There have been various instances of female lions with manes, but they never actually grow as huge/dark as a true male lions would. A zoo in Oklahoma had a one of their lionesses suddenly start to grow a mane and act more like a male (scent spraying, mounting other females, roaring more etc), but after exams and tests, it turned out there was a small tumour near her adrenal gland that was causing her to have increased testosterone.
