I watched through a lot of SAO expecting a cringefest and I don't get the massive hate. I thought it was pretty good. Not super deep, but entertaining and fun. Like yeah all the girls love Kirito but he chooses one unlike other animes where they do 'will they or won't they' until the last episode. And he chooses her very early so they actually have a relationship and it can play out.

A lot of people complain about emo Kitito in the first season but he was that way because he fucked up and saw all his friends brutally murdered and never wanted that to happen again.

Also holy shit at season 4 and all the Jesus metaphors. Someone converted over at the studio. But I guess its appropriate since it's the last season and all. All the arcs seem to be wrapping up and the last 4 episodes seem they're going to be an epilogue. Since the traitor fell down the elevator shaft, the leader of the PK guild turned into a tree for all eternity, the sociopath who turned into the devil was killed by Jesus and Alice was successfully saved by Asuna. My only hope is that the last 4 episodes are not all about the 200 years in the Underworld and its 'left up to the audience' whether they ever get back to reality.

Also that rape episode was overblown as hell. Goblin Slayer's was far worse.

Most people initially disliked that it didn't stay a "beat an MMO or die trapped in virtual reality" setting. The icing was that the main antagonist of season 1 admitted he had no reason for doing what he did

Is Goblin Slayer good to watch or the rape scene just gave it publicity?

It was the reverse for me, I liked that aspect. But I did have a problem with the villain's motivation too. It was basically I wanted to see if humanity could overcome the systems put in place for them which is kind of nebulous and 'wut'.

I fucking love Goblin Slayer. Brutal murder, nice dark fantasy. If you don't like violence or can't stomach sexual assault in media, then it won't be your cup of tea.

If it on the same level as Black Lagoon then it seems like its for me to watch. I have also seen clips and some episodes of Genocyber, Fist of the North Star, Violence Jack and that one anime with crazy psychokinetic bitches tearing each other to shreds with invisible arms so I think I will be fine.

I'm really not a big anime/manga person at all but for some reason I stumbled onto Akame Ga Kill, plowed through the manga in a couple of days and really liked it. Any recommendations with a similar tone?

Try checking out the other mangas W-Juliet and Ai o Utau Yori Ore ni Oborero! which are also separate from current year gender politics.

If you liked Akame Ga Kill, there's Akame ga KILL! Zero, which is a prequel. And Hinowa ga Crush! is the sequel to Akame Ga Kill which is still ongoing. So there's still plenty in that universe if you wanted. Dorohedoro is really good, but that's weird as fuck so it might not be to your tastes, but the art style is more Westernized than manga is typically. Record of Grancrest War is also another good fantasy manga, made by the guy who did Record of Lodoss War, which is basically one of the most classic fantasy anime out there. There's also Berserk (which will probably never be finished, so don't get your hopes up, but its still really good), Übel Blatt which is a dark fantasy story about revenge about someone who was betrayed and goes after people who now call themselves heroes.

Personally, I find the first season to be the only real bad part due to how rushed it was (which makes sense given the source material could only be so long since it was written for a competition) and the awful second half. SAO: Progressive is basically everything I wanted the first season to be and I'm hoping at some point it'll get animated. It's the author going back to flesh out the "world" of the first game and have them slowly going up the floors, also a greater focus on the characterizations of both Kirito and Asuna + new side characters.

I know I only ended up enjoying the series after getting bored and watching through SAO II, thought it would be something for a good laugh, yet I really enjoyed it a lot more than the first season. Got me to give the series a second chance and I'm glad I did. While the main plot with kirito bringing a sword to a gun fight and fighting against DESU gun was entertaining, what I really enjoyed was the mini-arc (Mother's Rosario) in the second half that had Asuna as the main focus which gave her some needed character growth. The movie was simply entertaining for the fact that Kirito was worthless when it came to using any of his gamer skills in real life because he was an out of shape nerd while Asuna could use her skills perfectly fine. He needed hacks to actually be useful. Gun Gale was fun for murder rabbit going on pk sprees.

Have yet to fully watch through alicization since I was waiting to marathon it, heard they did change some stuff from the LN though. One of my favorite little moments from reading the LN was when Asuna met Alice and immediately realized she was an actual threat. She never acted that way with any of the other girls in the harem which goes to show that she never saw any of them as an actual threat to her position of #1. Have to get back into reading the LN.

