I usually try to find something nice in a piece. That one thing I genuinely like, even if it's just "Well, you tried."

It's absolutely manipulative in the least. You run into this from time to time, motherfuckers trying to guilt you into drawing something they want. The only way to handle it is with a brusque "no" and sailing on.
