More than a third of New York City’s young people in foster care identify as LGBTQ+. A recent report published by the Administration for Children’s Services, the city’s welfare agency, reveals this cohort is more likely to experience homelessness than their counterparts.
The New York Times writes “While some children are placed into foster care because of abuse, neglect or poverty, many LGBTQ teens enter the system after families reject them.” The language points to a causal relationship between homelessness and a parent’s reaction to a child’s choices.
But the A=B in this formula may be disingenuous to some parents struggling to parent LGBTQ+ kids. Teenagers may not become homeless because parents have rejected them—some may decide to leave their homes because they have rejected their parents.
The generally accepted narrative among activists, the therapeutic community, and the media is that many trans kids are living with parents who reject them based on morality or intolerance. However, there may be some parents who themselves are being rejected because they have not quickly or strongly supported their tween or teen through appearance and name changes, hormone-treatment, and, in some cases, life-altering surgeries.
Parents who detected signs of gender dysphoria in their very young or prepubescent children might feel more comfortable in accepting that their child really has been disordered for a long time. But a different cohort—those grappling with a sudden “coming out” as trans at 13, 14, or even through their 20s—may be skeptical. That skepticism guided a study done by researcher Dr. Lisa Littman, who surveyed the parents of a group of teenage girls who had recently come out as trans. Littman’s ground-breaking but controversial research focused on feedback from parents who largely believed that their daughter's decision to become “trans” came out of nowhere or appeared to be related to social contagion within a friend group. Littman coined the term “Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria” to describe this phenomenon. Her findings may be threatening to those who believe any person who declares themselves as trans should be affirmed as such and should have access to any medical care to achieve transition.
This may often be the critical junction where tension escalates between “trans” children and parents. While some skeptical parents can support, or at least participate in pronoun changes, short haircuts, new manners of dress, and name changing, medical intervention can raise the bar for some. Many trans tweens and teens—who are not old enough to vote, drink legally, or marry—are, with the help of the therapeutic and medical community, starting on hormone treatment or considering double mastectomies, which parents may find difficult to accept.
In today’s culture, some children may spend more time with TikTok, Reddit, and Instagram than they do with their parents. They were raised in a world in which every question can be answered on Google. If they’re looking for role models, social media influencers are there to cheerfully guide any journey. This may be particularly true for children who believe that they may be trans. It’s a strong suction, the internet, one that parents may struggle to compete with.
Amid this pull, parents may be experiencing something like parenting dysphoria, as they fight to preserve their relationships with children who may hear from other sources that their parents are the toxic ones. Parents who tell their trans declared children that they are worried about them, that they don’t think they should make life-altering decisions, that they’re young and they should explore slowly may experience pushback or rejection from their child in return.
Parents may also find that some therapists are not on their side. There is much testimony among parents of trans kids who have been told by therapists that lack of support for these children is the same as harming them.
Ultimately, particularly as children enter their mid teens, they may become more emboldened to leave behind families and disconnect from parents—parents who, in some cases, have wanted nothing more than to make their children happy and whole. I couldn't find a murderer Joel Guy Jr thread/post to ask this query, but here seems a good place.
Watching some of the trial coverage (where everyone but witnesses on the stand are wearing masks), Joel conveniently was sporting a clear visor instead.
And I couldn't help notice he has that typical troon smug smile.
So I am wondering how long before he declares himself a Tru and Honest wammin.
He just got 2 life sentences, so will have plenty of time to consider it.
This 28 year old NEVER WORKED, was a perpetual college student and his mother worked a job just to provide him with funds, is obviously on the spectrum.
He did not hang out IRL or online with his family, had few friends, and even had a roommate who said he would go weeks never seeing Joel while he stayed in his room.
Looks a little Yaniv-y here, with his parents he later killed, dismembered and tried to dissolve.

