Knives aren't really equalisers in the way that guns are because having extra reach and strength helps with close combat weapons. They're better than nothing, but it's nothing like owning a gun.
Because if you can defend yourself with pepper spray.. why not guns? They don't want that slippery slope.

The intimidation factor is probably the best reason to have a knife if you can't get a gun or pepper spray. The sight of a blade being held in defense (or offense) turns the gears of the human mind and triggers the fight or flight response. Now, for the more determined attackers or the armed, they'll go for a fight. For those without, it's likely they'll slink off because getting stabbed/slashed isn't worth whatever they have planned for the woman in question.
Gotta make sure the peons can't defend themselves as much as possible. Right of self defense? Think about the poor poor suspect though? Why won't anyone think of the guy assaulting people with a knife; he shouldn't be subjected to the horror of pepper spray. No no, he should be arrested and given a slap on the wrist; that'll teach him right from wrong!

Police exists (in a benign state, anyway) to enact criminal justice and to assist in crises, not to prevent crime. These morons think otherwise.

Probably, but even France and Germany have pepper spray, and you definitely can't CCW there unless you have very special connections (or are an off duty cop).
Handguns have been banned on the British mainland since the 1990s. Northern Ireland actually does have CCW because of terror threats from the IRA, but you have to be in serious danger to get one.
This is just because Americans don't think people from Spain and Portugal are real Europeans for some reason. Of course they can be white nationalists, look at Franco and Salazar.
I mean, you can have a gun but the requirements to get one are incredibly hard and you are, by law, restricted from using them for anything except hunting. When you have them at home, you need to keep ammo and the weapons separated and in the case you shoot some home invader with one, you will be charged for it.
People that go with this logic go with the "You got colonized by arabs for 600 years, so you cannot be white" argument. I don't lose my time with that shit. You could also argue that Russians are not white because how they got taken over by Mongolians for centuries or that Indians are white because they got colonized by the Brits. Portugal went bankrupt fighting the endless colonial war and still had illiterate people into the 1970s. Salazar was a pretty terrible leader and left Portugal in a bad state. A better dictator would have just let the useless colonies go and focused on improving Portugal's infrastructure and literacy. Franco was better since he didn't get bogged down in endless colonial wars and bankrupt the country, but he still seized power in a coup and killed thousands of his political opponents. He's not very fondly remembered in Spain and the removal of statues reflects that; it's not like people trying to pull down statues of national heroes like Jefferson in the USA.
This is a 50/50 thing in Spain, i assure you. In the last years many people have been saying "With Franco we lived better" unironically. I will say that Franco wasn't good, but the alternative was even worse, because the commies would have done the same he did. Plus, after WW2 was over he got showered with money and aid from the US, which made his economical miracle possible. I still remember when my grandma told me about how people got powdered milk leftovers from the Korean war, which tasted horrible. Now the people that talk about him either joke around, are commies that think that fascism is everywhere and neo nazi hicks. The average joe talks about Franco like a bad memory.
Relative to being puppeted by the USSR like an eastern bloc state I agree, but without the civil war breaking out after the failed coup in 1936 the Soviets wouldn't have been able to infiltrate the republic so effectively. Spain is a long way from the USSR and their ability to exercise control over it would have been very limited (and indeed proved to be very limited, since they lost the war). Being in the western half of Europe, falling into the American orbit and getting their economic aid was fairly inevitable.
They got to Cuba and south america, they would have gotten to Spain.
