Yeah, Justin Silverman has been talking about doing more chronlogically confused for a while in the Cinemassacre Truth subreddit. James didn't give a shit in this video. He had no interest in Dragon Quest before doing the work for this video and you can tell. It just comes off as him reading off a Dragon Quest wiki.
 
Clearly an advert for the new mobile game.

Video's not too bad though, though it doesn't even sound that chronologically confusing.

The reason isn't that it's hip to trash James, but that it has become easier to see than ever than James Rolfe stopped caring. He has no passion for AVGN, and he has little passion for anything else except his band, kids, and his autobiography. It was easy to see with the sponosorship videos for Transformers and GI Joe for instance, that Cinemassacre is only being run to bring in as much money as possible without caring that much about quality. People are frustrated with the current state of Cinemassacre and people thought maybe things would change with that AMA Justin Silverman did for The Cinemassacre Truth Subreddit. At the end of the day, It's clear that AMA was full of shit and was only done to damage control for Cinemasssacre's, Screenwave's and James Rolfe's reputation.

Because in a way, AVGN could be better, James should have done better. There are so many ways to approach talking about DQ, but they did it in the most laziest way possible.

Cinemassacre is like Classic Game Room. Its obvious that Mark didn't care about games, but became famous because he used to make the Game Room video game reviews with Dave.

He uploaded the old videos he made with Dave on youtube and gained money and popularity that way and started to do Classic Game Room HD full time on youtube.

With his popularity and money from youtube he spent that money on a huge warehouse to store games and spend on fruitless endeavors and tried to shift away from video game reviews.

And because of Adpocalypse, his youtube money dwindled. and it spiraled to more lazy reviews which in turn spiraled to lower ad revenue. Nowadays, he just do low effort comic reviews, and sold all the donated games he received from fans.

Cinemassacre is almost like Classic Game Room right now, but the only thing propping up James right now is Screenwave. if it wasn't for Mike egging him to upload his ANN videos on youtube, he will be working with that video editing company.

James has to do a lot of introspection. Because he is having illusions of grandeur. He has no talent in acting/directing, his knowledge and skill in directing is surface level or what they teach in school. He calls his shitty kid videos he shot as "films" (what a pretentious twat). He turned down an acting gig for the horror movie V/H/S. He's not as accomplished or famous as Pewdiepie, yet he is already writing an autobiography. He is having a midlife crisis and starting a band.
 
I agree with what most of you guys are saying here. I suppose I was speaking more about the recent anti-James rhetoric on the subreddit.
Some of what they say is plainly butthurt revisionist history. "James was never any good. He was just in the right place at the right time. What a hack."

If he used to make videos that you enjoyed and made you laugh, then he cannot be talentless. He was doing something right.
I'm just as disappointed in him these days as everyone else, but I'm going to give him credit for his past accomplishments.

You had me at the part where you said its like CGR. You lost me at "no talent in ating/directing". The acting i can semi-get (James was in this commerical:
) but the directing is hit or miss in my opinion.
 
Good so it wasn't just me who saw the Dragón Quest video and thought he was just doing it for the ad revenue.

I mean when he admitted right off the bat that he never really played it, that really set the tone for everything. And anything related to dragon quest shouldn't be soulless, but that whole video was.

he's been doing this 17 years now? the well has run dry. james has always been open that he got out of "new" games when he got into college around 2000 or so. you cant force the guy to care about shit he doesnt care about.

Considering there's shit like the ZX spectrum, Magnavox Odyssey 2, and load of pre-nintendo console weirdness like 50/50 games that were half video game and half board game. There's still shit that he could cover, especially on the technical side of things.

Also there's a fuckload of loose ends when it comes to lost media.

There's a mountain of dead table top franchises that are not Warhammer and D&D. Also all the dead pokemon clone series and toys.

You know like that one time he got the creator of Toxic Avenger on his show? He could put some more effort in to do weird niche shit like that. Hell John tron did a thanksgiving video for funsies and that had nothing to do with games and was a big elaborate joke.

Also there's Gog with all it's old ass PC games. If he ever played Ultima 1-3 you then suddenly understand why the fuck Zelda 2 is the way it is.

One positive is that James' hair is growing back, but that's probably because he ate dead fetuses like Christopher Reeve did in order to give him youth.

I was rewatching some of his old monster madness vids and it's a shame that he's heading towards massive burnout maybe it'd be better for James to just move on from cinemassacre at this point but idk if he can still find a decent job or if he's stuck where all he can do is vids now because he hasn't been "employed" for so long, honestly I think james if he ever does get out would make an awesome film history professsor

If he's self-employed I'm sure could put that history on his CV. Either way, I agree: He's a great speaker even if creatively he's a bit one-note.
 
James wasn't really that much into video games as you thought he would, the only reason he would keep on going at the time was that it was these Angry Nintendo Nerd/Angry Video Game Nerd videos became so popular that it got him revenue to the point it started his partnership with ScrewAttack. Back then you kept on hearing stuff like James was more of a movie nerd than a video game nerd, and the first "Chronologically Confused" episode and the well-critiqued "TMNT 3" movie review episode (it was so good that even Doug Walker doesn't want to review more of it because he thinks James has already talked more than enough of it) proved it.

Even then, there's still actually some very good modern AVGN episodes (the Power Rangers one imo is actually one of the best ones James has ever done as a whole) and if you rewatch his old episodes you can see that James does have much more games to talk about (e.g. Cool Spot, maybe Double Dragon III Revisited, etc.), heck in his "Back to the Future Revisited" video he even said that he has so many games to cover while showing his entire gaming library.

So what is the problem? James mentioned his burnout before around the Action 52 review and you can see in some of his episodes where it shows about AVGN retiring (e.g. Megaman episode). Some argued that the AVGN movie would be a good point for James to finally retire the Nerd persona and to get more into movie making which was his huge dream, but as we all knew, it flopped and was considered mostly negatively received apart from AVGN fanboys keeping on saying it's a decent movie just to spite Irate Gamer and anyone else who criticises AVGN but that's another story. (Also funnily enough seeing his crowdfunding page, it seems some didn't even receive the rewards at all but still, another story for another day)

It's clear that James keeps on churning these new videos constantly to make money, which of course you would say "Well duh, that's what YouTubers do all the time", but imagine doing that as a full-time job where your videos which were famous for swearing got demonetized (which would explain why his "You know what's bullshit" videos were now "You know what's BS") and you had to go to new branches to try something new and try to get new audiences similar to Game Grumps, because I think this is what James is doing with these movies and new band and more. Gone were the days where you make videos for passion while still having partnerships, and now you have to make videos regardless of quality just for bucks and sponsors.

I think the recent Simpsons episode sums it up perfectly--he can still make laughs every now and then but it just isn't the same as it was back in the day and it's obvious he's doing it for the brand name and the money rather than any sense of passion.

Youtube is big business these days. He puts "Cinemassacre" on his resume and shows the millions upon millions of views he gets and I'm sure he'd easily be able to find a job. My guess is James wants to preserve his self-employed status instead of doing something like making corporate training videos (which he's obviously qualified to do). Personally my hope is that he'd retire AVGN with a decent episode but every now and then (no more than once a year) bring him back for a special.

In any case I think by 2024 he'll put out his last episode since that's the 20th anniversary (!) of the Simon's Quest episode. Could be before, but probably not after 2024.
