Ireland can now forcibly detain people who disobey instructions to isolate themselves, including taking them somewhere other than their home if necessary. Police and medical staff have the authority to enter people's homes to check if people living there have the virus, and anyone who tries to escape quarantine can be fined or sentenced to three months in prison.

This actually became the case three weeks ago when the Covid19 was added to the list of notifiable diseases, but it's only being reported now.

The Australian Prime Minister (lol, i.e. mine) just did a very American address to the nation, broadcast across networks addressing Corona.

It's been a while since we've had one of our leaders doing that. (We're fucked, lol).

I'm surely not the only one who's more scared of this shit more than the virus right? All of our lovely governments have probably been waiting for this kind of scenario to exact tighter control on the populace than ever before under the guise of "protection and safety". Likely won't stay this way and it's just an overly extreme precaution, but don't think even for a second that some might pass this event up as an opportunity...

Probably just being overly tinfoil hatty, but that notion still creeps up in the back of my mind from time to time during this whole mess.

In this case the law isn't even new, it's the Health Act of 1947. It hasn't even been amended to update the fine to €, it's still £. The only new bit is that the coronavirus has been added to the list of diseases it can apply to. It already technically applied to things like measles and tuberculosis if people with those were going around licking doorhandles.

Scomo.mp4

The unbearable lightness of neoliberal politicians on full display. Bouncy cadance like he's selling insurance with statistics front-and-center, talking in bullet points. Oh and Koran displayed prominently.

Reassures the fucking bond market about the country's Triple-A credit rating. Yeah, think about that when you're drowning from the inside.

North Korean officials are telling people in the country to use “salt water” to disinfect their hands and surfaces in their homes and workplaces, Daily NK has learned.
Sources in the province also reported that when local workers asked for sterilization products to disinfect surfaces at their workplaces disease control officials told them to just use water mixed with salt.
“Disease control officials told us that consuming ‘sufficient’ quantities of salt will help defend against the spread of infectious disease, and that salt can be used to disinfect both the hands and mouths,” one source told Daily NK.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has not promoted the idea that salt water can help defend against infectious diseases.

Ticino is the first Swiss canton to declare a state of emergency, head honco of the Swiss health authorities implied that it's gonna be extended to the entire country soon. My bet is that like last week, they're waiting for Friday or Saturday to announce it, when the markets are closed, and when people are chilling on week end.

The way it has been managed so far borders on criminal incompetence, in the matter of 10 days, we managed to get more cases than Japan who was hit way earlier in the pandemic. I'm not even gonna talk about Taiwan that plateau'd at 49 cases and haven't had a new one in weeks.

What did they do differently? They did not wait to close their borders with china, or to quarantine anyone who had traveled in an infected country over the past 14 days. Maybe because they learned about the H1N1 and SARS epidemics. But one of the role of the WHO is to actually spread information on how to deal with such epidemics to countries who have not been as badly affected.

From the international organizations, to the regional organizations, up to the state level, failures and mismanagement have been there every step of the way.

The grosser failure in my eyes, is how, after witnessing the examples of China, then Iran, then Italy, most European states did not take any real measure to slow it further down once the writing was on the wall. The Swiss and French authorities don't even hide the fact that they decided to do so "to preserve the economy", failing to recognize that by delaying action, they're increasing the length of time the economy is gonna suffer, and they're increasing the chances for the health system to not be able to sustain a massive influx of sick people.

Something that no one talks about, and that the Corona death casualty numbers doesn't take into account, is how people with health issues unrelated to Covid-19 are gonna die (are already in the case of France and Italy) simply because hospitals capacity will already be used at the fullest.

You're having a heart attack or for whatever reason you need to get intubated? Tough luck. You got into an accident, got head trauma and need a CT scan to rule out an infection or a brain injury? Well, half of the hospital crew is home sick, the rest can't even handle the Covid sick people. Woops you died from a brain hemorrhage.

In a perfect world, once that settles down, we would have a Nuremberg trial. But we don't live in a perfect world.

