I think he's on to something more than just movies. I think this same idea applies on a societal scale. In order to "matter", you have to be "special" and different from the people around you.
You can't be "cis" because cis is normal and if you are normal then you don't matter.
You can't have a fetish, because normal people have fetishes, you have to have a special spiritual aspect that sets you apart from others.
