I'd say it's more a case of confused autists trooning out to deal with confused feelings about how their behavior meets gender/sexuality standards. Some are repressed homosexuals, some are incels looking to take the "easy way" out, some do it because they feel insecure about their masculinity. Of course there are also plenty who do it because of social contagion and/or for attention.

Incidentally, if you're looking for the FtM's, they're all hanging out on r/detrans, crying about how they fucked up their lives because of how much they hated being female, and how testosterone and mastectomy didn't magically make their social anxiety and depression go away. I do legitimately feel bad for those kids. A lot of them have messed-up self-images that got misdiagnosed due to social pressure, and they were subsequently sold snake oil.

This one in particular jumped out at me:

However, I couldn't help but notice that all of the famous bands were men. Men would think the band was cool, and women would be attracted to the band members. I thought there was no way I could be famous or respected the way I wanted being a female.

I would read about sexism in the music industry. Then I'd read about sexism in general. I have a very emotionally stunted family and thought that men receive the love and care, while women give the love and care and get nothing back for it.

I was so angry that I was female, as it meant I'd never be loved or respected by anyone. I cried that I wasn't born a boy and wished I could have been. I started reading about transgender online, but thought to myself I could never actually be one of those people. I was too self conscious and cared what people thought of me due to a lifetime of bullying and being ignored by family members.

I instantly went into severe depression. It was agony thinking it was impossible for me to be loved or respected due to an unchangeable birth "defect". I thought how male is default and I was so unlucky.

I can't help but think that this poor girl could have been helped by real feminism, and not by the victim feminism peddled by the Internet over the last seven years. If anything, it's the end-stage result of victim feminism: being a woman sucks so much, some girls just try to escape.
 
I've said that neo-trans are just running screaming from misunderstood gender roles. Perhaps I was a little too flippant with that if some of the people running screaming are from dysfunctional families instead of chasing a trend.

It's incredibly unfortunate this narrative of tearing yourself apart to escape your lot in life has become the default reaction, rather than gathering support to better it in the first place.

It really is pretty cult-like in the way that transition is offered up as the solution to any unhappiness. It reminds me of those free "stress tests" that Scientology gives out, where no matter what you answer the test comes back saying you need Scientology to cure what ails you.

You have body issues? You're trans! You jacked off pretending to be a girl? Sounds like a repressed trans girl to me! You had a strained relationship with your family? That makes sense, it's because you weren't living as your authentic self!

Then when you transition and you're still unhappy you're told "you're unhappy because of transphobia! If people weren't so transphobic you'd be living your best life!" and that's why no amount of support or ass kissing from "allies" is ever good enough, they're still unhappy even though they did the thing that was supposed to make them happy, so you must be doing something wrong.

You even get the sunk cost fallacy like in a cult. People throw a lot of money and time and sacrifice friends and family for their transitions, even if they do realize maybe it wasn't the best choice they feel like they can't go back because they've given up so much already, might as well keep going.

Sending it to a minor, though, is still illegal, isn't it? Or is it only illegal when the photo is of a minor? If it's not illegal, it should be.

Sending porn to minors is definitely illegal across state lines. No clue about if you're in the same state.

Have you seen the lists of warning signs of a cult? Online trans groups hit pretty much all of them. The only thing they don't have going for them is the lack of a single charismatic leader.
