It's no secret that Hogwarts Legacy is one of the most hotly-anticipated games currently in development. The upcoming Harry Potter RPG has a great deal of hype behind it as one of the first true triple-A games set in the Wizarding World, though it's now found itself in the center of controversy. Hogwarts Legacy lead designer Troy Leavitt is facing criticism for videos he uploaded to YouTube in the past.

Leavitt's YouTube channel was pointed out by Twitter user Liam Robertson, who is known for collaborating with Did You Know Gaming. Robertson described Leavitt as a "far right YouTuber" who made "anti-fem and pro GG vids." GG in this instance is in reference to the Gamergate controversy, which included a harassment campaign targeted primarily at Zoe Quinn, Brianna Wu, and Anita Sarkeesian.

Many of Leavitt's videos are indeed about Gamergate and feminism in video games. In the video "Gamergate - Thoughts of a developer," Leavitt outright states, "I would say that I'm generally supportive of Gamergate as I understand it." He also said that the way Gamergate "blew up" was "way overdue." He also made a video entitled "In Defense of John Lasseter" the former Disney executive who departed from the company after being accused of sexual misconduct.

Leavitt is not hiding his controversial YouTube videos. In fact, he has a direct link to his YouTube channel on his Twitter page. However, Leavitt's YouTube channel was not widely known, sitting at 25.6 thousand subscribers. Some of the videos did manage to perform rather well, with a video responding to Anita Sarkeesian's Feminist Frequency series earning over half a million views on the video hosting site, but that was prior to Leavitt serving as lead designer for such a high profile game. Robertson's tweet is gaining traction, and so it seems as though many more people will become aware of Leavitt's past videos.

This is far from the first time that someone involved with creating Harry Potter content came under fire for controversial statements. Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling has similarly been criticized for making controversial statements, to the point where some Hogwarts Legacydevelopers have said that her comments made them feel uncomfortable.

J.K. Rowling is not involved with Hogwarts Legacy's development, though, so this situation could have a more direct impact on how people view the game. It will be interesting to see how Leavitt responds, especially if it continues to draw more attention.

orange man is no longer president, stop talking about gamer gate
GG hysteria predates Orange Man. GamerGate is eternal.
They'll be whining about this shit when we're all in our 40's.

Let's make the dream come true.

The seed has been planted. Expect a bountiful harvest as we get closer to release. ResetEra tards were already frothing at the mouth because of JK Rowling, daily GG articles are going to be relevant for another two years minimum now that the lead dev is a confirmed time-travelling double life jewkiller

I'm not even into Harry Potter, but I hope this game is massively successful to spite troons and blue checks.

Love how this is cause for alarm and not anti-GG types continuing to support pedophiles like Sarah Nyberg.

Hmm...

Nothing about his skill, what he contributes to the team, how the team is doing under his leadership, or how he's performing.

Just "HE CRITICIZED SAINT ANITA AND DIDN'T BELIEVE A WHORE WITH SAGGY TITTIES!" screeching.

I can't wait for the sudden realization these people get that the Sniffy Joe and Camel Toe Administration doesn't have to signal boost them any more.

This is basically how they reacted to Kingdom Come's lead designer. The Last Night's lead dev also got this treatment. For the Kingdom Come guy, they even tried claiming he was far right because he liked Burzum. Even lefty metalheads are quick to say they love Burzum's early work and hate Varg as a person.

I happily will buy a game I have no interest in playing if the game pisses off the right people.

I don't even care if the game is shit. Even if it is shit, if playing the game pisses them off even more I even play it. Terrible games can be hilarious in the right circumstances. It's like watching an Ed Wood movie.

And that's where this article, or any article for that matter, loses me.

Twitter is the most toxic place on the internet and one of the least reliable sources for information or an unbiased opinion. I've know people, sensible people too, turning into total retards frothing at the mouth and hungry for the blood of whatever poor, unfortunate soul that's getting the daily "cancelled" treatment.

Much like McCarthyism and Watergate were being used as a battering ram to bash the right-wing looong after their time, GamerGate will continue being harped on well into the 2030s.

Dan Vavra didn't really make it easier on himself by doubling down though. Although I suppose it worked out for him, since now criticizing KC:D even slightly will get you an army of fanboys roasting your ass.
