As the current season comes to a close (and I finished off the shows I was watching), I'll just drop my feelings about them here.

KanoKari: A way-too-high-quality adaptation of a decent romcom. As somebody who read the manga, I can't help but feel that there was too much effort put into it. It's not the most deserving of a good adaptation, for sure, but... I still really liked it? I still barely understand Mami's intentions, and Kazuya is still a dumb cuck, but it just has a certain pull despite the pathetic garbage that is the MC.
Uzaki-chan: A decent-to-subpar adaptation of a quality romcom. I quite like Uzaki-chan, so I was somewhat dissapointed by certain decisions with the anime's direction (a skippable tourism ad episode, for one). Thankfully, the voice actors and the character interactions really pull it together despite the "meh" animation.
No Guns Life (second cour): Good adaptation of a good series. I personally haven't read the manga for this one, but I'm gonna check it out for sure, considering the story and characters are really genuinely likeable and the aesthetic is something I just haven't seen anywhere else. It's kind of grunge-y and grime-y, something you don't see too often in cyberpunk works. Almost a Vietnam War-inspired future aesthetic.
Houkago Teibou Nisshi: Comfy fishing CGDCT. What else do I have to say, really? It's cute and fun, there's almost nothing to hate about it. Doga Kobo continues to knock these adaptations out of the park despite all the issues that the adapation went through given corona. Give it a watch on a weekend (but make sure you're not injecting all that moe in one go, be sure to take breaks!).
Appare-Ranman: For an anime original, it's above par, to say the least. I usually drop PA Works original series after 3 episodes given that they've mostly been kind bland, but the characters and simple "edgy Wacky Races" story really pulled me in. I'd say it's at least worth a try if you've got nothing better to watch, but other than that, it's nothing super memorable.

And of course, Re:Zero's second season is only halfway done, so I've no right to judge it at the moment. So far, though, they've actually done a suprisingly good job (aside from a couple of off-model shots).
Overall, pretty decent anime this season, although most of it was pretty bland in comparison with other, better seasons I've lived through. Next season at least seems to be promising, but I won't count my chickens before they hatch.

On a side note, I've been getting through my backlog slowly. Cardcaptor Sakura and Lovely Complex are both legitimately enjoyable shows and I'd highly reccomend them. (Though you might wanna take CCS at a slow pace since it's meant to be weekly.)

Oh my God I was taken aback by how much fun LoveCom was. I was skeptical about its high score on MAL. but I'm so glad I chose to watch it. I'm collecting the manga now, but apparently volumes 13, 15 and 16 are out-of-print or something according to Amazon and Ebay :/. Wish I took the entire lineup at Half-Price when I saw them. Bleh.

Anyone watch anime with dark, gnostic themes. I don't like too much anime, and if I am going to watch something it has to be dark and psychological with gnostic themes. My favorite.
1. Ergo Proxy
2. Gilgamesh
3. Boogiepop phantom (original adaptation)
4. Serial experiment Lain
5. Paranoia Agent

The weirder the better. I noticed this genre seems pretty niche.

I’m watching Ergo Proxy and currently finishing up Paranoia Agent, since just a couple of months ago I finished up watching all of Satoshi Kon’s films. Be sure to watch Texnolyze next, though. I heard it’s interesting.

Ergo Proxy is my favorite. I hate the fact that most good anime series are only limited to one season.

Anyone else have obscure anime series they think they're one of the only fans of?
I'm unsure what shows I'd consider obscure because I've kind of lost track on what would exactly fit that label anymore. My main interest field in anime is already Mecha, so series that I might find commonly watched by fellow mecha fans are probably not well known outside. If I'm to guess, I think that They were 11! would probably be the most obscure anime movie with something like Argento Soma being the most obscure early 2000s mecha labelled with the annoying "eva knock-off" that makes most people skip it. Maybe also Kuuchuu Buranko? It's probably the most out there show I've seen.

There's probably a bunch of series that people would count as obscure I've seen, I notice it the most the few times I've ventured onto r/anime's recommendation thread. Stuff that's fairly commonly talked about on /a/ or /m/ never get mentioned in favor for the same 10 series with their "obscure" pick just being a series that I wouldn't really consider to fit that.

I find that I really have to be in a certain state of mind to be able to sit down and enjoy those kinds of series, like it took me three different tries to sit through all of Texhnolyze. Its opening is still one of my favorites just for the feel it gives off.

I've been really interested in checking out Ergo Proxy and Lain but just haven't found myself in the mood yet. I don't know if they fully count but I also remember liking Sky Crawlers and Jin-Roh. Stuff like Casshern Sins dealt with themes similar but it disappointing took a noticeable drop in quality once it neared the end and tried to cram in story. Worked much better as an episodic series.

My boyfriend and I got really into Food Wars recently. We just finished up the last season, and as you guys warned, it was bad. I don't regret watching it, but what the hell. The show was nearly perfect up until then.

