I've been playing Sword for about 2 weeks. I've enjoyed it, and have probably had more fun playing online than I have with any Pokemon game since Y. It's definitely not perfect, though, and was far too easy (I OHKO'd basically everything). The story was also meh, but that's less important for Pokemon than other franchises. I really like a lot of the new Pokemon; the only old one I used in my in-game team was Toxicroak.

I just finished Sword. The game was ok. Definitely the weakest generation but not the total trash fire I was expecting.

Also I am thoroughly convinced /vp/ never played an rpg outside of Pokemon. I saw someone brag about the older games having complex and deep gameplay/exploration and just shook my head. Pre gen V may have been less linear but the exploration and worlds back in the day still had the depth of a mud puddle. Pokémon is the Harry Potter of video games. 90’s kid Millenials who cling on to nostalgia yet refuse to move on to better games.

The fandom in general has gotten even worse with the gatekeeping than ever. Fans who started with RSE and beyond are looked down upon as being mindless consumers instead of starting with what they consider the “passion project” first two gens. Which is hilarious because most of these old school fans only got into the games because of the Pokemania fad of the 90’s. It is amusing seeing gen 2 and Johto in general being grandfathered in with the first gen in terms of the old school genwunner mentality.

The problem is instead of improving in this regard it just keeps getting worse, as a series goes on it should look to others in it's genre and improve from them not exist in its own little bubble to be judged in isolation like most fanboys wish the games could be. In fact the fact that pokemon as a game now has even more of a gap between it and most other games in the genre then it did before is comical in how its worsened since the DS games.

I thought genwunners died after LGPE

No you're right, I am just laughing at fans who are too far up their asses to see that the series has always lagged behind compared to other jrpgs. Besides if Pokemon had any real jrpg competition on the GB/GBC back during the first two gens it would still look like a joke.

LGPE made genwunners worse since it just brought the “muh childhood is ruined” crawling out of the woodworks even more.

I would extend that to the GBA since, keep in mind that most of the GBA's life cycle it was a port/remake machine, hell other then pokemon what other jrpgs did nintendo make themselves for the system (M&L and Mother 3?)
The DS games overall still lagged behind other things like DQ9 and Radiant Historia but I would still say it was the least distance pokemon ever had from other games in the genre where new jrpgs weren't a rarity (which considering how many of the DS' jrpgs were ports it's kinda abit like the gba situation but it wasn't a slouch when it came to new shit as well).

I have seen the exact opposite, most people shat on charazard wank in the new game, KANTOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO being a meme I think kinda shows people are sick and tired of gen 1 getting preferential treatment, I don't doubt that genwunners still exist, but it seems like to me that ever since x and y they have been decreasing in number rapidly.

GBC did have Dragon Warrior Monsters which did make Pokemon look like a joke for all it matters. I only assume it went under the radar because Dragon Warrior/Quest were obscure in the west before they married Akira Toriyama and the monster designs were more aimed at existing DW fans and not kids wanting to make dogs fight giant beetles or palm trees.

Pokemon's only the massive juggernaut that it is because of the addictive pick and choose gameplay (most RPGs give you a predetermined set of characters every time), and, of course, the extremely aggressive merchandising and marketing. It can't be understated how things like the anime and TCG utterly carried the franchise to this day, because the glitchy buggy messes GF called games sure as hell weren't going to do it on their own. And even as time went on the mainline titles were always one step behind in terms of tech and basic prowess, and it's only now with the jump to HD that such a fact has become painfully clear.

being pandered too only works so long until it becomes annoying, no matter how obsessed someone is. at least I would hope so. lets go wasnt even as good a remake as fire red. you want gen one play that. there's good romhacks to eliminate the need for trading if you're emulating too. no reason to go back to ugly old red and blue or undercooked lets go when that exists. damn that shit was good. everybody at nintendo brought their A game to the gba for some reason. and that sweet chunky pixel art.

Gen 3 games are particularly kind jarring to me from a technical standpoint, Ruby & Sapphire don't look that much better compared to Pokemon Crystal, i'd say they look below-average for the system, got rid of the sprite animations (Emerald had them back, but they looks worse than in Crystal's), and the fact they came out like two years after Golden Sun didn't do them any favors

damn camelot knows how to make a battle animation. their old shining force only had 2-4 frame battle animations like pokemon but you actually remembered that shit.

and on a console a decade older at that. that said I still dig the gen 3 visual aesthetic. simple as it is.

Pretty sure most pokemon fans do. Why do you think so many fan games stick to it (other than it being easier to make sprites for).

Because Pokemon essentials is based on that generation and it comes with all the sprites made for it.

... No, really, that's the reason.

The bigger griefing than pokemon Sword and Shield is the missing fourth game of Golden Sun.

Looking back at my posts and fandom observations I am starting to think fans severely over exaggerate the presence of genwunners. It has even become fashionable to bash Unova and Sinnoh lately because people are suddenly showing more appreciation for them. I notice GF shills who blindly praise SwSh love to target the fans of those three generations specifically and bash the games to be contrarians. It is now considered an unpopular opinion on Reddit to dislike Kanto, Sinnoh, and Unova. It has even gotten to the point where simply liking Kanto will have people brand you a genwunner.

Also considering how badly Camelot fucked up Dark Dawn I guess it is a good thing they didn’t make another Golden Sun. It probably would have ended on another cliffhanger like DD and leave every question unanswered.

I bought the Dual Pack (because my store had it in stock since someone cancelled a preorder) and I picked it up. Played through both of them in full.

The games are fine, but they do wrap up much quicker then any other Pokemon game for better or worse. The trimming the fat of tutorials/story makes it a far better experience then USUM's opening, and I feel the story (which is very shallow) got it's point across. The gameplay is what you come for and in the end I had a lot of fun, but the differences in the gym versions is nothing more then two gym leaders to exclusive to each version and a palette swap of the same gym for each. So if pokemon are your sole reason then just know you're not missing too much.

I play pokemon mainly for the journey to the E4 and the endgame, trying out new teams and using pokes I would never do otherwise. So I got my fill, and when Home comes out i'll send them to the cloud and replay it again eventually.

#unpopularopinion:
I beat shield a day ago and quite like it. Game is pretty short and streamlined but I really love how they made pokemon battling more sportslike with you having to get a sponsor etc. Quality of life stuff is amazing too if you're mainly into breeding + battling.

Will you be able to attach items with the pokemon home app? I might pick up sword so I can farm fossils and tart apples easier without having to beg people.

I don't hate it, I consider this gen to be middle tier, and generally better then the last two gens outside of AS/OR.

D tier are all games I did not play, but nothing I have heard about them leads me to believe I wouldn't put them in D anyway. Also I didn't necessarily play every one of these, but I did play at least one of the matched set (e.g. I played Soul Silver but not Heart Gold)

You should really try Platinum, it's a lot better than the gen 4 games that came before it.
