Human progress has been due to progressives

Human society has been enormously improved since The Enlightenment, chiefly because crusading liberals have overcome conservative resistance — time after time.

Modern democracy arose because America’s radical Founders renounced the divine right of kings and took up arms against England and King George III. They created a government of the people, with no aristocracy.

Slavery ended because radical abolitionists hammered the entrenched institution until the Civil War wiped it out.

Women gained the right to vote because radical suffragettes fought for decades against their inferior status. Couples gained the right to birth control because radical feminists battled against prudes and the church.

Workers gained the right to organize unions because Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal policies defeated corporate opposition and legalized it. Retirees gained Social Security pensions because the progressive New Deal framework created the safety net program. Jobless people gained unemployment benefits and worker’s compensation because the New Deal created them, too. And it set the 40-hour work week, banned child labor and set a minimum wage.

The historic civil rights movement and the progressive Supreme Court under Chief Justice Earl Warren struck down America’s cruel Jim Crow segregation. The Warren court also ended government-led prayer in schools — and wiped out state laws against birth control. Later liberal justices gave women and girls a right to choose to end pregnancies.

Censorship of sexy books, magazines and movies was wiped out by progressive court cases. So were bluenose laws forcing stores to close on the Sabbath. Taboos against lotteries, liquor clubs and other “sins” fell away. Strides toward universal health care as a human right for everyone have included Medicare, Medicaid, Children’s Health Insurance, veteran care, government employee coverage and, finally, Obamacare.

Conservatives tried to prevent teaching of evolution in public schools, but they failed.

Conservatives tried to block sex education in public schools, but they failed.

Conservatives tried to teach “creation” in public schools, but they failed.

Right-wingers made racial intermarriage a crime, but the liberal Warren court legalized it. Puritanical right-wingers jailed gay lovers, but progressives on the high court legalized gay sex. Fundamentalists fought gay marriage, but Democratic state legislatures and the Supreme Court legalized it.

Humanism means helping people, and secularism means doing it without supernatural religion. Decade after decade, century after century, progressive reformers defeated conservatives to advance secular humanism. At the same time, churches and their magical beliefs faded enormously from Western democracies.
Pioneer Unitarian minister Theodore Parker said that the arc of history bends toward justice — and Martin Luther King Jr., who regularly attended Unitarian services as a young man, adopted the phrase masterfully.

The past shows a clear pattern of human progress — of civilization bending toward justice. Let’s hope it continues.

Human progress has been due to RednecksWithGuns/Swords/Spears/Etc willing to hurt and kill outsiders and evil to protect their family/home. Human progress has been due to feeding humanity has been able to go from family farms to mass production facilities. The people helping push boundaries were able to do so; because someone was able to be a gun-toting bible-thumping redneck willing to protect and feed them.

Burn in Hell, child-fuckers.

Ah yes, the people who live to CENSOR, run you OUT OF JOB AND HOME and make everything they don't like ILLEGAL are the true source of human progress and creativity......

No one tell the author that progressives of the early 1900s championed eugenics and Social Darwinism.

Yeah, when I define "my side" as "the side responsible for everything good in history" then I can do all sorts of conflating.
The only problem is determining what those "good things" are. Is it progress to let children decide to chop their dicks off? Was the effort to eliminate the Jews progress? Is securing our elections progress?

Progress has been made by society's weirdos like Albert Einstein and Nikola Tesla, but it's also been made by ruthless business men like Edison.

George the third was a post-Cromwell and post-Henry the 8th faggot. He was neither a true king nor did he have divine right to rule. He was the puppet of a heretical parliament and church, nothing more. Just like today, progressives did nothing but destroy older progressives in a never-ending chain of societal devolution. Had every progressive been properly burned at the stake, your kids wouldn't be trooning out and subsequently an heroing, your women would not be whoring themselves, and your cities wouldn't be getting razed by non-western savages.

So it's never ok to like things how they are? If you think life is fine then you're against progress and you need to be defeated? This is just more bolshevik propaganda preaching the never-ending revolution and part of the reason why shit like the EZLN still manages to exist.

What are today's progressives but tomorrow's conservatives?
That is backwards. There's always something new, and there's always a conservative mindset who has been born into the new thing, while progressives look for a new cause to champion. TERFS and SWERFS aren't people who turned conservative when progress outgrew them, they're progressives with a different entropic inclination than the one that modern society has selected, and they would gladly break their alliance with conservatives to advocate new acts of insanity once the three have won.

Not even gonna read it all but it seems like unironic cope. It would not be hard to find major advancements made by people you disagree with, regardless of the "side" you're on.

The article and by extension those progressives sound very religious the way they speak about themselves. On top of it a lot of them have a saviour complex. Not to speak about their morals and the need to impose those morals and values on others no matter if they want or not. Overall they‘re no better than those nice Christians, who tortured and killed witches and nonbelievers to save their poor misguided souls.

You missed the point of the phrase. The progressive they're talking about from the past would find the progressives today abhorrent. You're thinking right and left, I'm thinking more what brings about change which is what progressives are supposed to be more than anything particularly political. Like how the left has hijacked liberal as their tag when they're basically anything but at this point. Then you have people saying Gen Z will change things to be more in line with old fashioned American ideals, however you feel about that, but if that isn't the present cultural dominance would that not be progressive to change it? It's something like that scene in The Simpsons.

Lmao, so you're back to pretending the Founders were a contemporary antifa right before you snap back to calling them a bunch of racist colonizers who only rebelled because they wanted to own even more slaves and genocide even more natives.

Progress needs a defined goal. It cannot, by its very nature, be an end unto itself.

You do not have progress if you keep moving the goalposts; at best, you have change, and at worst, you have entropy.

The future has never turned out to be Bob Chipman's Star Trek Space Communism Cumbayah. The future is where hopes and dreams get viciously and brutally murdered.

And in today's case, the Left are not progressive. They're illiberal dogmatists who make the Spanish Inquisition and North Korea look tolerant.

Alas, I'm sure these fedora-tipping fools are cocksure that they will never be lined up against the wall for thoughtcrime. They'll get what they wish for in due time.

*conveniently ignores the French Revolution*

Human progress was made by necessity not by bleeding heart retards.

None of this is human progress, it's all social progress and only really first world progress. Slavery, no female (or populace) suffrage, no worker's rights, censorship etc are common in plenty of countries around the world. Unless niggers and muzzies are no longer human your entire argument is just retarded.
Even without a lot the things listed in the article, the first world would still be just as comfortable and luxurious as it is now, just solely for whites and asians.

This author erroneously conflates all progress with good progress. Yeah, progressive change has produced a lot of good throughout history, yet it's also produced a lot of bad. We don't necessarily hear about most of the bad changes because they tend to get reversed and then shuffled away.

Only showing the good that change has brought does not change the above. It doesn't change that eugenics was considered progress by the perpetrators. It doesn't change that communism was considered progress by its supporters. And I'm too lazy to look it up but I'm pretty certain rhetoric like the author's here was used to justify them in their time.

(Hell, it doesn't even consider that there might be facets of modern society that we might one day look back on in shame)

And sometimes the benefit of society is to stand our ground and resist foolish change, else God only knows what horrific shit we'd practice today.

Sometimes moving forward is what takes you to a cliff's edge. And at that point, where does another step forward leave you?
