Paper mario should be the abandoned western canon where they still live in Brooklyn and also includes waluigi and wario. Make up the party cast of the literalist of literal who's in mario lore and have them go to places that have maybe only a slight mention in passing and have those worlds be expanded upon. I mean it would be nice to have context for where mario kart areas are located.

But no Baby characters and no Doctor baby characters.

Got to wonder what other shit they regressing? Would it be degressing, because to regress means going backwards, and well if they regress too much we might have a good Paper mario game.

Well, that’s disappointing. They tease us with the characters only to have them not be genuine partners. Why is it such a taboo thing to just have this be an oridinary RPG?

Now I just hope they haven’t completely fucked up the battle system this time (I’m still not sure what the thought process behind it was) and that there’s at least the ability to level up. I definitely have less hope in the latter.

The game is just a death march toward the final boss fight, with each of your allies being turned into a husk by the enemy.

By the end, friendless and full of sorrow, Mario isn't even any different than the foes he is fighting. And so the Origami King's greatest machination bears fruit and Mario falls in line beside his soulless comrades.

And then Waluigi comes in to save the day.

Waaaaah Waluigi time. That the point where we find out that mario segment was only half of the game. We cut back in time to the start and weplay as luigi getting his own group of partners that arent bland, and we end where We started with luigi at the final boss.

It hurts too much how cool that might be.
 
This whole thing is a weird weird confusing mess.

First Miyamoto wants them to change the formula. Then there was a poll by Club Nintendo where 2% said they played it for the story. This is despite the fact that it's a fucking RPG.

It does look promising. It looks like you can go to different towns and locales. Hopefully the writing is still the best part. I would like to see Peach as a partner. She could use a parasol and they could even bring back that little homosexual star thing from the first game. twink? tink?

And bring back Kammy Koopa ffs!!!

The first two games in this series were really good entry level RPGs that catered to both beginners and more advanced players that could squeeze and optimize the game if they really wanted, and though people wanted more of that, the higher ups at Nintendo decided to treat Paper Mario like a brand and not a series and test out the waters with SPM.

Coincidentally, I've seen a lot of people saying they started out with that game without bothering to give the first two a try, not many realizing that at the time when actual world-building in Mario was sparse but thoroughly enjoyable, people pleasantly enjoyed this continued experimentation; each Mario spinoff brought different things to the table, but it respected the series's growing search for identity by making little nods to other Mario games; TTYD for instance is barely Toadette's second big appearance before she made it into the mainline games proper.

Under Nintendo's new mandates, the kind of Mario worldbuilding prevalent up until the Wii really isn't possible; ever since NSMB, we've gotten game after game that's wanked the classic mainline Mario platformers themselves in lieu of the greater Mario world spinoffs and side material have suggested. It's unlikely we're getting another full-fledged RPG that's honest and doesn't have to resort to knee-high paper puns or other low hanging "franchise-aware" fruit seeing how these design choices are bleeding into every other spinoff. The action-adventure angle these recent entries have been pushing look like the only other path they can take.

It was neat when they kept him and his schtick in Yoshi's Island and away from the main games, but ever since NSMB Wii Miyamoto's felt the need to keep him around as Bowser's assistant (and Bowser Jr.'s caretaker by extension too). I don't hate him, but seeing him as often as the Koopalings in modern Mario games feels jarring.

It wouldn't even be taken seriously either.

I can just imagine as things start to look grim for the mushroom kingdom, suddenly, out of nowhere, Waluigi would come driving in on his Go-kart and rams it into the Origami King killing him instantly. Then, with the mushroom kingdom free from the King's rule, he leaves as quickly as he came.
