I would like to dedicate this post to sperg about anime titles.

What the fuck is Gundam Build Divers Re:Rise supposed to mean?

Also is Re:[something] means anything in particular? There a bunch of animes with Re:[something] title.

Not sure but I used to think it was short for Resident Evil, until I recall it was called Biohazard in Japan.

I was hoping you'd see the ripoff of NGE with the suit only the dad's son could use as well as the "humans were the bad guys all along" comparison to AoT. That said, I'm slightly offended that you thought I told you to watch that just to make you miserable, considering how much you enjoyed tearing AOT and TLoU2 apart I knew you've love this.

I know this from the AoT thread but I did catch both of those. I called the hero a ripoff Shinji and you were right, it was far more entertaining than I thought it was.

Well, that's my analysis of the main characters, at least. @Secret Asshole don't read these until you watch the show for yourself and come up with your own analyses.

I'm downloading it tonight, since none of the like 5 fucking streaming platforms I have got it on there. And I am not paying Funamation a fucking dime. Its bad enough I pay Crunchyroll, but I at least like some of their stuff.

What is weird to me about anime titles is sometimes how fucking literal they are. Like (I know its garbage) but 'In another World With my smartphone' or shit like that. Just basically what it is.

I've always figured its because most were originally web novels, scrolling through a front page, the first thing that'll catch your eye would be the title. Having it be essentially a summary of what you're going to get seems like a marketing strategy people would do.

Yet again I remember why I am disappointed in Fate's writing after sitting through a 30 minute cooking scene

Alright, I finished all of Fushigi Yuugi tonight. I'm still standing by my previous first-impression statement about Miaka possibly being a Mary Sue, except I think the entire concept of a whole is meant to be a meta-commentary on escapism and self-fulfillment power fantasies, and Miaka and Yui still manage to be their own characters that keep them away from being considered Mary Sues/blank slates when all's said and done. It didn't really hit me that could've been a possibility until Miaka was under Tomo's illusion spell and everything was going great for her in "real life". I think I have a better argument about the meta-commentary with the conflict of Tamahome's existential crisis on if he's even a real person or a character from a storybook coming more into focus after it was brought up around episode 30 or so. Maybe I'm looking way too deep into a shoujo isekai series, but as someone who likes writing and telling stories with (hopefully) some little twists on particular tropes, I'm honestly a sucker when it comes to playing with narratives like that and making things meta. Princess Tutu did something similar for fairytales, but that magical girl series was much more impressive in how it handled it tbh.

Unfortunately, I think whatever point Yuu was trying to make just got to become more acceptable amongst fangirls, because now escapism is even more personalized than ever to the point of actual militant fights online over "feeling attacked" if someone doesn't like their favorite series/head-canons. And there's a lot of girls/grown-ass women who don't have a love life of their own so they live vicariously through sappy romances like Fushigi Yuugi because "Oh, I wish that could've happened to me" or other self-fulfillment magical world stories like Harry Potter, and I wonder if it's really all that possible to modernize Fushigi Yuugi and still keep the outcome the same.

Anyhoo, while I don't think I'll do a rewatch anytime soon (will most likely check out the manga instead), and I still think the beginning episodes were rough, I got through it okay. The OP and ED have grown on me (haven't gone out of my way to download the ED song though), I found the relationship between Miaka and Tamahome to be weird but they're very much devoted to one-another which pleases my hopeless romantic side, and kudos to Yuu for keeping characters dead once they're dead. Yeah, Eikouden had them be reincarnated, but they were in new, different bodies with slightly different personalities, I'm assuming. Also oof the OVAs are... quite out-there. Wouldn't doubt it they're from the actual manga, but even though I found the last scene from the TV series to be hokey and obviously shoehorned in for a happy ending, it was at least closure and could allow the viewer to forge their own happy endings. But I dunno. Eikouden was the roughest of it all because Mayo is awful, and yet we're still expected to feel bad for her despite her being a bitch. Once she threatened the life of Tamahome's baby to his face, there was no way I was ever going to like her. The OVA having only four episodes meant her redemption arc just felt rushed and undeserved.

Tasuki best boy btw (though I like Nuriko, too). On his very debut episode, I knew I was gonna like him. Yeah, he reminds me of Kyo Sohma, but eh, I liked him the most. Sucks he never used the illusion talismans ever again, though.

Also lol Anime-Planet, surely you jest. It was nothing compared to something like InuYasha.

Dramatical Murder has a statue and ummmmmmmmmmmm

Its.....something. chained up blue haired guy in leather...

Its a porn game, isn't it? And from what I've heard, a fairly graphic one at that. It makes sense that it would get that sort of merchandise.

