Bashi-bazouks were first organised in the 17th century, hundreds of years after Vlad. Vlad impaling captured Turks was a response to the rapid expansion of the 15th century Ottoman empire which had seized Constantinople a few years earlier. He also did the same thing to Saxons.
Damn, I had hoped it was around the same time to give extra context to his rep. I knew that contrary to the typical assumption he had not done it just because it was the only way he could get a proper semi going.

Granted if memory serves there's also slightly fewer details around the Ottoman Empire at that time. I believe many claim they never had slaves because there's no records of the same but given how most other cultures were at the time it seems unlikely.

Vlad Tepes used impalement as a method of extreme intimidation, in the same way as hanging, drawing, and quartering was used in England. The Dutch later used impalement for the same purpose in their Indonesian colonies in the 18th century.

Ottoman slavery was on a massive scale. The janissary corps was recruited entirely from Christian child conscripts forcibly converted to Islam. They were, however, no more extreme than other imperial powers of the time. Even the late empire with its multiple genocides was no worse than what Leopold did to the Congo.

Yeah, given what he was up against it was kind of unsurprising how far Vlad went and if memory serves his reputation within the country is far better than outside of it. And as you say he's not the only one to take more extreme measures.

Pretty much in line with what I had thought but, as with the UK workhouses, I have seen people claim that they weren't technically slaves so it should not be considered the same. I'd considered them akin to the Romans in their enslavement, it was never a targeted thing but more an attitude that they not just going to slaughter everyone so they had to do something with them.

And I think you need active effort to get in line with what happened in the Congo. Casual enslavement is not enough, you need to be actively being an asshole to line up with that.

Most historical empires used some form of slave labour. Extracting cheap labour from a defeated population was almost always more profitable than killing them entirely, though the latter sometimes happened, like with the Tasmanian aborigines, who went extinct. Genocide was almost never a rational decision, and much of it happened by famine and disease rather than direct murder. The transatlantic trade started because the native Americans who would otherwise be enslaved died of smallpox, so African kingdoms stepped up to sell replacement labour in exchange for European weapons and wealth.

Romans had small children working as agricultural slaves who were left with deformed skeletons from heavy labour. Their conditions were about as bad as anything in the Americas.

Oh believe me I know that sort of nonsense. My primary school in the UK included the workhouses as part of history lessons. Including the fact that the factory owners found it cheaper to have people dart between the massive machines to clean them while they were in operation rather than than pause them and just how easy it was for one of those machines to turn a human limb into paste.

And of course the African kingdoms were also selling to other markets even further back before the trans-Altantic trade. Heck there's very few places the Romans could reach they were not willing to sell slaves from.

That bit did not even need school education. A frigging French comic covered a sanitised version of it.

No one much really crossed the Sahara in antiquity. Massive trans-Saharan camel caravans started in the middle ages after the Islamic conquest, around the time that literacy arrived in the region.

Rome's contact with regions further south in Africa was mainly boats coming up from Nubia and Axum/Eritrea in the east, which traded slaves along with commodities.

Borrowed from @X Prime

I didn’t want to be disrespectful and put it in the “Pictures that made you laugh hysterically for ___ mins.” thread on Art & Literature
I like how the other guy just drops it at that point. As soon as the first dude doesn't immediately fall in line he's got nothing left.
Poor fucking woman. She's obviously on some kind of drug -- Heroin, maybe? I presume she's not planning on living long enough to hit the wall.
Worse than that: she's vegan.
Yep. Vegan. Even before she decided to be "Elliot", she was already the poster child for "Vegan malnutrition".

A lot of vegans try to claim "Bullshit, she's just older" but Page is just 34. Same age as Kesha and despite all the drugs she's done, Kesha looks much better:
Does she have implant abs?
Probably lipo/abdominal etching

True. Didn't the Phonecians handle a lot of the slave trade for the Romans from Africa, largely via the sea rather bothering with the Sahara? To the point that debatably they created the slave trade within Africa because the alternative for many coastal regions was a bunch of Phonecian vessels turning up with wide smiles and quotas to meet.

They did, but they were mostly trading slaves around the Mediterranean and North Africa, which was inhabited by Berbers and Egyptians. Slavery of black Africans was rare aside from the odd few people brought up from east Africa.

One of my cousins is Ellen's age. She still looks like a young college student and can even sometimes pass for high school. Normal balanced omnivore diet, maybe even a massive preference for bbq. The point is, Ellen looks like shit and her cult diet ruined her looks. That hairline should speak for itself.

Of course, the Mediterranean Sea was where most of this happened so it was limited to those parts of the continent bordering there rather than Africa as a whole.

How is murder real? Just pretend it isn't happening, if some black man is murdering you, don't even call the cops, just like close your eyes. Just enjoy your murder so you can be relieved of the pain of being a white man.
How Can Murder Be Real If Our Eyes Aren't Real

I can't remember anything, ever that remained so ripe for satire and was still treated as a sacred cow like this white supremacy schtick.

No one looks at what Dana Carvey did with the Church Lady 30+ years ago and thinks about leaping to feature films and cashing in. Instead, they are terrified of losers in dead end jobs or on the tugboat calling them names on twitter.

They have a conclusion (This is shit because the evil fucking white males I hate + lust after are involved)

They work backwards from the conclusion to find justifications (Here's some bullshit reasons why it must have been written by those stupid sexy white men)

Being proven wrong doesn't matter because the conclusion is set in stone, they just find some other justification (Yeah well the women writers must have been secretly bullied by a male writer and the women just wrote it because they were pandering towards people I hate)

It's literally religious thought.

"Oh god I can't emotionally manipulate everything in this scenario and make everything about me, my narrative, and my wants. THIS IS RACIST! HOW DARE YOU"
