The problem with leaderless communities online is that someone else tries to rise up and become a self proclaimed leader. Chances are these self proclaimed leaders are going to be dweebs, opportunists, grifters, entryists, or attention whores. Uncle Kage is controversial with his PR tactics, but he knows his place as a "leader of the fandom" and exploits it to make the fandom look better than it actually is. Others use their status to further push politics, or make a bunch of money from furries wasting mom's credit card.I'd've the furries didn't go front and centre on the media in the 90s. There is no way the community would be hated on as badly as now. The thing is that a community without a leader will inevitably fall. The furries (like you have said) are too decentralised. This leads to standards and balances being much harder to enforce. Now it falls onto personal standards, which we have all seen how that has gone in the community itself. Essentially, the furries are likely to die out within 20 or so years due to no central leader or core ideology in place, or any sense of order for that matter.
As for the fandom dying out, I give it 10 years before the furry fandom contracts hard. Someone I knew online was telling me at the height of the brony craze that "it's going to die out just as quick as it blew up" and sure enough he was right. There used to be tons of pony cons, now the MLP fandom is contracting and the new MLP series is pissing off bronies. The same could be said about the furry fandom, there are quite a few furries pissed at the political direction the fandom took but are unwilling to be thrown under the bus for calling out these furries. Instead they choose to lay low, either hoping these furries get bored or inevitably ditching the furry fandom completely and finding a real hobby. Then to add to that most nerd groups have a very low opinion of furries and you can't blame them for this either. When the furry scene becomes uncool, many of the big fandom celebs are going to pivot to the next big thing just like Charla Trotman did and pray they can make it.
There's also not much of a creative scene coming out of the furry fandom that isn't NSFW, but most furries are in it for the porn anyway. Most of the clean furry material that furries eat up comes from big media corporations or other creative scenes and not the fandom. I've seen furries get burnt out with the fandom over this as well, and if you want to produce media involving talking animals that gets noticed your best bet is to distance yourself from the fandom.
