I’ve not played any of the Dragon Quest games. Considering that I only have a Switch and the graphics for the 1-3 ports look awful, would XI be a good entry into the series?
The best entry points are (imo) 3, 4, 8, and 11. They’re all good and they all reflect the tone of the rest of the series (while 5 is good, its lacking in that last part).

5 is second only to 3 in popularity in Japan, that's why the recent-ish Dragon Quest movie was based heavily on it, as well as its plot and characters being common pop-culture references in Japanese media.

The great thing about XI is that it's simultaneously a giant love letter to the classic games in the series and a good starting point for players looking to dip their toes into the franchise. If I were to compare it to anything, I'd say it's close in scope to Final Fantasy IX; lots of fun callbacks for veterans but not to the point where newcomers will feel totally lost. The story's fun and engaging, the characters are interesting, and the combat is the ultimate result of nearly 30 years of refinement. XI's an amazing game overall, not just as a Dragon Quest title, but as a JRPG as a whole.

TL DR: yes.

The whole Dragon Quest reveal thing has got me going through some old content I used to watch back in the day and I founds some cool stuff regarding DQ you guys might wanna check out. Clan of the Gray Wolf used to make this show called 16 bit gems and he made a whole month talking about dragon quest games and also about the games that gave DQ it's insperation.
He also made vids on 3 and 8 but I don't want to just spam the thread with vids of course. I highly recommend these two vids, stuff like say the ultima inspiration is fairly common knowledge nowadays but the presentation is top notch for it's time and the guy's enthusiasm for the series can not be understated

It would be interesting if they made a Dragon Quest in the same vein as Shin Megami Tensei where majority of the zones are based on real world locations.
The first half of Dragon Quest 3 is like that, though it's not obvious at first because they base it on the Japanese version of Earth's map where Japan is in the center.

So the current batch of rumors seem to be this:
12 is early in development but they're not getting rid of turn based combat
SE decided that westerners didn't like how tedious the game (DQ 11) was to grind
Traditional menu system is "gone" but not really, the menu system will now appear around characters at their specific turn.
You won't use directional buttons to navigate towards things like attack, defend, run away, but now press specific face buttons(I.e. Circle, X, Square) to execute default moves
Directional buttons will be battle commands as well
When you open a sub menu like Magic and need to select specific abilities then directional buttons will work
Party formation may play a bigger role than previous, specific layout formations are intended to grant you specific buffs and party wide abilities(i.e. like you're lower level and want to take on a much higher level enemy so you make a glass cannon formation and see if you can blast it down before it can kill you, or turtle and go ultra defense and slowly chip away and heal)
Square wants a risk vs reward system since many western players like Dark Souls, so higher level world boss enemies may appear in zones
Battles will now have a seamless start and begin when you bump into an enemy, so no loading or screen wipes
The Pep Powers may make a return but as a separate managed resource that the player can utilize at will rather than at random, basically a different and seperate version of MP.
They're taking inspiration from game of thrones because the main bad guy is supposed to be a handsome version of The Night King, so an undead plague and corruption is expected to be the big bad
Art style may not deviate much, but they're apparently aware that westerners think everyone from DQ is from Dragonball Z

I dunno it's not sounding too bad if any of these things pan out.

I definitely understand if Hori is personally tired of the traditional formula after 35 years and wants to change, I just don't want DQ to be forced to change to appease westerners or journos who want it to conform to their standards.

Haven't actually tried the Monsters and Slime spinoffs yet so I cannot comment on those, but I've heard good things about them

Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime on the DS is pretty fun. Gameplay is a little on the simple side, but still worth checking out.

There was a sequel on the 3DS, however it wasn't released here in the West, which sucks because Rocket Slime is one of my favorite DS games. I'll probably just emulate it one day.

It also had a prequel on the GBA, though it only had the platforming segments, and not the tanks battles of the 2nd game or the ship-to-ship combat of the third game.

As somebody who likes the way Octopath Traveler does 2D games, I'm hyped. I really hope more companies do what Octopath did and remake it that way instead of having soulless 3D remakes (I'm looking at you Secret of Mana!). Also they removed Denuvo from the PC port of Dragon Quest 11 so I don't have to pay for a game I already own on PC.

Original 11 or S, got it on switch when it first came out but kind of curious about how the PC version held up I remember hearing that people were mad that 11S PC wasn't as high fidelity as 11 was originally but is there mods to fix this?

The problem is changing the formula of a game usually ends up gutting the core of the series, that is why final fantasy went from JRPG to half baked Single Player MMOs.

S. The original 11 has been cracked for a while. The PC port of S is based off the Switch version so it isn't nearly as high fidelity as the original but it at least runs at 60fps and doesn't set my switch on fire. I'm not sure if there are mods to fix the fidelity outside of just editing the .ini files. If you have a hacked switch, you could convert the Switch save files over to the PC version of S using a bms script.

It depends on how it's handled, I mean Yakuza 7 changed genres to become a JRPG and that worked pretty good all things considered. It all depends on if Hori and his team are doing it because they believe they have a new spin for the gameplay or just cynically to try to rope westerners in being from being afraid of a game with "Big Numbers where you wait bunch" as some people mistakenly view turn based combat.

I think it's understandable to be a little cautious and pessimistic.

Yakuza 7 definitely comes from a place of love as you can tell those guys really gave a shit and cared for DQ with all the fun references.

What they're doing with DQXII sounds like they're trying to cater more to western audiences, who are by and large, mostly retards.

I've still got my hopes up for it by understand why some may not.
