People Are Pointing Out Privileges That Lots Of People Don't Even Recognize, And This Is So Important

Sun, July 25, 2021

Recently, Reddit user u/vianneyal posed the question, "What is something people don't realize is a privilege?" The thread quickly went viral as users shared the things that so many of us take for granted as we go about our day.

Here are some of the most thought-provoking responses:

1."Sewers. A literal city of tunnels you never see, draining and moving water in and out of your town/city, completely hidden from view. It's a fucking luxury, and you'd be surprised how much of the world doesn't have that while the rest of the world never even thinks about it."

u/Happy8Day

2."Clean water."

u/JakeySan

"This. I once worked on a First Nations reserve with no potable water. Everyone had these big containers you dropped off at a water station, got filled, then carried back home. Not only did it suck to lug heavy containers of water back to your house, it also sucked to have to constantly watch how much water you have and plan when you need to get a refill, as they only refilled your containers on certain days of the week."

3."Buying groceries without having to carefully consider prices."

4."Having access to dentists in childhood."

u/Fr8ndInm8-2

"The worst is when your parents know you need regular dental care, but they're too poor to take you every six months. My parents bit the bullet and took us in for a checkup (and a few inevitable fillings) every 3–5 years."

u/GingerMau

5."Having your own room/space. A lot of people — and especially families — around the world have to share living spaces."

u/nigelfitz

6."Hot showers. I was homeless for a year and a half, and there was a time I blew $50 on a motel room specifically to take a hot shower. I remember pulling off my cold wet socks and just collapsing in the hot water, sobbing. Felt like all my problems went away immediately."

12."The other night, I decided to change my bedding randomly and realized how lucky I am to be able to swap to another clean set on a whim. Clean laundry, multiple blankets... Those things make me feel rich. A lot of people don't have a clean, safe bed to sleep in."

14."I noticed that I was privileged with eating to my taste. My dad told me how in Mexico, they ate what they had. It was rural farm life. He continued to eat that way even living here in America. He would buy me and my sister whatever we wanted and make eggs and beans for himself."

u/maybe_secretlysatan

"Poverty and hunger do that to you. I eat leftovers and ration my food. We are a family of three: two adults and one toddler. 16."Weekends off. I think about this every Saturday when the gardener comes to mow. He brings his son to help him. My kids are sitting in their PJs working on coding projects, while his son is out helping mow lawns. That is his kid's Saturday off school vs. my kids'."

it's going to be 97f at lunch today, I'm going to go riding my bike and probably not break a sweat to the point that I would need a shower, suck it fatties

Reddit posts does not an article make.

Edit: oh wait it’s buzzfeed

On the one hand I think people should be thankful for life’s blessings but on the other hand the “...and it’s so important” in that headline is obviously saying this has some positive political effect. Can someone tell how this kind of shit could be useful for anything other than making you feel bad or for wielding political clout over someone else?

At least this article focuses on valid examples as opposed to the 10000 other ones being published this week.

Fucking up due to poor life choices and have progressives blame White Supremacy for these consequences.

"18 Advantages to Western Civilization That Lots Of People Don't Even Recognize, and Why it is a Good Thing"

Yahoo's 1965 vintage articles be wild.

Journalists that post "articles" that are just copy and pasted from social media should be sent to a colony.

And you don't have half of those if you're poor.

I don't think this is damning for White Privilege as they think it is.

Yes, those things are privileges and there is nothing wrong with them. Bless them if you have them, fight hard to get them if you don't and don't hate those who do.

3."Buying groceries without having to carefully consider prices."
Okay so...I guess I do not have to do that but I have been raised to do so. Probably the result of my parent's parent's experiencing The Great Depression and my parents being young parents with multiple kids. Even once they both started making more money they continued to impress upon us how important saving money was and to always consider prices.

So I guess my privilege is having parents that did not suck.

2."Clean water."

u/JakeySan

"This. I once worked on a First Nations reserve with no potable water. Everyone had these big containers you dropped off at a water station, got filled, then carried back home. First Nations makes me think Canada right? Was the government unwilling to work with the res to get clean water or was the res unwilling to work with the government?

One of these is kind of evil the other is harmful obstinance.

8."Getting as much sleep as you need."

u/Character_Comb_3439
So if someone is rich but does not sleep well are they not privileged?

