The only thing I disagree with is he lowtax didn't want her to get pregnant. Abusive men often tamper with birth control because getting her pregnant accomplishes a few things that most abusers want. They are bound together legally, on some level, for 18 years, so she cannot completely leave him. It also makes it much harder for her to cheat (if they are together). And since most men avoid single mothers, it makes it hard for her to get a boyfriend that would upstage lowtax (if they are apart). It can interrupt any plans she has to get an education or career. It keeps her busy and gives the man a handy cudgel to keep her in line. Depending on the guy they might also like the ability to shame her about the way she looks post partum or insult her parenting to lower the self esteem. It is a no-brainer to these guys since they won't be doing any of the work involved with kids anyway.

Lowtax certainly freaked the fuck out and went nuclear the moment she left. Ashli is withholding his kid from him but she is also in a shelter because of him (but only for emotional abuse, which the judge isn't going to weigh the same as physical abuse when it comes to a father's rights to spend time with his kid). The judge could very well split the difference and enforce visitation rather than grant him full custody.

Usually in family court, everything is on the table any time there's a hearing about anything. You can go in thinking you're just late on payments and come out with a restraining order. They play by different rules in family court. It's pretty fucked.
