Drawing a connection between these two topics is stupid unless you have context -- especially when we're talking about clearly demarcated pornographic content. I can or at least should be able to enjoy softcore girl-on-girl and interracial pornography while also complaining about the fetishization of lesbianism or racial othering in popular culture without necessarily being a hypocrite. Or even less abstractly, there's a difference between your buddy staring unflinchingly at the tits of a lapdancer and drooling over the cleavage of the sales clerk.

That's why I said "fictional characters". Because there is also a difference in staring a drawing of a lap dancer, crying for the rights of fictional kids murdered in a comic event, shame people with fetishes involving fiction while having peanuts porn in a profile of an adult website.

You are not a hypocrite, I also tend to have similar opinions about over sexualization and racial representation. My line is trying comparing absstraction and reality that directly with that example.

No offense, but I don't think you're quite understanding the argument critics like Linkara are making. No one* is actually advocating for the rights of fictional characters, they're (indirectly) complaining about the impact those depictions have on readers.

*I'm giving Linkara the benefit of the doubt here, having only watched a couple of his videos more than five years ago and also having read a satire of his godawful Lightbringer comic. But if he did say something like that then he's crazy and deserves lolcow status just for that.

I don't think he's wrong in hating the way her death was used or the fact that she had to die, but it IS, quite literally, 'crying for the rights of fictional kids murdered in a comic event'.

Also, much of his dislike of Frank Miller comes from the very 'WHORES WHORES WHORES' nature of the comics, which I can't blame people for overreacting and thinking he's a hypocrite based on the revelations.

No offense but... this pasts months drama has make me pretty sore of people that starts with "No one is advocating for x", specially when talking about works of fiction . I can see why popular culture should be more inclusive but I also can see that saying "impact those depictions" have become hijacked with "stuff I don't like it happens". Linkara was always free of complaining about depictions of x issue in comics, hell I do all the time, but you don't have idea how preachy was about it and how nitpicky he IS.

Also, I want to ask you a question: you know why I didn't exactly liked that last example about "top dancer and clerk?" I would have agreed with you otherwise as I also believe that there is diference between porn and enterteiment but there is also a big one between fiction and reality that example undermines as in the end one involves real people and different social situations.

I was really dissapointed about that part of his review. Because Lia was killed and stuffed in the fridge in a so poor and blatant way that anyone can see why it was so shitty but he somehow made me cringe as he seemed more offended that it happened to child that doesn't exist than the actual character or how actually affected Red Arrow character to justify a cheap and shitty mini series. It was so easy to destroy that comic but he made it somehow more about being outraged of the deaths of fictional kids than being a shitty storytelling mechanism and bad writting just to make a character a cliche anti hero.

Then out of curiosity I read Cry for Justice #7. I promptly put the Starman Omnibus back on the shelf. It's sad, really - I was really thinking I'd enjoy actually owning Starman and not just reading summaries and analyses of it. Subsequently, I am dropping your Justice League book. That I was really enjoying, but you have made it clear, Mr. Robinson, that we do not think alike when it comes to how characters, particularly child characters, should be treated.

If Linkara didn't react to fictional characters getting brutalized the way he does, then it wouldn't be that hypocritical of him.
 
Gather round chillun as I have a story to tell.

A few years ago a friend of mine went to a con. This was before CA turned into a total shitfest. Now she is good looking, not my type but a nice looking girl. She and her friends were fans of CA and went to a Linkara live event. She went to get autograph and he looked at her in this weird way and started talking to her to the point he was holding up the line. After awhile my friend excused herself and went to other parts of the con. Now apparently Linkara has a gaggle of fan girls that follow him around at these events and he's easy to pick out from the crowd.

For half the day my friend would run into him. As in he would appear randomly as if looking for her. She said it was really creepy and the way he talked and spoke to her gave her some weird vibes. She was polite and spoke to him and then left the con a few hours later. After that she said she didn't like Linkara anymore. He seemed to be one of those guys who would take advantage of their female fans.

Funny enough she also knows Linkara's new GF who I've seen on facebook. She actually seems like a nice person and why/how she can put up with someone like Linkara I have no idea.

That sounds pretty creepy... At least she wasn't attacked by his fan girls or anything like that. Still creepy, though... :\
 
I don't really like Linkara's reviewing style, but I do think it's entirely possible to have fetishes in fiction that DON'T carry over into real life without being a hypocrite.

And again, must of us would agree if it was not that he often implies some sort of form of adherence of this IRL standards to fiction. Being disgusted with stuff happening in comics (that are mostly not directed to children since a while ago) while having a digital porn stash that includes recent stuff like Frozen.

You know, there is a spectrum of content and appropriateness between 'XXX get-you-fired-from-work porn' and 'stuff appropriate for Nick Jr.'. I can, without engaging in hypocrisy, simultaneously love reading ultra-violent comics and manga like Punisher MAX and Fist of the North Star while still getting disturbed at, say, the climax of Sonichu 10 or certain Jack Chick tracts. Assuming that Linkara is mostly reviewing mainstream comics, he's not necessarily in the wrong to complain about certain depictions of violence or sex or sociological relations -- even if mainstream comics these days skew to an older and more sophisticated audience. And even if his particular complaints are misguided or even totally fucking wrong, that still doesn't make him a hypocrite.

I'm pretty sure Linkara has said that a character is "untouchable" or "needs to be written right", like Batman ( while having favorited a image of Futa Harley Queen sodomizing him). Yes, is shitty pornographic fan art and is whatever person business if they get turned by it in their personal time as it doesn't hurt anybody... Guess what? people would found hypocritical that you decry oversexualization and "disgusting stuff" to a frankly preachy degree.

I get your point, hell, I share your point that there is cognitive diference between getting of by fan art of your favorite character and the actual medium where the character and its stories are developed. But you should try to get why people percived that point is lost by how Linkara usual rethoric about reviewing fiction is.
 
I don't think his argument is that Wonder Woman et al should never be drawn in sexually suggestive scenarios by anyone, anywhere, just that there's a time and place for that, and it ain't in the pages of DC Comics. If memory serves, he actually said something to the effect of "If I want to look at porn, I'll look at porn. What I don't want is a badly written comic that's thinly-disguised porn for adolescents!" in one of his earlier videos. It's not something I necessarily agree with, but I don't think it's totally hypocritical.

Regarding his tastes in spank material, I'm surprised he hasn't said something to the effect of "Oh, Linkara the fictional character is a stuck-up prude, yeah. But I, Lewis Lovhaug, am a total freakin' perv." Both Doug Walker and James Rolfe have said before that the opinions of their characters aren't 100% their own - the former even has a currently ongoing video series about that - so it seems like an even more obvious excuse to use.

Pure speculation here but based on the story's about him IRL we've heard so far it seems he's a bit of a narcissist, likes having power over people and has this constant ar of superiority. So maybe it's as simple as if he just came clean about his porn habits it would mean taking himself less seriously and presenting himself as flawed which a narcissist would have trouble doing? I mean James and Doug are super quick to mock themselves and seem pretty humble all things considered, Lewis seems more the type to mock himself a tiny bit but always still be the hero at the end and this is a situation where you don't come out unscathed...I dunno, just my thoughts on it.