1."Sewers. A literal city of tunnels you never see, draining and moving water in and out of your town/city, completely hidden from view. It's a fucking luxury, and you'd be surprised how much of the world doesn't have that while the rest of the world never even thinks about it."

u/Happy8Day
Sewers have been a thing for a really really really long time and not having them is not a lack of privilege it is a sign you need to save and move.

16."Weekends off. I think about this every Saturday when the gardener comes to mow. He brings his son to help him. My kids are sitting in their PJs working on coding projects, while his son is out helping mow lawns. That is his kid's Saturday off school vs. my kids'."

"The danger is that someday, if my kids become programmers or whatever white collar job, they will look back and say, 'It's because I worked hard to gain these skills,' taking for granted the privilege of the time to do it."

u/CJs2cents3456
Is this guy implying that his gardener takes no days off during the week? It is possible but that is an issue beyond privilege. Maybe you should whispers pay him more so he can take days off.

If it is such a fucking issue in your mind that your kids are still in their PJs on Saturday coding get off your fatass, bust out the lawn mower, clippers, rakes, and do your own yard work with your kids. It did not stop me from being huwhite collar.

The signalling in this is so strong in this quote I can taste sour apple.

17."Air conditioning."

u/93yourcultleader93

"Especially with people dying in heat waves these days. There is no escape from a deadly heat wave. It’s a luxury, but I wish it were a standard thing."
People have died in heat waves forever. The difference is their death was not marketable. Air conditioning, at least in the US and probably most of the civilized world is not impossible to obtain...it is called a fan.

I lived in NYC without AC for four years. I bought two fans and it was all I needed. I drank more booze water and somehow made it through.

12."The other night, I decided to change my bedding randomly and realized how lucky I am to be able to swap to another clean set on a whim. Clean laundry, multiple blankets... Those things make me feel rich. A lot of people don't have a clean, safe bed to sleep in."

u/Anticrepuscular_Ray
Yes, a lot of people do not. A lot of people should but are lazy or plan poorly so they only have one rancid set of sheets.

6."Hot showers. I was homeless for a year and a half, and there was a time I blew $50 on a motel room specifically to take a hot shower. I remember pulling off my cold wet socks and just collapsing in the hot water, sobbing. Felt like all my problems went away immediately."

u/reduxde
I feel like a lot of these are just luxuries people realized they had...hot showers are not a privilege. Your parents pay for them then you earn them. I know the narrative is that you can never earn privilege but you can earn luxuries.

15."Driving a vehicle."

u/bba89
This one actually is a privilege in one respect but an earned luxury in another. It is a privilege in that nowhere are you guaranteed a right to drive.

18.And finally, "Travel. There are a lot of privileges within that broad category, too. Men can sometimes travel alone to places that women might feel unsafe visiting. People in the LGBTQ community are sometimes at greater risk than others. White people are sometimes treated better as tourists than people of color."

u/glitterlok

9."Having a pet. No matter your socioeconomic status or location, having a pet means you have that much extra space, time, and financial freedom."

u/pertain2u

10."Being able to quit a job without fear of losing financial stability."

u/AMiniMinotaur
I am lumping these three together because this is already spergtastically long:
No one has a right to travel so yes it is a privilege. Some people impoverish themselves with it, some people have rich families that allow them to do it, other people go without other things to do it. That said outside of North Korea and China travel was pretty easy...before The Fauci Virus.

If you are broke you should not have a pet. Sorry you should not have one. Get a plant. You might love that cat or dog but it is going to need care at some point and it might financially damage you or cause you to make that animal live in misery.

Who are these fucking people? Once I have left a job without another job lined up and that was because I was getting a substantial severance.

Most of these do less to illustrate privilege and more to show how fucking spoiled and out of touch people are with reality that they do not understand the difference between things you as an adult must earn and things you just get.

So I'm considered an asshole now for general advancements in society. Neat. I guess I should set up a trip to Dehli so I can go apologize to Pajeet for the advent of toilet witches. I'll make a stop in Johannesburg to apologize for that pesky, hard to maintain "modern" infrastructure too.

I like how it shows the liberal mindset inadvertently. They have some guilt about not working hard, they realize they’re privileged, specifically with money, but they don’t know how to manage it.

5 dollars the Gardner’s son is based and hates shitlibs.
