A great example was Annie Lee Moss. When confronted about receiving mailings from communist groups and paying dues(they had the receipts) to communist party Annie Lee Moss claimed it was a case of mistaken identity.
The panel accepted it. The media claimed it was case closed.
Problem is in the area there were three people who could have been the Annie Lee Moss in question. Only one ever lived at her address. The other two never went by "Annie Lee Moss" but the media pushed the story that it was McCarthy being a thug and clearly the poor woman was innocent...except she was not.
She was a card carrying commie and the media covered it up. She was in the Army Signal Corps and was a communist and to this very day the first search you will see is "alleged" and "how annie lee moss survived McCarthyism".
