Yeah, it literally feels like this reality's one of those parallel universes they flick through in those sort of TV episodes.2001 in fiction: Regular spaceflight by civilians, Moon colonization, and a manned mission to Jupiter. Followed by another manned mission in 2010, when Jupiter became a second sun which inspired world peace.
2001 in reality: The worst terrorist attack in history, leading to increasing paranoia and control. 10 years later during endless recession, Occupy protests were thwarted by identity politics - leading to Clown World.
I think we're on the wrong timeline...

The 9/11 truthers was definitely an unfortunate aspect of 2000s culture and their tactic of ignoring facts in favor of a narrative eerily anticipates the SJWs attitudes (though it's associated with the right wing today, there were tons of people on the left who were 9/11 truthers)
But it was also a fairly brief phenomenon, maybe for two years everyone was asking the question "was 9/11 an inside job?" and then most people moved on, it didn't drag on for years and years and grow in intensity like woke culture.
Another thing that sucked about the 2000s is before the bitter racial division, there was the bitter Religious division, so much tiresome arguing between atheists and Christians, also anticipating the situation of the present day, but it was also a milder form and like 9/11 truthers eventually people just by and large moved on with their lives, woke culture stubbornly refuses to go away.

The thing is that the majority of the 9/11 truthers in the 2000's were largely left-wing and Alex Jones was noteworthy for being the one prominent 9/11 truther who was conservative.
Honestly, I think the religious division between atheists and Christians in the 2000's morphed into the woke culture of today. The Woke Left mainly got traction as part of a wider backlash against the old Religious Right of the Bush era during Obama's first term, and then it intensified with Occupy Wall Street where that backlash came into widespread contact with college leftists and fourth-wave intersectional feminist types and the socialist fringe as well as punk and hipster culture. These mostly disparate elements coalesced into the SJW's and wider Woke Left of the 2010's and 2020.
Really, I'd say the atheistic left of the 2000's was a pretty big thing and pretty much everyone hated the hardcore fundies and neocons, including most Christians.
That initial divide can still be seen today with the overall SJW obsession with witchcraft and the constant attacks on Christianity and the Religious Right despite the latter being dead or at least completely impotent for the better part of a decade.
I also think it kinda explains their obsession with Harry Potter pre-2020 and the Woke Left's fondness of Islam despite Islam being extremely patriarchal and anti-LGBT. The Bush years of the 2000's were notorious for Islamophobia and Bush was also the last president to really lean on the Religious Right and his administration was the last one where they had any influence at all on national level politics in America.
The Woke Left Muslims as oppressed POC's and fellow travelers who are anti-Christian and anti-Zionist/antisemitic while the Religious Right was pro-Zionist and generally supported Israel and abhorred antisemitism.
Subconsciously, SJW's are stuck in the 2000's but only in the worst possible ways and they hate almost all of the good things about the 1990's and 2000's cultural zeitgeist.

That was my point, they've pulled a switcheroo and now want people to associate 9/11 truthers with conservatives, but it was originally a left wing movement and it was an early warning sign just how deranged and detached from reality the left can become.
9/11 truthers would often harass those that were against it too much like the modern woke left.

A huge sticking point for me with the streaming services is the amount of data they collect. Netflix is what, $15 now? And even though you pay, they collect analytics on you. I fundamentally believe that if I'm paying for a service I should be able to opt out of analytics.
They also randomly remove episodes of shows and sometimes entire movies and shows because of what the rage mob is focused on this week. I understand they nuked an episode of Community recently for a joke where someone dresses as a dark elf and it looks like he's in blackface.

@Dom Cruise I miss the 90s. There weren’t CCTV cameras and chain-link fences everywhere, people weren’t as paranoid, and generally, we weren’t continually on guard for the threat of Islamic terror. The immediate post-9/11 period still had some good movies and vidya. Everything really started to go to shit when the subprime lending crisis kicked in and political correctness reared its ugly head. I can’t stand all the woke, sellout bullshit we have now.

Only in the sense that it was somewhat better culturally than now. No social media or smart phones in the majority of it, Internet was at its peak, and media was still attempting to provide good original content other than majority capeshit or sequels.
It was the worst decade of US politics though. 9/11, Iraq, and 2008 gang raped this country for decades to come.

You're not wrong to prefer the 90s but for me personally it was so long ago by this point that my memories of it seem pretty remote, whereas I have memories of the 2000s that feel like yesterday.
It's a pretty poor reflection of the present day that the 2000s now seem like a lost paradise considering what was going on then, but it's true.

I was born in 2000 and even as a small child I recognized how much the 00s sucked. At least the Onion was actually good back then and Youtube hadn't been bought out yet.

Are you kidding? TV largely sucked in the 00s, especially kids TV. We remember the good shows because we forgot the 99% that weren't. There were so many shitty Family Guy derivatives out there and most kids cartoons tried to be Spongebob (the shitty post-movie Spongebob). Half of those shows you listed are from the 90s.
It was also a pretty dark period for animation. The 2000s saw the decline and eventual demise of individually shaded cels in Western animation in favor of CGI + flash + toonboom.
Bush v Gore was a shitfest. That said it's hard to imagine now anybody willingly conceding in a contested election.

If you want to go back to a time when politicians acted gentlemanly, you'd have to go much farther back to the early 90s at the latest.
Point is I remember people on 00s message boards laughing at the idea that people would eventually fetishize the 90s, let alone the then-current decade. I'm wary of wearing nostalgia glasses for any particular era. Life has always sucked.

it seems like early 2000s were better because i was too young to give a shit about anything. i didn't even know what BYOB by system of a down was about or that Muse's Black Holes and Revelations album was about politics. still sang the fuck out of that shit happily.
politics was always a thing, it's just that now it's harder to ignore because 1 we are older and 2 how accessible the internet has become.
the only thing i miss, or wish i got more usage out of, was back when the internet was the wild west. that shit was genuinely fun and exciting to explore.

Kinda agree with the politics part. The internet is a big part of why we cannot escape from it. To counter a bit though, I think politics have become a trend, and as such it will have an expiration date. The same way goth culture took the 2000s or punk, rebellious Bart Simpsons seem to have the 90s, politics are just the new cultural trend. I say give it another year or two and most main stream things that had not previously built themselves on politics will fall back into some new trend. Most are just riding a high given by Trump as comedy from him takes little thought to create.
