I'm pretty sure that's why most bother to use 'they' as a pronoun: you dodge the 'DID YOU ASSUME MY GENDER' nonsense and can wait until either someone clarifies things or keep a conversation rolling with little issue. Anyone that spergs out over it that much is either being an attention whore on their gender identity or trying to be the ACKUALLY guy, both are assholes either way.

Gay guys are generally very picky about who they associate with.
