Care to elaborate on this? I rarely think of psychology as genuinely scientific, but I find Blanchard's descriptions of HSTS and AGP to be pretty useful. There are exceptions, but most of the troons we discuss here can be readily assigned to one of those two categories.
The tranny typology stuff as being as scientific as Myers-Briggs type indicator, which is to say, the system has some potential, but is lacking – both in scope and in actual scientific research. Blanchard’s studies are hard to reproduce and are riddled with bad controls. Both major sins if you know anything about the scientific process.
Now, this is the case with a lot of (if not most) psychological research, so he’s by no means alone here.
Mostly, ‘AGP’ and ‘HSTS’ are nice shorthands, and I do believe troons who fit both types exist; this thread alone has ample proof. I view AGP and HSTS as rough categories for genderbenders, much like ‘nerd’ and ‘jock’ can be for cliques of high schoolers. Both exists, but they are not
scientific groupings and there are certainly other options besides.
Trying to fit every high schooler into either box will both make the categories too broad and miss personal motivations that are neither jock nor nerd-related. Even if you realize the limitations and compensate by mashing ‘em together into a third nerd-jock category, you’ll still be missing a lot of people.
I believe that some actual transsexual people exit, but that these have had genetic or hormonal fuckup at some point during their development that led them to be like that. Like how intersex conditions will fuck up your reproductive development.
I also think a lot of body dysmorphic people now think they're trans simply because that's now an option. For example, how anorexic dysmorphia can be related to sex characteristics such as the breasts and vulva in females. Or how victims of rape can get so repulsed by other people's responses to their social gender they might cope by becoming "sexless", or even identifying with the opposite gender socially.
Literal autism also seem to play a huge role in whether an individual identifies as trans or some kind of bullshit xenogender. Or a dark elf otherkin, for that matter. After all, the word ‘gender’ doesn’t really mean anything these days which is confusing for regular, non-autistic people.
However, most troonism these days behave like a cult of grooming and radical politics. Whatever minority of born-trans people are out there, are drowned out in vocal fetishists and angry spergs.
And lastly, the possibility for low-effort oppression points seems to be a major draw for insecure and bored middle-class people.
