'Empire' star Jussie Smollett attacked in possible hate crime

“Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was attacked in the early morning hours on Tuesday in what Chicago police are calling a possible hate crime.

Smollett was attacked by two people "yelling out racial and homophobic slurs" and "poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim," police said.

According to police, one of Smollett's alleged attackers also put a rope around his neck. Both fled the scene.

Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital and "is in good condition," police told CNN.

Later Tuesday, CNN's Don Lemon spoke to Smollett and a mutual friend who was at the hospital with the actor. Smollett confirmed the incident took place.

He was shaken and angry that an attack like this could happen. Smollett told CNN he fought back at the attackers.

"Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime," the police statement said.

Smollett has starred on Fox's "Empire" since 2015. He plays Jamal, a successful singer in the musical Lyon family. Like his character, Smollett identifies as gay.

"We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our 'Empire' family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night," a representative of 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement to CNN. "We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice. The entire studio, network and production stands united in the face of any despicable act of violence and hate -- and especially against one of our own."

A representative for GLAAD told CNN the organization has reached out Smollett to offer assistance and support.

"Jussie is a true champion for LGBTQ people and is beloved by the community and allies around the world," a GLAAD spokesperson said in a statement.

This is no longer "indicted in Chicago", he got off because of that once. The problem was, it was too obvious and thus the Special prosecuter. Now its "Indicted BY Illinois, with direct oversight from Washington D.C."

Sure, because there are no stooges with any connections there in DC. Never mind that this time last year Smollett was palling around with a woman that was, until recently, a Democratic candidate for president.

Unrelated, I have a bridge and a plot of land and some ca--er, "chicken" meat to sell you.

They're not going to allow a conviction of this fool to make so many who defended him to the hilt look like idiots. They dug their heels in too hard trying to stand by him. Now they're going to need to pay big to make sure he maintains a shred of his image.

There are tons of people connected to politicians who go to jail all the time.

To bury this it would have been really easy just not to appoint a special prosecutor, suck up a couple days of bad press and move on. Like most cases I could easily see a plea bargain that satisfied nobody but there would be little point, political or otherwise, to bother indicting just to throw it. All they had to do was just not prosecute at all.

Look, my point is that a party is only going to be willing to accept so many black eyes, especially during an election year. A lot of people came out two seconds after his story started garnering scrutiny and said everyone questioning him was a terrible racist, and then did the same thing when a grand jury wanted to talk to him. All of those people are going to have their credibility questioned if he goes down, and if nothing else they'll need to be replaced by some other, more well-greased cogs. No one wants to go down because of this stain.

All I'm saying is that someone is doing careful math right now.

Hoo boy, they haven't even determined yet if they're going to anything about the Cook County State Attorney drama. I really hope that they do, but they have enough plausible deniability that the special prosecution is probably just going to focus on Jussay. Which would suck, because Foxx needs to be raked over the coals for this.

EDIT: Oh, never mind. Webb donated 1,000 bucks to Foxx's campaign. Nothing's going to happen to her.

Sounds like it might be the CPD who is most pissed about this. They did everything right (for a change) and got fucked by a corrupt prosecutor, or a prosecutor so fucking dumb that only corruption could have put her there.

If the conductor of the lolita express is expendable in his circles a C-lister is probably less expendable and more of an afterthought that "his group" thought would be adorable to add.

There were ways to make this vanish in a way that would have been less toxic for almost anyone, which a more intelligent and corrupt prosecutor might have used to everyone's near satisfaction. Unfortunately for them Kim Foxx and Juicy are both brained damaged motor-mouths who decided that trying to throw the city and CPD under the bus while bragging about it would be smarter. From the filings posted above it seems like they want to double down on a strategy of attacking, which is probably not a good idea.

Ultimately Foxx might be spared disbarment or censure because she's more entrenched in the Chicago machine but her political future is uncertain. This isn't the only issue she has dragging her down, after all. As for Juicy....well, I'm hoping Justice gets done.

Well, it was obvious he called in a favor... and then instead of just going away, the dumbass did social media victory laps by being a smug asshole far above his actual asshole weight-class.

He won a rigged fight, and pressed the gaming commission into dropping the matter, and then said "This is all over and behind us unless you want to dredge up the painful past"

That may have been good enough for the papers and the White Knights, but there's still a couple thousand people who lost money on that fight who are PISSED and waiting outside the Garden in the alley for him to come out, and he has to go home at SOME point.....

That was his mistake. You can get away with that shit when you're a Tumblr or Twitter nobody and your account gets reinstated after sending death threats to eggs. You didn't cost anyone any money. Smollett did, and he thumbed his nose at the people wanting him to account for himself while his feet were still hot from the fire. People don't like to see someone evade taking responsibility and then laughing about it publicly five seconds later. That's basically written into our DNA at this point. Injustice pisses us off.

Jussie acted like the snotnosed little shit who hid behind the schoolmarm's skirts acting like he was untouchable and people want to see his nose broken for it.
 
The cops have always been a major part of the 'Chicago Machine', you don't get to shit on the machine without paying. Before or after you are paying the machine.
This fag is just so stupid (or cheap) that he didn't hire the cops to stage the 'attack' in the first place.
 
The interesting thing to me about the info dump is the Special Prosecutor asked the Chicago Prosecutor to provide documentary evidence to back up their claim that this dismissal was routine and something they do often for crimes such as this. No such evidence was provided. I wonder if we are gonna see that prosecutor hauled in too over this.