Probably going to check out the gameverse since I've heard it's pretty good after the first game.

I never gave the original SAO a shot, but would always get the games as a gift since friends know that I like anime. I really enjoyed Llen's story in Gun Gale Online and the dumb ending. Don't they have a SAO recap movie or a special? I keep seeing them on Hulu, but am not sure of the viewing order.

Looking it up there's Sword Art Online: Extra Edition which is part swimsuit fanservice part recap of first season. Have not seen it myself but it might work instead of watching the first season, letting you skip to SAO II -> Gun Gale -> SAO: Ordinal Scale -> SAO: Alicization.

Also, I find it highly entertaining that Kirito's VA Matsuoka Yoshitsugu gets typecast as a Harem king yet in real life is super socially awkward due to anxiety. Can't even make eye contact.

For Alicization, I've read the most changes to the LN are only in the first handful of episodes.

The harem aspect is funny to me because all the girls fall for Kirito but he's like, "Yeah, I only love Asuna." Its kind of the one aspect that really annoys me but is also hilarious because its a trope not trope in that he picks one girl early and sticks with her and doesn't look at any other girl but as a friend, but they still all want Jesus Kirito. So its funny but mildly annoying. I just wish it wasn't like that. I'm kind of tired of the harem trope in anime series that aren't specifically harem anime.

The main problem with Season 1 are the time skips. It'd be nice if they 'redo' the first season with progressive, add in PoH and more laughing coffin members to make the later seasons have more impact. But this is basically SAO's final season since there's only a side story and progressive left in the Light Novels. It'd be nice if they redid the first season as Progressive, but you'd probably need 48 episodes to cover it. So basically another 2 seasons. It'd also be interesting if they followed through and made Heathcliff the true end boss on floor 100 instead of 75. And give the villain a stronger motivation. My reasoning would be that society had become decadent and selfish, people no longer helping each other. There's a large amount of inhumanity in the world, because its become so comfortable. People are selfish and cruel to each other. There are no stakes, hence no reason to help one another. People are selfish and despicable in the reality of SAO. A somewhat dystopian-like future. He creates SAO because he wants to prove that humanity can still work together to overcome the worst circumstances. I'd put him as an abused kid who had this dream of this floating castle in the sky where he could escape to, where everyone helped each other. But there needed to be real stakes. It couldn't just be fake otherwise his hope for humanity would be false. There had to be something at risk. So that's why he has people die for real, the same as reality. He feels it is a necessary evil and tragic that he had to come to this. He also knows he can't play the role of hero, because he inherently knows what he is doing is terrible, so he adopts the villain role himself. He knows its evil and he's not a sociopath, but he feels its for the betterment of society as a whole. It'd make him a more tragic figure and when Kirito and Asuna untie to defeat him, he's proud of them. Saying that their bonds would never been created if not for this world, and they've given him hope for humanity's future.

He felt that I do think long enough time has passed where you could get away with redoing it since the series is so popular. And if Underworld has a satisfying ending, I think that would only reinforce the fandom to want it.

I hope they do something like that. Then they can basically go back and make the sequels have more impact by developing some the antagonists of later seasons and characters of them as well. As well as following Kirito's journey as he powers up and how he manages to make it through and why he was chosen.

There's also more Gun Gale Online stuff to adapt as well with Llenn.

I know the current arc of the LN is called Unital ring, but I don't know how far along it is or when they'd have enough to adapt it as I haven't gotten to it myself. If they really do run out of things to adapt they can always do some more seasons of Accel World since it's technically connected to SAO timeline just in the future.

Unital Ring is technically a side story, not a main one. They probably will do more with Accel World/Gun Gale Online. I think this is the last season for the Kirito/Asuna arcs, excepting if they re-do it with progressive.

I would like to see more adventures of Llenn and her pink P90.

Re-read Unlimited Blade Works and the writing was a lot better than I remembered. Nothing groundbreaking but I really enjoyed Shirou's monolouges and sword autism. Shame they cut it in the anime. The route sucks without it.
