The truth was Obama had 8 years to accelerate much of the existing rot and decay that's set in since the Cold War ended and Trump was able to put up a strong show of force but it was beyond him to just magically 'fix' the military in four years any more than he could just magically 'fix' the country. Naturally under Obama's senile continuation the mask is going to come off in a very inelegant manner. It's more like the military went from the most amazing, technologically sophisticated fighting force the world had ever seen in 1991 to this pozzed hollow force after three decades of fruitless forever wars, MIC bloat, and now neoliberal social experimentation. But who knows, the military was a shambles after Vietnam too so it might still recover.

It's a problem that goes beyond defense spending, healthcare and education are the same way too. On the flipside you have people thinking that defense spending as bloated as it is is a piggybank you can just draw blank checks from to dump on education/healthcare/some pet social cause like reparations. But at the same time just cutting money from them isn't going to fix anything either as the special interests that profit off of each sector will always lobby to keep theirs.

The problem is none of that money ever goes to the right areas. Have you ever taken a look at the average school district budget and where the wages go? The problem is much the same in the military as either area is too much of of a sacred cow to trim any budgets. Don't even get me started on the mess that is social security and the effect illegal immigration is having there.

Nothing unique there. As Iceland Heavy up above mentioned, there isn't a single part of government spending that doesn't do fuck-all in proportion to how much is spent. We spend roughly twice as much on SS and Medicare as we do on the military, and with even less to show for it. I mean, just under a trillion annually for a military that could take on the entire world at once and have a good chance at coming out on top, even in its current dilapidated state, is a fucking bargain in my opinion.
