I'm keeping an eye out on alternative schooling options for my future children, I prefer to at least homeschool them for the primary years if anything but to hone their bullshit detectors for what is to come. I am a fan of online schooling and I have several that I went to for supplementing my eduction. Forgive the spam but here are a few that I used: khan academy, codecademy, opencourseware, udemy, teex, acm learning center, etc.
The knowledge is there, but I think one of the problems is there is too much information out there that for the sake of our sanity we need to filter things out. The human mind can only handle so much information, which is why developing critical thinking skills is important. We get information from TV, advertisements, internet, advertisements, friends, family, billboards, advertisements, movies, magazines, advertisements, forums, advertisements, spam, speeches, teachers, and advertisements.
People are presented with information but are not being armed with the necessary skills to parse through the information to decipher the difference between what is true, false, misleading, non-factual, and factual. I do make the distinction between what is truthful and what is factual, because someone may say something they genuinely believe is the truth (factual) does not make it factual since as humans we live a life filtered through our own perception.
People are being overflooded with information to the point where they only focus on what they need to get by in their daily lives. Life is complicated and there is so much people need remember and get done just to get by. Appointments, work, family, school/training, social obligations, bills, and when they turn on the news they are presented with bad news. I don't think people are necessarily stupider, just busier and more mentally exhausted. I think people need to refine their bullshit detectors a lot more and oversaturated with information.