I’ve been reading this odd Korean manhwa called Suicide Boy. It’s this very odd mix of dark comedy that gets really real really fast at parts. It’s definitely not for everyone, that’s for sure.
Basically, this high school kid has just a really shitty life and is trying to work up the courage to become an hero. He can’t bring himself to actually do it, but he still self-harms and stuff like that. But there is some hope, actually.
Somehow, he gets a friend who seems to be a bit oblivious to what exactly is going on, but still wants to help this guy. This character acts as the foil to our main, opposite personalities in most every way, but that serves to help our protagonist a bit.
But, the most interesting dynamic is with the second ‘friend’. This guy somehow gets involved with our main, and goes from being annoyed to being genuinely worried. This guy is fully aware of how close our main is to killing himself any day now, and it’s actually treated very seriously this time. Like, full on breaks down a door in case the main is finally slashing his wrists, it gets dark.
Later on, the author starts making odd choices that I’m not that sure about, but we’ll see what comes of it.
Overall, it’s like an oddly genderswapped and more ‘real’ Watamote. If you resonate with the content, you’d probably get the feels, otherwise I don’t know if I could recommend it.

What "odd choices" exactly?

What "odd choices" exactly?
The characters are drawn more like chibi so you feel more sympathy for them, and some of the angles start to get Islamic. It makes this really odd effect that I’m not sure is going in a good direction. It’s enough to raise a flag or two, anyways.
But at this point, it’s almost easier to list manga that doesn’t do weird shit nowadays. It’s one of the biggest issues I have with this medium.

What the fuck is Gundam Build Divers Re:Rise supposed to mean?
It's the name of the last episode.

More seriously...

Gundam because mecha, Build because it's a spin-off belonging to the 'real life but they play with robot toys' side of the franchise, Divers because it's a sequel to the previous spin-off where they play MMORPGs, and Re:Rise is because the protagonist did something that made him depressed, and now he's teamed up by chance with two other idiots and May in an adventure that will help him 'rise again' from his depressed state and make up for what he did.

But really, it's the name of the last episode and they might use the term in-universe soon too.

I've found Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out! to be pretty enjoyable. There is a shit ton of fanservice but Uzaki never feels annoying. I'd say it's sort of a mix between Blend S and Umaru Chan if those were shows you liked, only this show is about college students so it lets itself be more blunt with things.

Meh, I read a few reviews about it. Big boobed Gremlin wants to annoy you is nothing outragous but also nothing special.

But in light of the twitter outcry I thought a bit more about the midget with the flesh tooth:

In my opinion outrage was bound to happen

Give her small breasts- people complain about pedo vibes because she looks like a child.

Give her normal breasts- people complain about pedo vibes because she looks like a child.

Give her huge breasts - people complain about pedo vibes because she looks like a child but also get lots of money from thirsty otaku.

But perhaps giving her large breasts also had another reason: to prevent pedophilia accusations (which didn't work) and/or to prevent the manga from becoming known as loli crap. Big breasts are for the most part a sign of maturity even in japan and especially in anime/manga (not talking about loli fetish bullshit).

So what can you do if you want to include a main character who is small like child (which also emphazises her childish personality) without making kiddie diddler shit? Give her the breasts of a mature woman. There, problem solved and on top of that otaku are going to jerk off to her in their basement and are more likely to buy your manga, animu dvds & merchandise.

The cultural aspect

The annoying but tame adventures of big tit goblin are just a drop in the ocean of manga/anime with a similar premise - bubbly girl teases the shit out of the boring & shy male main character who just wants her to go away.

But you can also look at it from a very different perspective and then you understand that there may be a deeper cultural meaning:

Japan is a country where gender roles are stricter than in the west and also has certain rules for how you should act in society. For example people are going to laugh at you if are holding hands with your significant other in public and kiss him/her. There still is a pressure to conform.

So let's change our perspective:

(Japanese) woman who doesn't give a shit about how society is viewing her is actively pursuing a man. She knows what she wants and she doesn't let anyone get in her way. She doesn't want to hide her personality even if it leads to emberrassing incidents. She is neither shy nor passive.

I guess this is the main reason why social awkward otaku like Uzaki and female otaku might feel empowered (yeah yeah she has huuuge knockers but if that was the main reason less people would watch it because porn is available 24/7). This might be something western weebs don't think about because they are living in a different culture.

Of course there is often fan service because sweet 💴💴💴 but it makes sense why nip otaku (& weebs) like Uzaki and similar anime. Because lots of (japanese) men actually like women like this and I bet it's not just guys who watch anime all day long.

