I'm not a fan of Radiohead in any capacity – not even their early stuff – but I somewhat respect Thom Yorke when he responded to the negative criticism of their band playing shows in Israel. Just like Mercury, he pointed out that the fans who live in a certain nation aren't reflective of their controversial governments.
Apartheid wasn't so bad. Streets were clean, progress was happening everywhere and south Africa was a nuclear power that was considered a top tier economic force. For all of its bullshit, there is no way P. Botha and the white regime would of ever let Black unemployment or poverty fester to levels we see today. Hunger didn't exist in South Africa until the moderna era. The collapse the White Regime came from international pressure, not because people were starving or out of work.
year after year new coats of paint to can no longer hide the cracks.
Partially opportunists for sure, but a lot of the unrest is coming from the Zulu tribe who would rather see SA burn than admit their leader did something wrong

Lmao, isn't he the guy who showered to avoid catching AIDS, and had the government pay for a personal swimming pool using the logic of it being a fire safety device?
SA government post-apartheid is corrupt as fuck (to the surprise of nobody), Zuma has been running from these charges for years and now that they caught up to him he likely ordered his goons to start some unrest in the tribe, chances are this isn't going away any time soon and even if it does it'll just boil over again if he's convicted
Fun story. So Zulus think of themselves as these bad-ass warriors. During Apartheid the Zulus primarily made up the armed resistance (uMkhonto we Sizwe or the Spear of the Nation) while groups like the Xhosas primarily made up the political wing (the doves and the hawks).
When Apartheid ended it was thanks to international political pressure organised and motivated for by the political wing not because the armed struggle blew up civilians and got their asses handed to them in most of the major armed conflicts with the Apartheid government (in fact many Zulus joining the IFP did a damn good job of hampering the end of apartheid because again Zulus think they're bad-asses).
This then meant that the ANC leadership was largely Xhosa. Mandela was a Xhosa, and his successor MBeki was also a Xhosa. In fact I don't believe there was any Zulu leaders in political side of the ANC until Zuma. So Zuma was basically given control just to shut the Zulus up for a while.
Zuma despite never having been part of the armed resistance was keen to capitalise on his tribal roots and their connection to the armed resistance, using 'struggle songs' as part of his campaign.
This song translating to 'Bring my Machine Gun'.
Now in retrospect it was argued that Zuma was actually part of the intelligence division of the armed resistance but that was likely BS, he probably brought someone coffee that one time.
So anyway that's why Zulu's got so pissed because Zuma had to go to jail.

The origin of the Aids pandemic has been traced back to 1920s Kinshasa, in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo, scientists say.

Although this could just be Globohomo revisionism
Hard to trust things pre-internet. You have no idea how the story could of changed. Its easy to burn physical evidence and make something up and as time passes its just accepted as truth.
well consider some guys higher up with influence in the early 1990's just saying this started in the 1920's in africa. Who is gonna check that? Kinda like how people thought for thousands of years that Jewish Slaves built the pyramids