Psychoanalysts used to say that this type of person had some sort of early childhood trauma that caused them to dissociate from their opposite-sex element. So in the case of a macho AGP, they would have suppressed their anima to the point of dissociation. The result being a stunted "secondary female self" that exists completely separate from the primary personality and which asserts itself when the primary identity hits a wall (midlife crisis AGPs follow this trend). The emotional stunting from all this suppression also would explain why this secondary self always exhibits behaviors of a much younger person of the opposite sex.
Personally, I just think they're pervs who want to fuck teenagers.

He will absolutely troon out for secondary gain. He's already tried to game the system at least twice so he can remain single celled; if he goes full troon and then claims safety concerns they'll keep him in seg until they can determine if he's actually in danger or not.

A 14-year-old transgender boy is starting legal proceedings against NHS England over delays to gender reassignment treatment.
The teenager has waited over a year for referral to the only NHS gender clinic for children and adolescents.
The Good Law Project, which is acting for the teenager, says the NHS has a legal obligation to provide specialist care to all patients within 18 weeks, or provide an alternative.
NHS England says a review is under way.
It announced the independent review into gender identity services for young people in September. An NHS England spokesperson said this would include "how and when children and young people were referred to specialist services".
There have been previous reports of trans young people experiencing "hugely distressing" waits for treatment at the gender-identity development service (GIDS) run by the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust.
But others believe the clinic is too quick to offer gender transition treatment to teenagers.

But he says he had no choice because "nobody else is sticking up for trans young people".
Reece first came out as a trans boy in primary school. His family, friends and teachers were all supportive of him transitioning.
Since moving to secondary school, everyone has always known him as a boy, only referring to his new name and he/him pronouns.
However, Reece says he was able to access help with his transition only through expensive private healthcare. He spoke to his GP about a referral to GIDS in October 2019, but he is yet to hear anything from an NHS specialist.
He says he is aware of others awaiting gender reassignment treatment.
"I know more than 30 trans people, from school and LGBT groups. Everybody's been waiting for months, or even years, but nobody's been able to get in yet.
"It's scary because it shows the service isn't available to the people who need it."
'Deeply concerned'
The Tavistock is currently booking appointments for people who have been waiting for an initial session since September 2017.However, a Freedom of Information (FOI) request made by the BBC has revealed that, since 2017, over 10,000 more young people have been referred to the already over-subscribed service.
This problem pre-dates the coronavirus pandemic.
Waiting times, the number of referrals, and the treatment given, are all being investigated by an independent review.
Bev Jackson, from the LGB Alliance, a self-funded lobby group, said: "We don't think children should be allowed to self-diagnose any medical condition.
"The numbers of referrals are so huge that I believe this is a social problem caused by miseducation. It is impossible for the NHS to deal with all of these young people who are coming forward.
"We need to take a step back and ask why are so many young people presenting at the clinic for a gender treatment?"
One psychotherapist, who wanted to remain anonymous, said she believed the long waiting times could be "a positive".
"Having to wait a few years for initial treatment may benefit some young people who question their gender, as they will become more mature and more knowledgeable about their identity."
However, Reece disagrees, saying this view "really frustrates" him.
"The solution to working out if a person is trans or not, is not to leave them on their own in a bad situation. If a person isn't actually trans, they won't realise that without professional support. That's why the different stages exist."
'Right to treatment'
Jolyon Maugham, director of the Good Law Project, who is representing the teenager, said: "NHS England has a statutory duty to ensure that patients referred by their GP to a gender identity development service are seen within 18 weeks."

"This is not happening, and as a result, we believe the law shows they should be providing alternative care to anyone on the waiting list. That could include private and overseas healthcare.
"Whilst the young people are waiting, puberty passes and transitioning becomes a lot harder - some people are effectively denied treatment.
"The NHS needs to make a cultural decision that trans people are real, and they have the same rights to treatment as everybody else."
An NHS England spokesperson said: "There has been more than a 500% rise in the number of children and young people being referred to the Tavistock's gender identity service since 2013 as more people come forward for support and treatment.
"The NHS has already asked Dr Hilary Cass to carry out an independent review including how and when children and young people are referred to specialist services, so legal action against the NHS will only cost taxpayers' money and not help the actions already under way."
