Anyone watch anime with dark, gnostic themes. I don't like too much anime, and if I am going to watch something it has to be dark and psychological with gnostic themes. My favorite.
1. Ergo Proxy
2. Gilgamesh
3. Boogiepop phantom (original adaptation)
4. Serial experiment Lain
5. Paranoia Agent

The weirder the better. I noticed this genre seems pretty niche.

I like me some dark tragedy sometimes

1. World end. Holy shit. Goes from cute and happy to sad and dark.
2. Charlotte/Angel Beats/Brynhldr into darkness is right up there with you. Especially Brynhldr.
melting girls
3. Butcher's work.

This is the scene that would define popular action anime for a generation and possibly generations to come. The origin of so many tropes we know and love. Though this anime never saw proper popularity here in the states, in Japan it set the standard for what action anime should be and would become. Probably my favorite anime ever. Certainly not the best, but my favorite.

I keep forgetting even in the tween years of digital animation that there were still some damn good animated sequences to be had. That would've blown my mind back in the day had I seen s-CRY-ed.

Really should watch s-CRY-ed.

I forget that there were two different versions of Eureka Seven.

Still a good anime, at the end of the day.

God I love hot-blooded action when it's done right, one of the reasons I hold the mecha genre so dear. It's even better when you like both sides in the fight or it's a fight that follows that age old trope of both sides taking increasing levels of damage until all they have left is their fists.

Here's a new manga recommendation, Supernova Before the Kiss by Nametake.

It's a supernatural high school love story that is in some ways similar to The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.

Fumi Munetsugu, a high school girl who is admired by everyone, falls in love with Toki, a new transfer student.

Toki is actually a scientist from the year 2435 who sends himself back in time to keep Fumi from manifesting her subconscious power to destroy the world anytime she gets upset.

It has some superficial similarities to "Endless Eight" in that it involves time loops although one major difference is that the start point for each loop moves forward each time Toki successfully manages to placate Fumi. Also, unlike Kyon, Toki retains his memories of the previous loop each time he travels back in time.

Minor side note, Fumi's design reminds me a fair bit of Nobue Itou from Ichigo Mashimaro/Strawberry Marshmallow if Nobue was drawn in a somewhat different art style and Fumi's older sister Ichika has a similar jaded demeanor to Nobue and also smokes, like Nobue. Might as well take up smoking if you've seen your sister destroy the world in many different time loops.

Oh the show is beautiful. Almost every scene is a unique or weird angle, and they love doing short tracking shots.

So I saw the 3rd episode of the 5th Tenchi Muyo OVA, they go to an island, basically nothing much, a bit of fan service, but there is some foreshadowing for War on Geminar since Tenchi's half brother is with them, there is a scene where Tenchi is teaching him to catch some mushrooms and some training in the woods, some ninja hops and stuff, something we would see him do in Geminar. But there is one serviceable moment Tenchi has with Ryoko where they are talking alone at the shore at night, basically reminiscing when Ryoko first went to Earth, but of course Ayeka interrupts. But after that:

Tenchi 5th OVA 1.jpg
Tenchi 5th OVA 2.jpg
Tenchi 5th OVA 3.jpg
Tenchi 5th OVA 4.jpg
Tenchi 5th OVA 5.jpg
Tenchi 5th OVA 6.jpg
Tenchi 5th OVA 7.jpg

Just what is he hinting at? What is this selfish wish? He said he was envious of Seina, what is he envious of Seina? There was scene at the beginning where they were fighting some space pirates, is he envious of Seina's ability to catch them? Or is it this?

I consider it one of my top 3 animes along with Trigun and Spice & Wolf, so there's three recommendations for you.
I forgot to include it but we did just recently rewatch Trigun! It's one of my all-time favorites as well.
I feel like I missed the heyday of spice & wolf, but I always liked the foxgirl character design and it's typical for me to watch anime series years after everyone has moved on.. I'll check it out.

Maybe try out Mob Psycho, same author as One Punch Man. Both seasons of Mob were made with a bunch of love from Bones. I'd also recommend Priconne, by the same director that did Konosuba, lots of light hearted humor that gave me a similar feel to Bofuri.
These both look great, thank you!

Obscure manga feels a bit too easy but whatever.

Just listing off stuff I've rarely seen/heard anyone bring up.

-Level E by Togashi (done in between Yu Yu and HxH) starts off slow but after it fully embraces the comedy aspect past the first couple chapters I really enjoyed it. Only like 15 chapters or so IIRC. Definitely not on the level of his big two but still underappreciated.
-One Outs which I've brought up before is fantastic, even if you're not big into baseball or sports. Takes on the Eyeshield 21 format of having games be insane chess battles rather than just coin flips (like most baseball games) and the final arc against the hated rival is one of my favorites (the epilogue AS game flashback is fucking fantastic too) intentionally getting blown the absolute fuck out just to completely ruin the other team's batting stances is FUCKING 70D CHESS. Only real downside is the manga was never fully translated so you'll need to fill in the blanks with the anime, which like ES21 ends before the best parts.
-Baketeriya is a personal like I've never seen anyone else talk about before about a guy who finds himself having to deal with a bunch of Youkai from out of nowhere with a pretty fucking depressing final chapter.
-Zerozaki Soushiki is based on a LN series and stars a girl suddenly targeted by assassins who gets rescued by an older guy who claims she's their assassin family's little sister and shit goes completely off the fucking rails and it's fucking fantastic.
-Zetman is a dark superhero manga that ends on a giant motherfucking cliffhanger that will never, ever get resolved but still well worth the read.
-Duds Hunt is a oneshot about a bunch of people Battle Royale'ing featuring a wonderfully pleasant short story afterwards about a girl killing and chopping up her new dad after his sexual assault spawns multiple personality disorder.
-Getenrou is an insane one volume manga by the Soredemo author.

and so on and so on

I decided to watch the new Digimon movie. It looked awful after seeing all the spoilers but I decided to give it a chance.
It was still awful. The whole “you have to grow up” message was a subtle as a sledgehammer to the face, the special Agumon and Gabumon forms are total ass pulls (and ugly too,) and the villain was a copy pasted Maki from Tri. Also the 02 ending is still canon which kills all the emotional impact of the movie. Apparently the original director of Adventure was involved but walked out due to disagreements about the plot.

