You can get a decent M&P Sporter for ~800 last time I checked, and if you’re desperate and willing to go into the dark zone, you can get a century AK for like ~700. 7.62x39 will blow through pretty much all soft body armor within 100 meters, hell out to 200. Shooting standing and unsupported isn’t the easiest, but I put together a better group on an 8 inch target at 25 yards over Vz58 irons. And those are pretty terrible irons.

None, really. Unless you’re behind cover that saps the energy of the bullet enough, but at that point it’s still useless. Plates also can be iffy at sub 100 ranges.

Century’s Vz sporters are pretty solid, and their early FAL/L1A1 imports are rather good for the money you spend on them. And a century AK is better for the Unicorns as it’s not like they’re going to be running 3k rounds a year out of it or something, they’re just posturing so cheap shit works fine.