Any recommendations for what to watch next? We've most recently enjoyed Food Wars, Cautious Hero, Otome Game no Hametsu, Bofuri and One Punch Man, so definitely prefer things that have a light-hearted side and mainly prefer shonen but not always.

haikyuu is a fun series about volleyball.

Golden Boy.

But since we're coming up to October, watch Higurashi for your spoopy quota.

Ping Pong The Animation is a fantastic character-drama series that, despite its name, isn't really about Ping Pong,. I consider it one of my top 3 animes along with Trigun and Spice & Wolf, so there's three recommendations for you. Table tennis, a space-based spaghetti western. and medieval trading and economics with a wolf goddess (I'd also recommend the dub for all 3 of these, especially Ping Pong because it's really fucking well-done).

Golden Boy.
Holy shit, I forgot about that show, it was brilliant, just a guy on his bike exploring Japan.

Anyone else have obscure anime series they think they're one of the only fans of?

There's the 2003 series Dokkoida which I've never seen anyone talk about, but it's surprisingly great, just a pleasant, charmingly fun series.

There's also of course R.O.D The TV, the TV series follow up to the Read or Die anime that I really wish had been a bigger hit.

And my current avatar's source, Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi, which is one of the funniest animes I've ever seen.

Princess Resurrection. Weeb meets Universal Pictures classic monsters.

You're not the only fan, although it's been a long time since I've watched the series or read the manga, I was a big fan of it back in the day.

Probably the only one who is reading the sequel / remake. 😐

I finally got around to watching this really obscure super robot show called Galaxy Cyclone Braiger J9 in English, and I seriously loved it way more than I should have. The premise is that humanity spreads out and colonizes the Solar System in the future, spreading out as far as Pluto. However, with that comes corruption, and criminal forces entwined with colonization projects are called Connections (I'm guessing they were trying to refer to the French Connection) and are powerful enough to control entire governments and have their own space fleets. Their nonstop gang wars (Imagine Mexico, but on a solar system scale) harm the lives of innocents and threaten to destroy the Solar System. In the asteroid belt in a pleasure world asteroid a group of mercenaries calling themselves the J9 Cosmorangers act as shadow police for people wronged by the connections, and have their own super robot called Bryger to fight for justice.

Despite being a low budget early 80's anime it was refreshing to have a show with rock & roll as a major theme instead of idol group shit (Even the BGM was unusually good) and to have main characters acting like adults doing adult things like drinking and gambling. It's also interestingly enough the first TV braodcast anime to have an on-screen sex scene, and I thought the way they portray it was pretty damn artistic and realistic. All for a show that apparently set out originally to be a rip off of Space Adventure Cobra and Lupin.

I've seen the OP be referenced in other anime such as Watamote.

The main villain, Kamen Kamen is Egyptian themed (And assassinates his enemies and people who fail him with cobras), has an awesome mocking villain laugh, and glitters like he's straight out of a Shoujou manga. He's also fabulous enough that I was pondering he could fit neatly into Stardust Crusaders. I also dare say his theme song has one of the grooviest basslines I've ever heard.

Braiger got two follow up series that are also correspondingly obscure, Baxinger and Sasuraiger which I've never seen but have managed to hear some of their soundtrack, and it's just as great. This track from Sasuraiger is easily my favorite anime song:

The most obscure manga I can think of right now would be Kongou Banchou, the previous work from the Seven Deadly Sins guy. In spite of being from that guy I can vouch for Kongou Banchou being actually good, probably because the author was doing whatever he wanted as a somewhat lighthearted throwback to manly banchou manga was never expected to really get anywhere.

I thought you were talking about The Ping Pong Club for a second and got excited and go "Oh yeah! That's what I should've recommended!"

I know it got delayed because of Corona Chan, but they should definitely release the remake in October if they can. That would be the smart business move.

That's what's actually happening, unless they delayed it again just a week before it's meant to come out.

I just binged the "House of 5 leaves" manga and the spin off "Futagashari" for the third time.does anyone know any similar manga?

I don't know why I love the manga although I hated the Anime adaption.

Since we've officially gotten into the fall season I just want to recommend everyone to try checking out Yuru Camp if they haven't, fall into winter is the best time to watch it. If you don't mind Iyashikei shows (healing with very little conflict in a peaceful environment) it's a great show to watch while wrapped up in a blanket with a nice cup of cocoa.

Maybe try out Mob Psycho, same author as One Punch Man. Both seasons of Mob were made with a bunch of love from Bones. I'd also recommend Priconne, by the same director that did Konosuba, lots of light hearted humor that gave me a similar feel to Bofuri.

I haven't seen/watched House of 5 leaves yet, but maybe try checking out other works by Natsume Ono? I remember watching ACCA 13 which was based on the manga she wrote, really enjoyed it for the style it oozed. The manga is probably similar enough. Is there anything specific that you really liked about the two series that kept you coming back?
