Honestly, its entirely straight forward as hell the modern trans movement is just making it into something its not.
Back in the day in Native groups, if you were a shitty dude and also liked other dudes they'd say you were "two-spirit" and basically it just was a nicer way to call someone a faggot and exclude them from hunting/warring parties. There weren't really women in this category because most lesbians flat out don't exist in a lot of cultures (think how in Muslim nations gay men get killed/forced to troon out but they never talk about gay women), they don't acknowledge them and just force them into a marriage where they doubtlessly enjoy marital rape. I'm not sure why trans people want to champion this particular concept, but they're turning it into something it wasn't.
EDIT: I will add that its almost impossible to find out any accurate information about this anymore because of the retcon to the lore that trannies have pulled, its actually a bit insane how far they've changed a literal fact.