Everything I'd heard about Tri had made me stay away from it, just looked like a series made so they could cash in on nostalgia. All I've seen about the new movie is that it's supposed to act as a final conclusion and leave room for a fresh digimon reboot? I'm not really sure what is meant by that since most digimon series seem pretty self contained anyway or is it more "Please let us not have to write anymore about Adventure 01" final conclusion? Only thing I like is that they seemed to have tried to get as much of the original cast as possible, very glad to see Tai and Izzy's VAs among those coming back.

I've largely kept away from anything Digimon related for a bit since I'm worried it'd spoil my fond memories of the series watching it religiously growing up. It's kind of silly, but I'd hate to rewatch stuff like Adventure 01 and 02 only to realize it doesn't live up to my childhood adoration of the series. I remember when they first started releasing the early seasons on to DVD as dub only I passed on picking them up because I can't imagine that the dub aged very well, especially Adventure 01, and I have fond memories of that dub. Maybe I'll eventually rewatch the series sub only so I don't have to connect it mentally with the version I grew up watching.

You'll be fine, especially when you compare it to other dubs of the time period and realize how much Saban actually got away with the dub and how mature it still remained. I've had that doubting thought at one point thanks to the Digimon fandom on Tumblr always shitting on the dub, but even though I had seen the Filipino dub (I haven't been able to sit through the sub for some reason, Tri was the first I did that for the Adventure series, and fuck) and therefore know the original script, something about the dub just works with me despite the awkwardness of the first several episodes. Also, it makes the purists shit themselves in rage when you admit to being a dub fan, so that's always fun. *points to username smugly*

Also speaking of the DVD releases, I'm honestly disappointed that they couldn't get the masters directly from Saban/Disney. Sometimes, the rating bug is still in the footage, which is always hilarious when I see it (but that's just me), so that is why it is a subbed release may never be possible. But I dunno, based on what I've heard about the Japanese BDs, Digimon has had a hard time with high-def encoding looking good. Toei kinda sucks when it comes to taking good care of their masters, but Digimon in particular got bum-rushed when it came to that.

But now I haven't seen Data Squad as-is. I watched it subbed as Savers and that was a rough sit for me, and I don't know how I could handle the dub tbh, even though Yoshino is voiced by Sora's voice-actress and therefore would be infinitely better than the sub.

You might also like Demon Slayer/Kimetsu no Yaiba if you like the shonen stuff with awesome fight sequences, choreography and effects.

Also, she's not a foxgirl, she's Holo the Wise Wolf, but she's adorable anyway, lol.

Digimon Tamers was always my favorite season, both in the story, the characters, and the Digimon. And it annoyed the hell out of me that they refused to air the majority of the second half of the series due to how dark it was.

I finished up Rahxephon and overall I'd say it's pretty good though it does get a bit convoluted at times with all the background scheming from various factions and their loving use of vague sounding explanations. Also, the amount of people they just killed off in the last couple episodes was kind of ridiculous and felt like a cheap way to try and show how serious the situation was, they needed to sprinkle them through the series rather than just dump them all at the end. Overall I'd give the series a 7/10 since it did have some very strong moments and I liked the cast for the most part.

Probably going to watch something a bit more easy to follow as a palate cleanser.

Also, some interesting information came out about Discotek's release of sayonara zetsubou sensei. Apparently they weren't given any japanese scripts for the show so they're going to have to sub it entirely by ear and anyone with a passing knowledge of the very Japanese humor of the series or the typical visual presentation of Shaft shows could guess how hard that's probably going to be for the translators. Almost feel like buying the eventual release out of sympathy.

I know people go into a blind rage when you mention any liking for the Digimon movie since it's a "butchering of much better movies" which is always amusing, same people also seem to hate the soundtrack. I never got the hatred for either. I'll probably eventually get around to picking up the dvd releases since I don't think they're too hard to find now, it's somewhat of a shame about the PQ problems, but sometimes having a meh release is better than not being able to do one at all. It's funny, Data Squad was when I stopped watching Digimon while it aired as my kid brain couldn't stand the idea of someone other than Tai having Agumon. No idea why they decided to go with Agumon even if they did try to change of his evolution forms, just make up a new digimon or at least a different colored Agumon to make it clear to the kid audience it's not the same Agumon (the little hand accessory was a poor attempt at that personally).
Are there any girls with guns action anime from the past decade
The only ones I can think of off the top of my head are the two air soft anime Sabagebu! and Stella C3-bu but I don't think those ones would really count as action anime. First one is more a comedy while the second is basically anime Spec ops: The Line in how the story progresses. If you don't mind from not the past decade than I'd recommend Gunsmith Cats short OVA series. Very similar feel to a good buddy cop movie.
