Musical notation has been branded "colonialist" by Oxford professors hoping to reform their courses to focus less on white European culture, The Telegraph can reveal.

Academics are deconstructing the university's music offering after facing pressure to "decolonise" the curriculum following the Black Lives Matter protests.

The Telegraph has seen proposals for changes to undergraduate courses, in which some staff question the current curriculum's "complicity in white supremacy".

Professors said the classical repertoire taught at Oxford, which spans works by Mozart and Beethoven, focuses too much on "white European music from the slave period".

Documents reveal that faculty members, who decide on courses that form the music degree, have proposed reforms to address this "white hegemony", including rethinking the study of musical notation because it is a "colonialist representational system".

Teaching notation which has not "shaken off its connection to its colonial past" would be a "slap in the face" for some students, documents state, and music-writing studies have been earmarked for rebranding to be more inclusive.

Academics have also proposed that musical skills such as learning to play the keyboard or conducting orchestras should no longer be compulsory because the repertoire "structurally centres white European music" which causes "students of colour great distress".

It is also noted that the "vast bulk of tutors for techniques are white men".

A faculty checklist devised to tick off student demands notes that hip hop and jazz are on the curriculum at Oxford, providing "non-Eurocentric" topics of study.

But professors questioning whether the "structure of our curriculum supports white supremacy" have also highlighted the issue of an "almost all-white faculty" giving "privilege to white musics".

As a proposed change, “special topics” for students to choose from instead would be relabelled as “Introduction to Sociocultural and Historical Studies” to reflect the faculty’s new focus.

Options focussing on French composer Machaut and Shucbert’s last decade could be changed to focus on “African and African Diasporic Musics”, “Global Musics”, and “Popular Musics” under one proposal.

Another suggestion is that pop music will come into greater focus, allowing students to study mooted events in popular culture including “Dua Lipa’s Record Breaking Livestream” and “Artists Demanding Trump Stop Using Their Songs”.

Following a faculty "away day", staff state in documentation - seen by the Telegraph - that “arising from international Black Lives Matter demonstrations, the Faculty Board proposed making changes to enhance the diversity of the undergraduate curriculum”.

One student demand of the reformed curriculum, which is yet to be decided, is that “No tutors should speak disparagingly to students about any element of the curriculum”.

However, in internal documents there was dissent from some faculty members, with one stating that colleagues focussed on music from before 1900 “are often implicitly accused of being concerned exclusively with music that is 'Western' and 'white'”.

There was also disconnect over the use of the term Western Art Music being used. It is a modern term intended to be more inclusive than “classical” by recognising other culture’s classical traditions.

The development of Western classical music and its notation predate the establishment of the trade in African slaves, both having their roots in Medieval liturgical music like Greogorian chanting.

Major figures in the development of classical music including JS Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven emerged in the 17th and 18th centuries.

The University of Oxford has been approached for comment.

This "decolonizing" shit is going to make China the next superpower. You better believe that they care about making their citizens learn normal math and music and science rather than worrying about hurting someone's feelings.
China did all this shit in the 1960's. Decolonizing was a meme for them 60 years ago. And I would argue they're still recovering from how it fucked their intelligentsia.

i simultaneously hate and feel sorry for the normies who predominantly made up the BLM marches last year. to them they were merely expressing their belief that racism bad and george floyd dindu nuffin, which is extremely far away from what their presence is being used to justify, which is essentially the dismantling and rewriting of western civilization. i guarantee out of the 15 to 26 million people who protested last year less than 1% feel like we need to decolonize our curriculum and start teaching the inherent evil of the white race. a great deal of them probably just wanted to leave the house (who remembers all the "protests" like surfing for george floyd and BBQ for george floyd). what's going on now is manufactured consent at its highest level.

most minorities are also grillpilled on the subject of race and the extent of how much they care is limited to having a vaguely negative opinion towards the police and also thinking racism bad. they definitely did not consent to any of this. it's unfortunate that the most radical voices in the room, who also happen to be the vast minority, are the ones who have gotten a foothold in the corporate world and our institutions. they're not gonna be doing any favors for the people they claim to be standing up for. if this heads in any one direction it will be minorities being much more antagonized than they have been in decades because of the insistence that they are put on a pedestal while white people are taught to hate themselves and the people who built their country. one can only hope the grillpill wins at the end of the day, but things will have to get much worse before they can get better.

