I actually have a theory at least a portion of this stuff started from anti-sjw trolls on tumblr way back in like 2013 and a bunch of impressionable 14 year olds took it at face value and it just snowballed from there. People in their 20s - 30s followed suit because minors online basically overthrew social media hierarchy a couple of years later.

"And I'm part of something for the first time in my life" screams of some poor, socially stunted guy transitioning to become socially accepted and instantly getting a sense of community and camraderie where he couldn't ass himself to go outside and do something outside of his comfort zone for once in his life.

Ah yes, the autist in women’s clothing. Moderate autists suck at socializing and are obsessed with categories. One such category is sexed roles - men must x and women must y and anything that breaks the rule = extreme confusion and discomfort. Since autists are typically unmasculine men, they decide they must be trans women and derive succor from mimicking females.
