They didn't burn the books to deny their existence. They burned the books so that the memetic virus didn't spread. There definitely have been what we'd have called "trans people" dating back thousands of years, but they were always on the fringes of society, and usually forced into sexwork. In the past 500 years, there were "sissy bars" in 18th century London (could be mixing this particular term up with a similar concept from the 19th century American West), and there were women living as men, and not just for perceived male benefits - there were those who considered themselves as "male", called themselves male, referred to themselves as male, and even had wives. So was Jesus of Nazareth. Your point?
The problem with Magnus Hirschfield is how much of that is genuine proto-transgender shit and how much of it is tranny revisionism like they've done with Marsha P. Johnson?
I always got the feeling Magnus Hirschfield was more of an IRL mad scientist who tried to apply Freud's cocaine-fueled psychosexual insanity to surgery, sort of like Mengele did with Nazi race lunacy in his experiments. I could be wrong, but the whole "the Nazis burned books about trans people to deny their existence" really comes off as a gender-sped canard on the level of "Marsha P. Johnson was a tranny and started the Stonewall riots singlehandedly"
Hirschfeld apparently was trying to collect information on transgender / homosexual stuff and also liked dressing up himself, and gathered a bunch of tranners to his Sexual Institute. My pet conspiracy theory is that the Nazis burned it because Hirschfeld had mounds of data regarding the homosexuals that the Nazi party was riddled with, particularly in the SA, but I can't prove this one way or the other.
