assed to now.), i just wish it was someone more competent.
There was a similar game called Earthfall. Had a similar feeling to how B4B looks. Generic, unlikable characters, and a generic modern setting. The big gimmick was you could set up barricades that could be upgraded by sticking various objects on it. So a fence with a propane tank would be a fire fence. I think it could have been fun, but the game was dead on arrival and bots were useless.

I've always considered L4D to be in spirit a Valve game, it says it all that if someone didn't know any better they wouldn't realize it wasn't the exact same team of devs between 1 and 2.
