It is 6PM you aren walking through a mall park infested with zombies escorting a bunch of adults who most certainly have special needs given how they appear to have very little survival instinct. You hope that you'll be able to tard wrangle them long enough to reach the safe house. Then suddenly you hear a guitar. Then the sound of a jeep engine. After a few seconds you hear a voice shout "WEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLL." You turn around and see the one thing more horrifying than the living dead. A cracker, a tonk, and a nigger are coming at you in a huge ass jeep mounted with a heavy machine gun. At this moment you know things are going to go to shit real fast.

Really blows my mind to think that Dead Rising turns friggin' 14 this year, I still remember playing it for the first time so well.
 
I have the Hexbox Game Pass thing and Dead Rising 4 is on it. I played and enjoyed DR2 but I've heard a lot of mixed things about DR4, curious what you guys thoughts on it are.

You be wasting your time, it's a cash grab game made by unpassionate developers and the lead producers used to work at EA, there's no timer and all and the "Psychopaths" called maniacs in the game are lackluster, story is a far cry of all three games as it just more padding and nostalgia baiting, the DLC "frank rising" is a slap in the face as it continues the story as Frank as a Zombie; a literal franchise zombie

I say enjoy the game but I would recommend starting at DR1 to know what's the original premise for the franchise as DR4 was the killing blow for Capcom Vancouver

Play DR 1,2 and MAYBE 3...ignore 4 like every sane person on God's green earth.
 
You know, I have realized something while playing DR 3.

The game takes place in 2021 and the goverment is forcing orwellian methods, such as chipping, on its citizens to contain a disease and for the sake of "security", brought along by an obviously evil CEO

....huh....who knew Dead Rising 3 was the simpsons of gaming, predicting the future and all
 
I keep considering going back and finishing 3 and even giving 4 a try.

But then I remember I'd rather just play the original again, which is all you really need, even 2 was a downgrade although it was acceptable.

2 at least maintained the tone and style, 3 was too drab and dreary, they were clearly going for a Walking Dead style and while they seemed to want to return to the proper style and tone with 4 all they wound up doing was making an inferior version of the first game it seems.

Still, curiosity is a bitch and I can't help but be curious to experience them myself.

There are other games that impacted me more from a story and emotional level, but as for what I find the most fun to play the original Dead Rising is a good candidate for my all time favorite game, there's just something about it to where I can run around that mall and mess with the zombies for hours and it just never gets old to me.

And it was love at first sight too, from the very first moment I saw coverage of the game at E3 2005 I was obsessed with it, even in its earlier, rougher state I knew there was a world of potential in the premise and thankfully Capcom nailed it.

So my point is given what a massive fan I am of the original it's weird to think there exists two whole sequels I've never played to completion, so one day I may have to just bite the bullet and play them given that it isn't clear whether there will be another one and beggars can't be choosers.

Im okay with DR 3's existance, if anything, I can give credit that the story was conclusive and with the cure, it would have been okay to end the series there. It wasnt the best entry but it still ended on a somewhat positive note.

DR 4 had to cheat to get a sequel out, saying its some "new strain" that somehow the cure and zombrex are useless against. And you know, setting the sequel somewhere without the cure or zombrex would have been the better route. Tho it was best to leave DR 3 be and just end it there, either do a decent sequel or dont bother with one at all.

The first game itself works as a pretty standalone story with no real obvious sequel hooks (I mean it has them, just not anything blatant)

I think at this point in time the best thing to do with the ip would be a full on reboot with a fresh continuity.

It'd be interesting, especially if they actually made it a 2006 period piece ala the Resident Evil 2 and 3 remakes for 1998 (especially 3)

Making it a 2000s period piece is about the only way you could have a mall setting populated with a lot of people with no empty storefronts and have it make sense, because that's something you probably wouldn't see today.
 
1, 2, and off the record, are some of my favorite games of all time, but I don't think that charm could really be replicated at this point.

I say let it just be a good oldschool game series and let it kind of die out. Unless capcom actually wants to put in the effort of capturing the spirit of the old games.
 
On second thought, the idea of a straight up remake of the first game isn't all that appealing, because for me the graphics still hold up decently and that version would always be more nostalgic to me since that's simply the one I remember playing.

It's hard actually to know what to do with this series to be honest, it seems like they had a perfect opportunity with 4 but bungled it.

I still think there's potential in the premise because there's nuances to the first game's mechanics that were never properly brought back for any of the sequels, but storywise and all that it's hard to know where to go.

One potential thing they could do though and while this would be a little weird, is they could follow up on Off The Record's continuity, thus ignoring 3 and 4 and offering them more of a clean slate for a new game as well as a way to bring Frank West back again.

Does anyone know though why the series was handed over to a Canadian developer instead of a sequel being made with the original development team? One thing's for certain is any new Dead Rising game should be developed by Capcom Japan themselves, not a third party.

The idea and core gameplay of deadrising is something that could stand to be remade or rebooted. As others have said set in 2006 as a period piece maybe bring the series signature satire in to comment on how every zoomer and millennial is wrong when they cry "everything was better in my time! " because yeah... Economy in the toilet, war on terror stripping away people rights to privacy, no the 2000s where not all sunshine and rainbows .

And of course integrate features that the original game didn't have like combo weapons, vehicles not so much cause the willamete mall was really small. honestly the only time vehicles came in handy in the original dead rising was during the tunnel scenes.

I wouldn't mind some combo weapons but I don't want them to be the DR 3 and 4 super weapons that allow you to effortlessly kill 100s of zombies at a time. A big part of Dead Rising 1 was it was generally better to navigate the zombie hordes then decimate them and I wouldn't want that changed. I'm fine with having weapons like that from challenges and completions for post game stuff though.

Yeah I mean stuff that would make sense for Frank to whip up in a mall with little more than duct tape and spit. The spiked bat, the sledgesaw the paddle saw those simple weapons that get the job done and look cool.

Dead Rising 3 is one of those games that's great on its own, but unfortunately tied to a series that's so good that expectations were astronomical, and it looks kinda shitty when compared to 1 and 2.

It's also baffling that Dead Rising 4 of all things got a complete version, but Case Zero and West forever remained 360 exclusives. What the hell, man.

Not that I've ever seen. Dead Rising PC doesn't seem to have very many mods, and I feel like Stipo would have talked about it

dunno how much you could mod the levels but it seems like a reasonable idea since it's an irl mall
