I think most of them are teens who have no idea how sexual attraction works and think that if they don't feel the need to fuck anyone in particular, it means they are asexual. Some just have a case of low libido, either naturally or as a result of something else (depression, for example), and don't seem to understand that this means nothing and might be a temporary thing. Also of course couples with today's young people need to label the fuck out of everything, and define their whole identity based on non-existing sexualities and "gender identities". Being asexual also means you get into the nice huge umbrella of LGBTQIA+, makes you special and different in a way and automatically gifts you oppression points.

So yeah, in a way it is attention seeking, but no more - I'd say even less - than declare yourself non-binary and any other ridiculous so-called gender identity. As of Steph, IMO it's a combination of her extreme tendency to label herself (and anyone else) to death, her need to be as LGBTQIABCDLMNOP as possible, and an excuse as to why she doesn't need to go out there and start dating - maybe as some type of a defense mechanism. She doesn't seem to have a single soul to talk to outside of her interactions with her parents (strangers on the internet don't count), and her ace status seems to me at least partly a result of it, but also somewhat partly causing it; if you are ace, what's the point in going out and start dating, right? Yeah, I know, I know, you can be in a romantic relationship without having sex. I don't remember if Steph also says she is aro - I don't remember her mentioning that... I speculate that maybe it's because ironically, her actual hypersexuality makes her think that you have to be sexually active in order to be in a relationship. She just see this as a package.
