A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

UK government staff working for Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) have been warned about repeated acts of vandalism at its Manchester HQ, including defecating on toilet floors and using faeces to “write unpleasant messages”.

A member of the facilities management team at HMRC – which governs the collection of tax and payment of state support – wrote to staff about repeated bad behaviour at the department’s Trinity Bridge House HQ in an email seen by FinTech Futures.

“Last week there was another deliberate act of vandalism in the ground floor toilets resulting in the flooding of the facilities and the corridor,” the note states, adding that there has been an increase in reported incidents.

Staff were reported to have “deliberately blocked toilet bowls with paper towels”, smeared “bodily fluids” on doors, walls and toilet seats, used faeces to “write unpleasant messages”, defecated on toilet floors, and taken illegal drugs.

More than one member of HMRC staff is involved in the vandalism, according to the email. It adds that anyone identified as carrying out deliberate acts of vandalism will be dealt with “severely”.

Esther Wallington, chief people officer at HMRC, told FinTech Futures: “These reprehensible actions, committed by a few individuals, have no place in our organisation and absolutely do not reflect the professionalism and values of the overwhelming majority of our Manchester colleagues.

“We are working with police to investigate these acts of vandalism and identify those responsible.”

The email bears striking resemblance to one issued by Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) chief operating officer Georgina Philippou to staff to the watchdogs’s new Stratford HQ.

Philippou called out employees for defecating on the toilet floors and verbally abusing catering and security staff.

HMRC completed the letting of a new 157,000sq foot Manchester location in March 2018.

The new building, less than a mile away from Trinity Bridge House, will be centred in the New Bailey development near Salford Central station. Members of staff will begin moving to the seven-storey complex from Spring 2022 onwards.

In 2015 HMRC announced its aim to bring employees together into 13 “large, modern offices”, making it “easier to collaborate and work flexibly”.

The department’s Locations Programme is the largest office transformation programme in the UK and involves the development of more than 429,000sq metres of new office space. It plans to save around £300 million up to 2025 through the programme.

There isn't an actual law the police were using. They based their unlawful actions on something called the "Hate Crime Operational Guidance," which isn't a law. It's just some shit made up by a college.

Civil rights statutes (such as 42 U.S.C. § 1983 which is what you would usually sue cops with) in the United States have what is called "fee shifting" provisions, which mean a prevailing litigant collects attorney's fees from the losing side if they win. Any cops pulling such a stunt in the United States would be nearly immediately sued, because if they won their suit, even if they collected nominal damages of a dollar, the cops could end up paying millions in attorney fees, depending on how exhaustively the case got litigated.

(One hopes this happens in that U. Conn case but one of the dumbasses pled to something.)

The dispute was over a handicap parking spot. His lawyer had this as a defense:

“I think we can all agree that there is nothing more annoying than someone parked in a disabled bay when they shouldn't be.”

Ultimately this guy only had to pay a fine and court costs of about £400, and yet he still had the nerve to declare outside the court after that “Justice was not done.”

Caroline Flack: TV presenter dies at 40

Caroline Flack, ex-Love Island host, has been found dead in her London flat, her family have confirmed.

A lawyer for the family said the star had taken her own life.

She stood down from the dating show after she was charged with assaulting her partner in December and was due to stand trial next month.

As well as presenting Love Island she had co-hosted The X Factor and won Strictly Come Dancing in 2014.

The family said in a statement: "We can confirm that our Caroline passed away today, the 15th of February.

"We would ask that the press respect the privacy of the family at this difficult time and we would ask they make no attempt to contact us and/or photograph us."

Met Police remove 374 names from gangs matrix


The Metropolitan Police has removed 374 people from its gangs matrix after the UK's data watchdog found it breached data protection laws.

The database was set up following the 2011 riots to identify those at risk of committing, or being a victim of, gang-related crime in the capital.

Shortcomings were identified by the Information Commissioner (ICO) and in a review by London's mayor in 2018.

Scotland Yard said its use of the gangs matrix "saved lives".

In November 2018, the ICO issued an enforcement notice requiring the Met to make a number of changes to the database to ensure it complied with data protection laws.

The watchdog's deputy commissioner James Dipple-Johnstone said it was "satisfied the terms of the enforcement notice [had] now been met".

Among the steps required was improving guidance to explain what constitutes a gang member, ensuring people's data on the gangs matrix was "clearly identified, to distinguish between victims of crime and actual or suspected offenders" and "erasing any informal lists of people who no longer meet the gangs matrix criteria".

'Significant scrutiny'
A Met spokesman said the matrix was "key in reducing risk among those included on it", adding: "This saves lives."

He added: "Over the last 15 months, there has been significant external scrutiny of the gangs matrix.

"We are now implementing a number of measures to make sure that we can comply with their requirements."

Latest figures show there are currently 2,552 individuals on the matrix, 1,063 of whom are in custody.

Since last autumn, 181 individuals have been added while 374 have been removed from it.

Mr Dipple-Johnstone added: "We will continue to work with the MPS, the Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime and London boroughs, so that data sharing can take place in a way that maintains that confidence."

The mayor's office has been approached for comment.

God, it reminds me so much of Heathers because of things like people erasing the flaws of someone who most likely did what she was accused of and people on Facebook getting on a soapbox about suicide and mental health even though they treat the people in their life like shit.
