The problem is there is no way to do it without making it too difficult for anyone to get any pets. We don't need regulation, we need education.

And boaman here is educable? Really?

The only education that dipshit will ever receive is being strangled by a Burmese python, or something more swift if he gets into venomous reptiles.

I laughed my ass off when he screamed when the snake struck him, but I can't watch any more of his videos because I feel terrible for those animals.

To be fair, burms do tend to be pretty sweet it they're both used to be handled and not being manhandled. That said, the notion they make great pets for everyone is like saying macaws make great pets for everyone. You have to be able to house, feed, clean up after, haul around, and otherwise properly care for a potentially 16+ foot snake. Who can kill you (granted horses and dogs can also kill you, and tbh I think the bigger risk is an unhealthy or dead snake rather than a dead kid). Not to mention pay for vet visits which can cost thousands. Most people can't keep an animal like that, so temperament aside they do not make good pets for all but a few people.

The tegu and savannah monitor break my heart. He's right that they're intelligent animals, yet he neglects giving them anything but a hide and dishes. Certainly some balls and more things to hide in couldn't hurt, as well as taking them out to do more than just manhandle them (let them run around supervised, stuff like that). The monitor also needs much deeper substrate than that as being able to borrow is crucial to their health.

All that handling when the animals are clearly stressed is bullshit to. His dumb ass wouldn't get bitten if he wasn't fucking with them when they clearly wanted to be left alone.

Also, is it just me or do a lot of those animals look underweight? I'm no expert, but a lot of their spines seem to look too visible, and the loose skin on the burm and corn especially look off as fuck.

And all that kissing and slobbering on their heads. Thats almost certainly stressing them, and other than him getting diseases he could give diseases to them. Even with the best care, diseases can kill reptiles fast and are often undetectable until its too late (a somewhat internet famous 16 foot long Burmese python went from fine to dead in 72 hours due to resperatory disease, and this is with an owner who cared for her properly and the vet trying as hard as they could to save her)

Tl;dr, I think the animals are at far greater risk of him killing them than he is of being killed by them

On an unrelated note, I'm mainly an invert sperg as well.

EDIT: apparently the place he bought the black and white tegu is one of those skeezy pet stores that sell puppies (from puppy mills of course), keeps expired food on the shelves, and grossly neglects the small mammals.

We legit need to find out where this guy lives and send his dox to the SPCA before he ends up murdering one of these animals.

Would you trust boaman with a goldfish? Or a dog? The dog is far more likely to kill him.

Goldfish can actually be a lot of work to properly take care of. They can live for a pretty long time, considering they're in the Koi family. At least, this is what I have read from fish people.

I honestly don't know of any pet I would trust around this kid. I've had a lot of pets growing up and I feel like my cat has been the easiest for me to maintain, weirdly enough. I wouldn't trust this kid even with a very patient cat though, if he lost a snake outside for three months.

Where do his parents get all the money for all of these animals? I mean, even for my small leopard gecko, I know all of her supplies together could get pricey, just maintaining her heat lamp alone (those bulbs can get expensive if you're on a budget). Her cage also had a lot more stuff in it: multiple hides, fake foliage, a lot of space for one lizard not even a foot long from snout to tail. A lot of these animals who are much larger than she was are in tanks that are way smaller than hers. I also didn't handle her as much, and she lived for a long while; she pretty much outlived all the pets we'd had with the exception of my dog. As cool and as fairly low-maintenance as she was, I'm not sure I want to have another reptile anytime soon.

I miss her though. She used to climb up my arm and behind my neck and just sit there under my hair. It was warm and she liked it. Her name was Greta. She was a very chill little lizard.

... I kind of got off track there.

The way he fumbles about with the poor things and won't let them relax is definitely the most horrifying thing to me. Especially since his parents are right there and not saying anything. It's like the whole family thinks that since they're reptiles they can just treat them like animated slinkies.

I've never even owned a snake or lizard and know very little about them, but it's obvious how stressed those poor things are and that they're greatly lacking in stimulation within their habitats.

Unfortunately there's a lot of people out there who treat such animals as lesser pets, like they're just furniture or toys you can take out when you feel like and ignore the rest of the time. They're not as vocal or obviously expressive as dogs or cats so people just conveniently ignore the signs of unhappiness. So many feels.

NGL, whenever he or his family members were gripping the animals too tight I winced. :(

As for other reptile lolcows, I remember this one Australian guy who not only pushed venomoid snakes (venomous snakes with their venom glands removed, which aside from being mutilation also decresses their lifespan significantly IIRC), but would remove venom glands with his bare hands and without anesthesia. Granted I'd say thats well beyond lolcow status and more like the herp version of Nick Bate.

I hate to get preachy, but getting people charged with animal cruelty when it comes to reptiles is hugely difficult if not impossible in some places, since some places exempt reptiles (or at least venomous ones) from cruelty laws. And even it can be legally classified as animal cruelty, most of the time the powers that be don't give a fuck. For example, the stuff that goes on in Oklahoma Rattlesnake roundups would be classified as felony animal cruelty under Oklahoma law. There are many, MANY undercover videos and pictures that blantently show this (snakes with no food or water, snakes with their mouths sewn shut, people hitting and stepping on them, etc). People are constantly contacting lawmakers about it and showing them the evidence, but for the most part its just ignored.

Tl;dr people do massively fucked up things to reptiles and are generally free to openly showcase these things without any significant chance of legal action.

My lord, I love reptiles myself and have kept Iguanas and Snakes in the past. I've considered getting an Argentinian Black and White Tegu somewhere down the line and haven't done so yet because I know I don't have the resources to keep it living completely happy and healthy in 100% ideal circumstances... this guy is just... wtf... I'm at a complete loss.

Yeah this is definitely one of those lolcows who are more upsetting or horrific than funny. :(

I didn't know the things @Android raptor mentioned about round ups, I leave this thread with even more feels.

I'm in the same situation except with a burm instead of a tegu. The ones I've interacted with had such wonderful personalities (I especially love their curiosity) and the huge size is pretty neat, however I don't have anywhere near the resources for one right now. It'd be like having a kid right now, which is a horrifying thought.

I worry what will happen when this kids burm starts getting massive (assuming it lives that long).
