The statue was made by African-American artist Sanford Biggers. Its 25 feet tall.

Why is it in the classical pose for Zeus holding a torch which is also commonly used in Greek iconography? Weren't there any African statue traditions to draw from that wouldn't otherwise be considered a racist caricature?

From a Google search, it looks like the artist produces a lot of neat looking geometric quilt and textile art which I’m really enjoying looking through.

I’d be interested in learning more about his artistic journey for this sculpture; why he chose not to incorporate those same intricate geometric patterns and themes into his piece, and instead decided to go with a giant-ass bronze bobble head doll.

Maybe not the goal of the artist but whoever decided it should be there, maybe commissioned it, their goal was that it needs to be offensive and demoralizing to yts who have to see it every day.
