- It is well known that transsexualism has been renamed, redefined, and removed from the disease category. Yet no matter how the medical institution altered the definition, the relevant medical label (nowadays "gender dysphoria") remains vague and open to interpretation. "Definitions are inadequate in explaining how anyone experiences the gender of the opposite sex. Without further explanation of ‘toys, games or activities’ that are typical of each sex, this is left to parents, teachers and doctors to determine."
- The Royal College of Psychiatry's definition of "conversion therapy" includes "placing barrier to [medical] transition" -- i.e. the necessary medical assessment which troons call "gatekeeping". This gives trannies and trans-rights group the ground to push the "self-ID is enough" agenda.
- Gender studies insist that "gender identity" is distinct from biological sex. Given there is currently no evidence that brain states correlate with gender identity, gender identity becomes essentially an unverifiable and unfalsifiable "essence" or "soul". Transsexualism is (as I've long argued) mind-body dualism in disguise. As most psychiatrists reject mind-body dualism, dealing with the transsexual narrative is difficult for them. The authors of the paper urge that "[psychiatrists] must deal with all our patients with compassion but also make safe medical decisions when demonstrable material reality is at odds with a patient's subjectivity".
- Tavistock recorded a 25x increase in cases between 2009-2019, at least three-fourths are girls who think they are boys.
- Kaltiala-Heino found that most gender-confused children in Finland have other mental-health problems; over half were subjects of bullying -- mostly before the onset of their "gender dysphoria" and is unrelated to gender incongruence. Experience in UK has been similar, and gender-confused girls are found to be predominantly same-sex attracted (only 8.5% reported attraction to boys)
- The RCPsych, while being fully aware that various psychiatric disorders are over-represented in gender-confused children, is apprehensive that if psychiatrists spend too long sorting out -- and treating -- their mental illnesses, they will be accused of "placing barrier to medical transition", i.e. the unforgivable CONVERSION THERAPY!!!!!! (And imagine a doctor telling a "transboy" that being attracted to girls doesn't mean she is a boy...)
- The troon crowd love to play the suicide card (‘better a live daughter than a dead son’), yet the data of the incidence troon suicides are of poor quality, cannot be used to establish cause-effect relationship, and, as our fellow Kiwis knows full well, does not decrease even after medical transition. Hence the claim that medical transition reduces sucidality has no factual basis.
- Evidence suggests that almost 100% of children commencing puberty blockade go on to receive cross-sex hormones. Take that, the "blockers are given to children to give them more time to decide" crowd! Incidentally Tavistock is under investigation as to why their rate for cross-sex hormone usage is so high.
- Puberty is a normal physiological process, and, contra Zach, Guillaume LaBelle et all, is not a pathology to be opted out.
- The authors' Conclusion is especially pertinent and deserves to be quoted at length:
Language that confuses or conflates sex and gender identity, while appearing inclusive, might have the unintended consequence of closing down the means to understand complexity and respond appropriately to patients’ emotional and material reality.... [V]iewing transgender as a fixed or stable entity, rather than a state of mind with multiple causative factors, closes down opportunities for doctors and patients to explore the meaning of any discomfort.
The push for early bodily modification and hormones by some transgender patients is a cause for concern. New services, modelled on commissioning guidance from NHS England for adults of 17 years and above, will allow for self-referral, preclude psychological formulation or therapeutic intervention as standard practice, and recommend hormonal intervention after two appointments... unquestioning gender affirmation... may itself prove to be another form of conversion therapy, creating a new cohort of life-long patients dependent on medical services
From what I've summerized, you can very well see Zach's supposed rebuttal is completely pointless. The authors are not "talking about entirely manufactured media controversy in Britain that has nothing to do with actual clinical practice". On the contrary, they are completely on the pulse of whatever shenanigans the NHS has been pulling, and expresses their concern that worse are still to come. I don't think Zach has read the article at all.