Interesting, now they’re going after *musical* language, it’s always about controlling language with these people. Dismantling spoken language results in communication no longer being accomplished. Dismantling musical notation results in that music no longer existing, except in the memory of performers who have learned it already.

So much dismantling with nothing intended to fill gaps and prop up foundations when it’s destroyed.
Like I said before the outcome of this woke stuff achieves the same outcome as someone advocating for the unbombers manifesto. Except this woke shit takes extra steps to get to the same end goal

Classical music is heavily studied and appreciated for a reason. And while the jazz age is actually really cool I can imagine they are thinking more along the lines of "highlight crappy Soundcloud artist because diversity". It's also a different branch of musical study and should be separate. Don't force people studying Bach to also study early 20th century African American music because muh colonialism. People are paying good money for the classes they want. Not the ones you want to shoehorn in to make people's fee fees better.

Imagine a future where kids graduate being well versed in the classics: Beyonce and Notorius BIG. (:_(

Soundcloud rapper #5867 is a highly regarded figure in musical history and is now mandatory study for all students.

retards are also calling for affirmative action for orchestras because they're all white, and an end to blind auditions.

can they stop speaking in english because that's white supremacy too? go speak magumbo or whatever monkey talk
oh wait, they're still thinking in english, i'll volunteer to trepanate their skulls to make sure all the white supremacy leaks out

Blind auditions were introduced because they were worried that there was racial prejudice. Afterwards, the number of non-White musicians dropped. So I guess there was, just not what they were expecting.

How about this: Universities teach the subject they're paid to teach and don't try to turn every fucking subject into Critical Race Theory.

I'd love to see these fuckers tell Scott Joplin that he couldn't use musical notation because it was "Western". Fucker would have punched their lights out and played The Entertainer while using their bodies for a stool.

What if you simply want to learn about Bach?
No Bach, only Blach.

Nothing these people do will ever change the fact that Debussey, Wagner, Mozart, or a few dozen other European composers are not only remembered and reverred now, but will be for as long as humanity exists.

These people are like the mobs that burned pieces of art during the Bonfire of the Vanities, or books by the Nazis. They are talentless, worthless hacks who have contributed nothing, will contribute nothing, and be deservedly forgotten and mocked once they are gone.

This "decolonizing" shit is going to make China the next superpower.
China is already a superpower as far as Western classical music is concerned. BTW who goes to Oxford to read music?

Do you think wokeoids ever get tired?
Who will get tired of winning?

What if you simply want to learn about Bach?
If you are serious, you go to a conservatory and study under an expert like Ton Koopman. If you're casual you'll gain much simply by reading books and sleeve notes.

What grinds my gears is that musical notation is a result of renaissance era advances in mathematics. It's inherently a mathematical system and should exist free from cultural bias. Kind of like how wipipo adopted the Arabic numerical system because it was the best tool.

If it was rooted entirely in colonial whiteness I think it would be harder to denote music outside of western classical. As it stands, using the current musical system one can denote any kind of music, you can tune a piano to the Persian scale or write down a sitar melody.

Jazz is neat because it was darkies colonizing white music. They really helped show the flexibility of the system, I think.

Can we just get rid of music, education, science, and math altogether? Those are all colonial, white bullshit. Blacks don't want that shit. Latinos don't want it. Chinamen don't want it. Fucking white people again with their crummy notations and writing for their faggy, racist music.

There will be no level playing field until the world has been erased, and we are living in caves again. Then, we can start building civilization all over again, one brick at a time, and this time with no fucking musical notation.

I can only be grateful to be alive to see this new Enlightenment. Surely the new Renaissance is only around the corner (does the renaissance count as white if it was mostly Italians?)

These people won't be happy until we're banging on drums, screaming booga booga and handing out degrees in music for doing so. I hope all these universities go broke like the one in WA.

Evergreen? Failure was written all over that place, quite literally in hindsight lol.

Outside of boogie half mixed black kids and middle age whitey trying to look hip, I can guaranteed you that no actual modern black people actually listen to Jazz.
Old and middle age black guys are the best jazz players. There's a little place near me I used to visit before covid hit that had weekly jazz shows and every single bebop band was composed of 3 black dads and 1 white dad without fail. Of course, there were rarely any black people in the audience at these shows.

They're not going far enough. We need to not only get rid of all that stuff on the pages and those old dead white men songs, not only get rap and jazz into classical music schools - of course with a little pop because monay monay monay monay MONAY - we also need to focus more on feminist music! And maybe beat/slam poetry. That'll give real value to an Oxford degree.
