I suppose it comes down to whether you believe they're being sincere with their words and actions towards the end of Future. They pretty much (and unprompted by Steven who hadn't visited in what seemed like months) started fixing their major issues and admitted fault to everything. It's a pretty anti-cynical show so I don't blame people who can't really suspend that level of disbelief. Nothing wrong with that, just a personal thing. The closest I can think of are several cartoons where a villain pretends to be redeemed for the sake of their own hidden agenda. I'll bet Lily subscribes to the Cyberchase philosophy of "Once a bad guy, always a bad guy." In scenarios like that, however, the hero can't do a damn thing to stop the villain without looking like a total knob, so they have to investigate and prove the villain is up to no good before they take serious action.
What frustrates some people about the Steven Universe finale isn't the "forgive Nazis" past, but the "blindly trust that Nazis will never be Nazis again" part. Steven letting the Diamonds free allows them to possibly go back to their horrible ways of destroying the universe as long as it's not Steven's problem anymore, which, even in the realm of children's shows, is very much possible.
Lily, obviously, falls on the cynical side but for more reasons than just "bad guys are always bad". That level of hatred goes way deeper to the people who wrote the cartoon aliens. It's a sickness.
