I was hoping for Vietnam.
After the way they treated WWII in the last game, I'm not sure if I can trust them to handle other past conflicts. If they were willing to add Tom Cruise, anime ninja girl, female Psycho Mantis, and the Phantom of the Opera for that conflict, what would they do to Vietnam?

I wonder how much of an audience this game will really have when stuff like Squad exists. Battlefield isn't just competing with COD anymore.

Add Van Damme, a Vietnamese anime ninja girl, female Psycho Mantis only this time she's a dog, and Rey Skywalker (who can't be killed).

Nah speaking as a player of multiple shooters. The trend in the Nu battlefield community is they never played the refractor era games. Most started at BC2 and that’s who they appeal to now. Squad was for a minority of BF fans dice doesn’t care about anymore.

But Vietnam already had black and white US soldiers fighting together and women fighting for the Viet Cong, so you could already have it be a "diverse" group of player characters.

However because reflecting reality is never what Woke is about, I'd bet they'd also want to have female soldiers on the US side as well, which would be as utterly laughable and absurd as you can get.

Female soldiers in historical shooters are probably here to stay ever since COD WWII uncorked that bottle.

Maybe I wouldn't mind so much if the devs weren't jerking themselves raw over being "brave" and "fighting bigotry".

No, my concern with DICE would be them making wacky cosmetics and asinine elite characters that clash with the settings. They were this close to making robotic arms a thing for a WWII game, the fact that they even considered such a thing tells me that they no longer care about how they portray these conflicts.

It would be less of a problem if they just said "yeah, it's a video game, we don't care about historical accuracy" but instead they always want to gaslight us into thinking it's reality and it IS historically accurate.

I honestly wouldn't have minded what they've done as much if they went all out and created a alternate history title like Wolfenstein. Say that society went through advanced technological and social progress, utilize prototype/blueprinted technology, and have a tone similar to the Bad Company titles, and V might've been easier to swallow.

With what they chose to do instead, the wacky cosmetics and the "serious" tone mixed about as well as oil and water.

No studio in Current Year has the right mixture of steady courage and unflinching insanity to show women soldiers being run through the meat grinder. Much as I think it would be an interesting setting to have both sexes be treated as equally disposable, that shit's not going to happen in our lifetimes.

In certain games sure(like COD). But, I'm sure there will be plenty of historical shooters that will stick to accuracy.

Battlefield just gave up any pretense.

To be fair, women soldiers being run through the meat grinder is not very common in reality.

I didn't mind the whole "female soldiers in WW2" spin in and of itself with V. V just felt lesser than the objectively superior BF1.

The more I looked into that angle, I've came to realize that EA/Dice wanted to be "woke" in a setting that doesn't necessarily fit that agenda. In the worst way possible. And that agenda compromised a potentially good shooter inside and out.

Oh yes, other than the Pacific content I'd say that Battlefield V was the weakest title they've made in years.

It's just DICE used the woke content and wacky cosmetics as a distraction from the bugs and less content (notice how the criticism shifted over the course of the game's life?). They might rectify the latter for the next title after they got racked over the coals for it, but they'll likely cling to the former for back pats and money.

Not that I mind female soldiers for modern and future wars, I just know they'd expect people to suck their dick for it.

The WWII setting was tiring because of the saturation of WW2 games in the early 2000s. With such a surplus of WW2 games, you need to bring something interesting and new to the table.

I felt Battlefield V had potential with their "stories of the untold, unheard" with the WW2 setting. Many WW2 games only focus on the Americans vs the Germans. There's a lot of untapped storytelling and game design with WW2. A world war, encompassing the world in conflict.

The one criticism I understood with BFV is rewriting history to FIT an agenda.

Initially, I thought: "It's just a video game. You don't play video games for historical accuracy." I still agree with that, but imagine how offbase it would be having a WW2 game with prosthetic arms WITHOUT saying it's alternative reality.

Suspension of disbelief takes you only so far. If you start off with "Stories of the untold, unheard" and then whip out British cyborg woman, well, that's legitimately offensive.
