CBS reality shows must now have 50% non-White casts, network says

CBS’ slate of reality shows, which include “Survivor,” “Big Brother” and “Love Island,” will become more diverse in 2021.

On Monday, the network introduced an initiative that requires these shows to ensure that 50% of their casts are Black, Indigenous or People of Color, or BIPOC. Additionally, the network has committed to putting at least 25% of its development budget towards creators and producers who are BIPOC.

These reality TV targets will kick off during the 2021-22 broadcast season.

“The reality TV genre is an area that’s especially underrepresented, and needs to be more inclusive across development, casting, production and all phases of storytelling,” George Cheeks, president and CEO for the CBS Entertainment Group, said in a statement.

This initiative follows targets that CBS set for its scripted programs earlier this year as well as a deal to create programming with the NAACP.

CBS has also mandated that its writers’ rooms must be staffed with a minimum of 40% BIPOC representation with the goal of increasing that number to 50% in the 2022-23 season.

I have a progressive idea here that I'd like to sell.

Stick twenty sheboon skanks in a big fucking house, hide cameras everywhere, and tell them 'a winner' will be determined in six months time, without explaining how.

After that, all we'd need do is sit back with some popcorn and enjoy the chaos.

Does anyone even care about reality TV anymore? If this was in the 2000's or even the early 2010's, it'd be a shocking thing but reality TV more or less died when Jersey Shore and Honey Boo Boo did.

The only channel that seems to still be coasting off it would be History Channel, which markets their reality shows at mostly white Boomers in rural and suburban locales.

If this ends up killing reality TV as we know it then by all means!
i think it will just make reality show contestants lie about their genetic background. The types of people who want to be on these shows aren't very honest generally.

I'm always intrigued when massive, multi billion dollar entities like this make decisions that are so racist and hyper-progressive that Twitter of all places takes them to task for it. It's like hating blacks so much that the grand wizard of the KKK says "whoa man, aren't you being a little unfair?".

The question that inevitably arises is whether or not they're actually more racist than Twitter. I'm inclined to say no simply because I don't think it's possible to hate white people more than Twitter does, but I don't know. There's a lot of evidence to suggest that the average media CEO would have a week long orgasm if whites went extinct.

The other option is that their algorithms have correctly identified certain minorites as champion consoomers so their computer is saying "pander to these groups and you'll get more money", and instead of thinking critically for half a second they blindly obey the all-powerful machine and end up looking like genocidal lunatics.

Nobody shows their best side on reality TV, and if they do its edited out or made to look like their worst. I feel like having more minorities on reality TV shows is not actually a step forward for race relations, and I wonder if CBS is trolling.

I can't even remember the last time I sat down to watch TV, and I don't think I've even been into reality TV. Most of it comes off as scripted as fuck, and people who are fanatics of shows like big brother and survivor and insufferable douche-ends.

Hell, I forgot Survivor and Big Brother were even still on the air. They were really big around 2000-2001 but I always figured they crashed and burned around 2004 or somewhere close to that.

What about representation in the writers room, casting, department heads, etc... because last I checked it’s a bunch of (((fellow whites))) running that shit.

I have a bad habit of getting upset at things that don't really effect me but even I can't raise the shits to give about Survivor or Big Brother being more brown. Who even watches those?

Wasn’t that Flava of Love?

Reality TV is faker than professional wrestling.
Sperg moment, but I really hate people saying professional wrestling is fake.

If you want to call it scripted or choreographed or pre-arranged, then sure. But those guys are out there doing real physical work and getting hit with actual objects and it actually hurts. Whatever you think of pro wrestling (poor mostly) and its fans (fuck smarks) or whatever, the wrestlers themselves do a hell of a lot of work and they deserve credit for it.