That didn't take long.
Pointless to talk about epidemic areas, you can get coronavirus from anywhere in Finland

Since the coronavirus epidemic situation in Europe and North America has changed rapidly, countries and regions in the classification of the epidemic area will be abandoned, says THL (National Institute for Health and Welfare) in a statement on Thursday.

2 weeks ago my normalfag friends said "its just a flu bro". now they getting scared.

A lot of the normalfags on Facebag are still posting stuff like, "Don't worry, it's just he flu, bro!"

Yes, I'm in a relatively low-risk area, but that doesn't mean we won't be feeling the economic ramifications. Especially when my job handles a lot of Chinese glass.

Article on how the Quebec isn't as widely testing for the virus as they should.

Regarding the Europe travel ban, it feels like a trap for his detractors, who were demanding quicker action, so he banned their city-on-a-hill, the European Union, which will absolutely infuriate them into whining like little bitches.
Of course Quebec government would be pulling that type of shit. Another reason that Canadians have such issues with Quebec, in these type of situations the ignorance is insane. Ontario hasn't been fucking around with this too much, but still should probably implement more measures in shutting the boarders down. Hopefully Mr. Dressup doesn't go on his liberal hugbox campaign about how it's racist to impede travel from infected regions to here. Stay safe brother, thanks for sharing this.

And now their entire marketing campaign is fucking ruined. Won't somebody please think of the well paid ad agencies and the transnational corporations that are being adversely affected by this killer plague.

It's ultra vital to understand that while the stock markets don't effect a lot of people...that they actually do.

Step back and take a look at who is getting infected - the wealthy. Those who can afford trips, nice air travel, nice hotels, fancy sporting seats, those going to fancy meetings, sports stars, movie stars. This is a virus that isn't spreading through Ghettos, (although it will), it is being spread by the luxury of having money to fly around and get infected.

Well, while we may see a drop in 25% and say to ourselves "well, so millionaire bob lost $250K, he still has $750K and will still spend", it is not really true.

Millionaire Bob has 250K in the stock market, leveraged 2-5 times against his actual bet. So when I lose 25K, he will lose 125K. or more. Over 8 Trillion has been wiped out - and most of that was placed into stocks not with cash, but with loans leveraged against assets which now must be sold off as those margins are called in.

That means hundreds of thousands of credit cards are being cancelled. Perhaps millions. Credit lined wiped out. Gone.

So, they are selling because they have to get cash - and will not be able to re-invest or spend it, because their margins are being called they have to repay. The cascade effect of all that money leaving the global economy is outrageous.

Sure, there will be a dip when it would be wise to buy up some solid stocks, but forget about that at the moment, the power of the consumer worldwide was just dealt a severe blow.

We're in a vicious cycle with no asset class left to inflate to make up for it. And no cash or credit to inflate one should we find a candidate. The only asset left to inflate that could in theory rocket would be Gold, but with JP Morgan and friends holding 10 times (or perhaps a 100) on paper the amount of Gold they can get, should those notes be converted into cash OR gold be attempted, we will see Trillions lost - and they aren't covered by FDIC.

The next crisis will be Junk Bonds and possibly the horrifying scenario if people attempt to actually convert their promise notes of Gold into the real thing. JP Morgan will disappear along with Trillions.

Yeah this will be a new depression.
That is not the end of the world. Hungary has survived without a stock market and very limited international trade for 9 centuries.

But surviving is not the same as status quo. Quality of life will drop massively from this everywhere.

Fancy vacations, car with single digit age, big flat screen tv, iphone Snob editions, these will become rarer for some time.

Take good care of your items that require international big corporation trade. Every country can make shoes and cotton clothes, lightbulbs are not rocket science.
But car parts , computers, and such advanced systema are harder to locally make, especially cheaply.

Both of these moments were cute. No gaffes in sight just some goofy candid moments. The ink thing made me laugh because it reminded me of my father. He is slightly older than the president so he is technically Silent Generation, but he does goofy shit like this all the time. I think it is from watching too much Howdy Doody as a kid.

Either way it was an unexpected mood boost. Very much needed today. Do your best everyone.
