Chick-fil-A’s Dan Cathy asks white Christians to repent of racism

White Christians should repent for racism and fight for their black brothers and sisters, Chick-fil-A's CEO urged, after weeks of protests over police brutality and the death of Rayshard Brooks.

Cathy spoke about racism in America during a 70-minute roundtable discussion Sunday at Passion City Church in Atlanta. Brooks had been shot dead two days earlier by an Atlanta police officer in a Wendy's parking lot, sparking protests.

"Most of us, white people, we're out-of-sight-out-of-mind oblivious to it," Cathy said about injustice against black Americans. "We cannot let this moment pass."

The son of Chick-fil-A founder S. Truett Cathy said the company has had "about a dozen Chick-fil-A restaurants vandalized in the last week, but my plea would be for the white people, rather than point fingers at that kind of criminal effort, would be to see the level of frustration and exasperation and almost the sense of hopelessness that exists on some of those activists within the African-American community."

He started having conversations with employees and realized even at its corporate office there was "conscious and unconscious biases" that made black team members feel like they weren't "treated with honor, dignity and respect."

Speaking with Louie Giglio, Passion City founder, and Lecrae, a Christian rapper, Cathy said, "we as caucasians, until we’re willing to just pick up the baton and fight for our black, African-American brothers and sisters, which they are as one human race, we’re shameful. We’re just adding to it."

He added, "Our silence is so huge at this time. We cannot be silent. Somebody has to fight and God has so blessed our city, but it’s shameful how we let things get so out of whack.”

Cathy spoke about repentance and taking action, then shined Lecrae's shoes on stage: "Any expressions of a contrite heart, of a sense of humility, a sense of shame, a sense of embarrassment ... an apologetic heart, I think that's what our world needs to hear today."
Cathy's public comments come after he published a post on his personal LinkedIn page titled, "Use Your Power and Influence."

He described how Chick-fil-A has worked to improve “the most distressed zip code in Georgia." The company also donated money and resources to local businesses and institutions, and is helping plan redevelopment of the area.

Earlier this month, Chick-fil-A apologized for a viral photo of an employee wearing a "Back the blue" shirt. The company was criticized as "racist," but the shirt actually was supporting a local football team and the picture was several years old.

What about being mean to gays? Gays LOVE CFA but feel that tiny donations from a corporate figurehead somehow prevent them from partaking - but ethnic minorities are getting asspats now?

I think the gays should take up arms and sashay at both the corporations and the privileged minorities.

I get and appreciate the intention. Chick Fil A is a very inclusive establishment for all to enjoy chicken.

His previous opinions on gay rights is a bit jarring with his current statement, but I'm not going to hold that against him.

Unity should be encouraged, by that which should be achieved though understanding and civility, not destruction.

I guess it hit close to home with Atlanta and his ten stores being vandalized.

I guess it IS mild pandering but CFA has been honest with their beliefs which is more than what I can say for the others.

How do I repent for a sin that I have not commit? I'm sure there are significantly worse things I should be repenting for than jokingly uttering the n-word, and calling non-blacks the n-word, etc.

Oh lord, why does 15% of the population commit 80% of the crime? Amen.

Exaggerations aside, widespread single motherhood, most likely. Destabilizes the household, leaves the child aimless and insecure, more susceptible to taking up crime as a lifestyle. Increasing crime leads to businesses and other wealthy fleeing, which leads to food/medicine/education deserts as well as job loss, the latter of which leads to more poverty, which accentuates inequality, which causes more crime.

This flurry of protests is going to die out without anybody talking about any of the internal issues within the community because in addition to white people (mainly liberals, but not all of them) either not getting the scope of the manifold issues within the African-American community or having active interests in perpetuating it, BLM is likely a campaign arm of the DNC that's actually for the destabilization of the nuclear family structure, according to their manifesto.

They're fomenting (more) discontent in the African-American community against a vague enemy powered by various, non-organized individuals and groups, so they won't notice what's in their own closets, whether it was placed there by other people. The people asking for white people to repent will solve nothing, but they'll still get to feel good about it.

This is all just posturing. All the companies pandering to this just don’t want their bottom line affected. Also, these companies really need to stop using Twitter to base their reality off of.

Black brothers are our greatest ally in fried chicken consumption and gaybashing.
Imagine being offended that a chicken restaurant is catering to black people. The joke is writing itself. Just eat the delicious sandwich.

This entire auto de fe was never about helping black communities, it was about soothing the delicate sensibilities of middle-class whites. Corporations just saw a way to get into the good graces of consumers, and they predictably took it.

I assume polishing the shoes is supposed to be symbolic of Jesus washing his apostles’ feet to show that he was not better than them?

Except it doesn’t really work when you’re a millionaire polishing the shoes of another millionaire.

And to add insult to injury, it's during Pride Month, which is already being pretty widely ignored compared to usual. What a shitshow.

Oh goodie. Clean the shoes of a rapper, who almost always feed into the toxic ghetto culture in the US. Amazing.
