How about Telefang I've never played it, but it seems ripe to be a Pokemon clone just judgeing by the Wiki page.

They even got bootlegged as Pokemon games back in the day. Pretty good games though if you play the real translation, or the bootleg for laughs.

The game is decent, but fandom is so teeny, it literally has a "queen", annoying sjw RacieB (yes, that bitch that ruined Hekixchamber)...but then again, you can simply avoid those people.

This is all merely scratching the surface. The company that made Telefang was led by a man who ran a pedophile ring if my memory serves me correct and the only reason the company got shut down is because the guy got caught.

It's a shame - Telefang had some interesting ideas.

I suppose I could bring up a guilty pleasure of mine - Dogmons! It's a Brazillian ripoff digimon, but all the digimon are dogs and it takes place in space!

It failed miserably when it debuted, but the people behind it have since turned it into a webcomic that looks marginally better.

Does anyone remember when Yokai Watch was trying to be the "new" Pokemon? Needless to say that lasted about 6 months and it quietly went away.

if Monster Rancher could ever make a comback? Maybe make it so that it reads your system for other installed games?

Yokai Watch is still around as Ramotith said, but looking back I can see why it failed. I've mentioned it before in the Terrible Fakemon Thread, but I think a lot of the reasons most of these franchises fail is because they're trying to be the next Pokemon/Digimon/Monster Rancher/Yu-Gi-Oh!/etc. without bringing anything new to the table beyond the monsters themselves.

It's difficult as fuck to pull off, and the only franchise that I've seen really make a name for itself beyond having a cult following is the Persona series (and considering that it was a spinoff from the franchise that started the monster collecting genre, that's not surprising).

That is half-true. Yookai Watch i still going, with a YookaiWatch 4++ being localised.

You're absolutely right. The series is still very popular. I was referring more to when Nintendo was really advertising the original game. I don't remember the year but it was all over that year's e3 Direct. Not only that but merchandise was everywhere. They had figures, plush toys, the watch, an anime. Now it's nowhere to be found.

It's a series worth checking out honestly. I played the 2nd game in the series since I found it cheap. It was ok. I can definitely see why someone would like it, it's just not my thing.

That show looks like bootleg neopets more then digimon.

I remember a shitty pokemon clone that was online and had zones you have to unlock and I think they weren't made yet. It was trying to be the answer to pokemon being crappy but it ends up as a grind fest and was just equally shit as well. Was that mentioned here?

Edit: nvm, found it

What is it called?

It's weird that every poke-clone needs their own Cubone. Like, can't they find another way to put a skull onto something's face or head?

No, it’s actually still up on the 3DS shop. A lot of stuff got kind of moved over.
Ah, yeah I remember Crystal Monsters. I got as far as to seeing my monster evolve.

Back in the day you had 3 big monster collecting games: pokemon, Digimon, and Monster Rancher. I have always prefered Monster Rancher over the other two. I feel you had a better conection with your monster, it felt like a being you were breeding, rather than just a collection of stats. I remember in Monster Rancher 2 having a Draco Moochi and how it regularly gave me mud dolls as gifts. Lol, I think my first experience with death, that I remember, was when it died. And messing around with your cds to get new monster was always fun. I wonder if Monster Rancher could ever make a comback? Maybe make it so that it reads your system for other installed games?
I agree, the Monster Rancher games were great. Still remember the first time my monster died of old age. I hadn't even expected that to be in the game because, well, why would it be? No other monster game at the time had that. Then those stars flew over and you see the ghost leaving your monster. That hit hard. And the CDs! Trying all the different CDs to see what you would get. Man, I wish they'd make a new one. (Apparently a remaster is coming but it's going to be Japan-only unfortunately.) The Digimon games are fairly decent too imo.
