It avoids destroying someone's life for either a crime that hasn't been proven yet or for a crime that means you're unlikely to be a further danger to others. Those accused of murder don't get bail. Some countries don't really have it and it can be pretty brutal with people getting locked up for months for crimes that don't go to court, whereupon they get released and have to rebuild their lives. Imagine getting locked up for 6 months. You lose your job and by the way you still have bills to pay. You might think they'd get compensation but often they don't. Also, some countries don't use money for bail - it just means you get fucked harder once they catch you.

Nobody got hurt. I think both were cases of the government not wanting a perceived idiot to have access to a weapon.