Tl;dr the white haired gnome with Robert Paulson tits represents something that's alien to japanese culture as a whole but something that people crave for.

Considering the story, where the main character when he's left alone ends up stagnating and not doing anything with his life, and Uzaki didn't start bothering him until a year had past, waiting for him to come to her, you might actually be one the money.

As the story continues, he starts to want to improve himself again. Hitting the gym, going outside for fun, going back to his sports, learning to cook properly... I don't know if it was intentional, considering its a twitter comic, but shit, it fits.

The Twitter outcry over her being pedo bait or whatever also makes less sense because it's explicitly stated they're college students (and character bios always put emphasis on ages, grade years, and blood types), so she's an actual adult, but their redraws are proof they've never had actual human interaction. Small women exist, and some of them have big breasts, and some big-tittied small women aren't hamplanets. But apparently you can't be an adult woman unless you're 5'5'' with a BMI of 30+ or something stupid like that, I don't know what it is they have against short women.

This year has been pretty lame in the "SJWs getting triggered by anime", best so far has been Uzaki-chan and it hasn't really got any of them sperging.
Good thing Kaifuku Jutsushi no Yarinaoshi, coming next year, will probably trigger feminists and pretty much everyone who just can't real life.

Fantasy setting. Peasant guy gets taken in by a princess, thanks to his healing powers. He then gets relentlessly abused raped and degraded, until he's basically just a broken animal.
He gets a second chance to do it all over and vows for revenge. Basically the first actual chapter had him torturing and raping the princess when they met again.
Oh and when the princess first refused his advances, he took a piping hot coal poker from the fireplace and asked if she'd want that inside instead. Then he wipes her memories and fools her into thinking they're lovers. And after that it gets even even worse and way more sick.
I kind of like it. There's not a single good person in the cast. Everyone is equally horrible.

Yeah if Goblin Slayer and Shield Hero triggered people, Yarinaoshi will probably give them a heart attack.

Yeah, the Coronavirus kind of killed things when it comes to "Anime that'll stir SJWs shit".

But with every anime I watch, and every time SJWs get assmad, I have to wonder why. More specifically "Why fucking watch anime when it's made by people who see as being on par with whitey?"

Because if they can't have nice things, no one can.
I say it a lot, but they revel in the misery of others. They have a seething hatred of themselves so nobody is allowed to enjoy anything.
They're not progressive or even good people, they just want to feel like they're important while sitting on their computers and doing nothing else.

Anime characters normally aren't even white. They're asian. Not brown enough on the sjw scale. And some of them even dare believe in Christianity. The religion of SLAUGHTER AND MIND CONTROL!
Kinda like it that most Japanese media actually portrays Christianity in a positive light. Like in Rurouni Kenshin and more recently in Sword Art Online.

I’m amazed it got an anime release, frankly. Whole lot or rape and sexual slavery going on in that.

Hell, imagine the reaction to the evil lesbian’s death.

On a different topic, I've decided to go take a trip back in time and once again revisit titles from the days of Streamline Pictures, Central Park Media, and the infamous OVA Boom. This time I've decided to rewatch one of the most iconic anime titles from that era, the original Vampire Hunter D from 1985.

Vampire Hunter D is one of my all time old-school favorites ever since I saw it on VHS as a kid and while it's super-edgy, that's part of why I unironically like it.

I get the fact that whole "grimdark" fad of the 90's and 2000's got played out really bad but now I think we've looped back around and gone full circle thanks to craptastic pretentious garbage like She-Ra and Steven Universe or unfunny "ironic" snarky capeshit movies.

Autistic side rant aside, Vampire Hunter D is pretty good and I watched a full rip of the English dub on YouTube. I'm surprised it hasn't been taken down yet, but I suspect it's sort of like the uploads of obscure VHS rips or Dawn of the Dead: Extended Mall Hours where it's so obscure that it's beneath suspicion, it doesn't automatically trip the copyright bots, or enough YouTube jannies are willing to look the other way (I think this is definitely the case for Dawn of the Dead '78/Zombi 1)

I know we have a thread on the Arts & Literature sub-forum for the light novels, but I still love the original 1985 movie. It's one of those iconic titles from the 80's and 90's OVA Boom and I'd say is one of those truly iconic titles alongside Ninja Scroll and Demon City Shinjuku.

AKIRA and Ghost In The Shell '95 are also from that era but they're also kind of in their own little thing. They definitely tapped into the same wider cultural zeitgeist as the OVA Boom titles but I'd say they're both a little too "big budget" and high concept than something like Angel Cop or even Vampire Hunter D.
